Model Cars Magazine Forum

After having Tom's video at "The Scalemodeling Channel" pop up in my YouTube feed three weeks ago, I got the bug to start building model cars.  With the help of his channel and several others and all the research I have done here and other forums and websites and magazines I was able to complete my first model.  I made a lot of mistakes but it was a lot of fun and I am ready to get started on my next one.  I've got to say that I am pretty impressed with it even with all the mistakes.  It is the Revell Fireball Roberts 57 Ford.  I'm not quiet sure how posting photos here works so I hope the pictures show up LOL:lol:  If they do I love the way this forum allows you to upload photos without having to link to them.

Thanks guys.. truth be told I built three real fast in a two week period thirty years ago when I was 18 but I didn't know what I was doing so I am calling this my first "real" one.

Very nice work on your "first" model (no sarcasm intended, I did the same thing 60 years ago).

On your next ones, are you planning some engine shots, followed by interiors?

Take it one step at a time...no rush

Thanks again all.. I appreciate it and had a lot of fun.

BigTallDad, my next two models are both what I believe to be called curbside models so no engines but I will try to get some interior shots.  Actually, I just forgot to take them so here is a couple.  I had the engine looking OK but used too much superglue on the painted parts and messed them up a bit (you can see that it looks crystallized on those parts) and also had trouble closing the hood with the hose from the supercharger to the carb so I pulled it off the supercharger.  The interior looked great until I took the tape off before the paint had dried completely (lesson learned) and I peeled it off in a gooey mess.  I had airbrushed the dash and then taped it off to do some detail with the paint brush and painted it on too thick.  Hopefully I hid that in the picture.IMG_0152.thumb.JPG.3fd537c1ac4d7a272e24f1503643c37e.JPGIMG_0153.thumb.JPG.6fc14b7589b379dcd4735285a80ae247.JPG

Love the finish on its paint ---  looks more realistic than a glossy finish ; great work !

I'm still S-L-O-W-L-Y building the c.1990 issue of the Revell 1967 SS-396 Chevelle ; it'll be my first build in almost 13 years ( I gave up for a while when my mum fell-ill ... just getting back into things again ).

Keep it up , man !

Nicely done! The '57 looks great, especially considering it's your first "real" model. I think entering the hobby as an adult comes with two major advantages: cash and patience! When I was a kid, most of the model cars I built were butchered to some degree out of enthusiasm, impatience, or lack of proper tools, materials, and knowledge.

I applaud your measured approach, taking your time to do some research and experiment with new techniques.

Thanks everyone!

1972coronet... I thought so too and took a gamble.  That is flat Folkart Bright Red and Craftsmart flat white with, first, a few coats of DecoArt Americana Gloss varnish for the decals... then DecoArt Americana Semi-Gloss after the decals were applied.  I'm going to make my next one shiny (I hope) so I am not sure how well the craft paints will do.  I am hoping to make it shiny without the stink of Enamels or Lacquers but we will see.  I am honestly not sure what to do as I have no experience but I do know I am using my new airbrush.  I love that thing.  I will be painting everything possible with it next time and try to plan out better and pre-fit things.

Great result on the Fireball car. You are off to a great start. Thoughts on how to proceed with future builds and a positive attitude are both great assets for your future modelling endeavors.

Definitely agree with all the positive comments.  For a first model in many years that one came out really well.  As far as the craft paints they do work quite well and can be cleared with  several different glosses to get the shine you want.  I will usually use the brand offered by the same company the paint is from, but I have used DuPont acrylic clear and it also works quite well.  Experiment a bit on scrap pieces or the infamous plastic spoon test.

For a first model, that looks amazing.

Agreed!  I have this exact same build on the bench right now waiting for decals, hope it looks half that nice B)
