gtx6970 Posted August 10, 2019 Posted August 10, 2019 I picked one of these up a few years ago and I'm thinking its coming to the front of the line quickly. My questions is how to replicate the cane work design on the sides of the body. ( there no decals in my kit ) Did the kit originally have decals? if so anyone have them to spare if not Im looking for suggestions on just how to proceed. Ive seen the 1/1 in person and REALLY want this car in my case

gtx6970 Posted August 10, 2019 Author Posted August 10, 2019 Try another picture just for good measure The cane work finish wraps all the way around the back of the car and duplicates on the other side
Ace-Garageguy Posted August 10, 2019 Posted August 10, 2019 I've seen some guys create an effect remarkably like that by spraying through window or filter screen.

Bucky Posted August 10, 2019 Posted August 10, 2019 The screen method should work for that. Or, ya might find a fabric at the sewing shop that would work.
jokar124 Posted August 10, 2019 Posted August 10, 2019 (edited) The "spraying through a screen" method might be acceptable but it would not be able to represent the canework at a 45 degree angle to the squared pattern. Your best bet might be to find an original kit decal sheet or have someone scan and print a canework pattern onto clear decal sheet. And no, Nora Desmond's car was an Isotta- Fraschini. Mark Posted August 10, 2019 Posted August 10, 2019 I had that kit, as I remember it did have decals, but not great ones. Depending on your skill level with printing your own decals, you could probably do better.
gman Posted August 10, 2019 Posted August 10, 2019 https://www.sketchuptextureclub.com/textures/nature-elements/rattan-wicker ^^ anything here have the right look for DIY laser print decals?
jokar124 Posted August 10, 2019 Posted August 10, 2019 I believe Vienna straw texture #12601 is correct
SfanGoch Posted August 11, 2019 Posted August 11, 2019 The canework is similar to what was applied to the 1931 Cadillac Town Brougham This is what the cane strips look like.
gtx6970 Posted August 11, 2019 Author Posted August 11, 2019 Thanks all. I pulled my kit out. And it does in fact have decals, but like Mark mentioned I doubt there usuable. We were at Hobby Lobby this afternoon and I took a stroll thru the fabric area and I may have found something that might work. But I think for that method to have a chance will require an airbrush ,,which I no longer have. Making decals in house I think are likely beyond my computer skills . We are finally getting settled in the new digs and we were out today getting ideas on workbench ideas for the garage . and I can get back to some much needed model time. So I want to try my hand at the lace mask and paint method. Soon, very very soon.
StevenGuthmiller Posted August 11, 2019 Posted August 11, 2019 Is the cane detail molded into the plastic? I assume not if everyone is talking decals. Steve

peteski Posted August 12, 2019 Posted August 12, 2019 If that is the Heller kit, I have it too, and I'm planning on making custom canework decals. But knowing me and how many projects I have in the "oven", it might take me 10 years to get to that one. So, don't count on me.

bobthehobbyguy Posted August 12, 2019 Posted August 12, 2019 Yeah have to agree. Decals would be the way to go. The cane is woven over and under and there is really no way to replicate that with paint.
stitchdup Posted August 12, 2019 Posted August 12, 2019 Could the cane work from the 31 caddilac town car be trimmed to fit? Though that would mean needing 2 town cars and pretty much replacing the entire lower body
cobraman Posted August 12, 2019 Posted August 12, 2019 If you cleared the decals first do you think they could be saved ?

ScottH454 Posted August 14, 2019 Posted August 14, 2019 My thoughts would be painting a beige base paint that is allowed to dry. Then with a wetter coat of dark brown on top brush the paint with a fine-tooth comb.
