cobraman Posted May 17, 2020 Posted May 17, 2020 First a bit of history . 1963 Shelby Bordinat Cobra concept roadster / CS 3001 . Two concept cars were built . The Cougar ll , a coupe and this roadster called the Bordinat Cobra . This car was also referred to as the XP Cobra . It had a 289 engine with a C4 auto . Body was vacuum formed of a new plastic called Royalex . Three bodies like this were made . One for the concept car and the other two just disappeared . Some reports say this car never ran . Both cars were discovered in a warehouse in Detroit and restored . The model . Started with the Lindberg kit of the Cougar ll. Since I was going to remove a large section of the body I glued the doors shut . After the roof was removed I filled in the resulting hole with sheet plastic . From there it was puttied and sanded and primed . I painted it with Tamiya silver and was not really happy but I never seem to get a good finish with silver . It was also cleared . I had to use the stock tires and wheels which was another disappointment . I had some very nice wires and ww tires but it turned out they were just too tall to fit . I had some goofs and this project did not turn out as good as I had wanted and hoped but they seldom do . Overall for me this ain’t too bad .
DonW Posted May 18, 2020 Posted May 18, 2020 Well executed. Beautiful car, it reminds me of Ton Tjaarda's Chevy Corvette based Rondine:
Gramps46 Posted May 18, 2020 Posted May 18, 2020 Congratulations Ray you got it done and it will be very unique on the shelf.
keyser Posted May 18, 2020 Posted May 18, 2020 Great build of gorgeous car. Turned out better than the project I've never started would ever dream to be Great build thread too.
Rich Chernosky Posted May 18, 2020 Posted May 18, 2020 Outstanding build Ray and thanks for taking us through it step by step. I liked the history too.
AmericanMuscleFan Posted May 18, 2020 Posted May 18, 2020 You did a great job on the body Ray, it's unique and you won't see a lot of this concept car at the next model car contest. Well done sir!
Phildaupho Posted May 18, 2020 Posted May 18, 2020 Great project resulting in a very unique and attractive model.
cobraman Posted May 18, 2020 Author Posted May 18, 2020 I just noticed I forgot to install the wheel spinners.
Plowboy Posted May 20, 2020 Posted May 20, 2020 Very cool little model Ray! It looks so much better without the roof!
cobraman Posted May 20, 2020 Author Posted May 20, 2020 Thanks guys. I think I should have repainted it but I didn't know what would happen if I tried to strip it with the putty on the body.
Koellefornia Kid Posted May 20, 2020 Posted May 20, 2020 I´ve never heard of this car until I came across your thread. Nice work, I think it looks much better than the Cougar II !

Every time I have stripped the paint on one of my model, (using Easy-Off oven cleaner) the putty stipped off too and I had to start over. Maybe someone knows a miracle product that can only remove the paint?
bobthehobbyguy Posted May 20, 2020 Posted May 20, 2020 Cool. Unusual subject. Looks fine to me. I'm fairly sure you would have had to redo the body work if you stripped it.
cobraman Posted May 20, 2020 Author Posted May 20, 2020 Thank you much guys. I actually wanted to do this for a long time because I really like this car and no kit is out there. I only found a 1/43 diecast for about 100 bucks.
