OldTrucker Posted July 8, 2020 Posted July 8, 2020 Got my AMT Double Header Kit today that I ordered through Amazon (shipped by Amazon too) and was shocked that all they did was stick labels on the shrink wrap and ship it!!! Box was all beat to h e double hockey sticks but luckily nothing inside was damaged!! Just find it inconceivable that they would do that!!!
shoopdog Posted July 8, 2020 Posted July 8, 2020 I thought it was bad when I received my last kit from Amazon in a mailing envelope.
stitchdup Posted July 8, 2020 Posted July 8, 2020 There's one shop in the uk that just used brown paper, I stopped ordering from them after 3 kits arrives squashed and they tried to say it was sent in a box. Now i take photos of the packaging as i open them
440 Dakota Posted July 8, 2020 Posted July 8, 2020 I've received a few questionably packaged items from them so won't order anything fragile, I figure its better to spend a couple more bucks from a smaller hobby dealer than have to deal with a return or repair of a damaged kit

The very act of wrapping it like that damaged the box. Fortunately the kit was fine. And then you get other stuff triple boxed and prepped to survive a nuclear blast.
1972coronet Posted July 8, 2020 Posted July 8, 2020 I believe that ol' Balut Egg Head is trying to save every dime that he can . I mean , the guy's barely making ends meet as it is --- business is slow , and packaging is expensive ; one might say that it comes at a Prime-ium .
Dave Van Posted July 8, 2020 Posted July 8, 2020 1 hour ago, Tom Geiger said: And then you get other stuff triple boxed and prepped to survive a nuclear blast. I got one of those today......... What looks like a brand new heavy duty plain brown box I could stand on.....nylon reinforced commercial paper tape. Two rounds of high grade bubble wrap sealed on all sides with tape....ends folded. Kit inside TWO plastic bags, each sealed, one inside the other. A nice thank you note from seller. Nice! BTW this was a $18 kit....not a super rare one!!!
High octane Posted July 8, 2020 Posted July 8, 2020 Poor packaging is a shame as we get a number of items delivered here from Amazon and they're always shipped in a box and never damaged.
iamsuperdan Posted July 8, 2020 Posted July 8, 2020 Unfortunately, the only time I've had a shipping issue was with a member here. The kit arrived wrapped in paper towel, put in a plastic bag, then completely wrapped in shipping tape. Somehow there was no damage. I've had no issues with vendors, especially ones from Japan.
Brutalform Posted July 8, 2020 Posted July 8, 2020 I’ve had to contact Amazon for more damaged items more than anyone else I’ve bought from. Sometimes they let you just keep the item and will either refund you or send a new one. I guess that all depends on if it’s amazon or an individual seller.
unclescott58 Posted July 8, 2020 Posted July 8, 2020 Ah yes! I've gotten a few things over the years poorly packaged. The most recent one that stood out, was a very fragile pre-built N scale water tower sent in a large non-padded envelope. I still can't figure out what the seller was thinking on that one. The pre-built water towing came in pieces, that could not be easily fixed to get a good looking model again. And then the seller was a pain in the you know what, to get a refund from besides! Then there are others out there who over do it. Sealing the package in a way that makes me afraid that I may end up damaging the item just in taking it out. Too much tape and plastic peanuts can be a pain. But, I rather have that, than an item sent in a package that offers little to no protection at all.
vincen47 Posted July 9, 2020 Posted July 9, 2020 I too, have received kits with nothing more than brown paper around the box. Granted, it was the lowest price + free shipping from overseas on eBay. You get what you pay for, I guess. Shockingly, in both cases, there was no damage, and it arrived still looking like a box. Generally, most items I order are packaged well, regardless of where they come from or how much I pay for shipping. I’m lucky.
Ace-Garageguy Posted July 9, 2020 Posted July 9, 2020 "Who Would Ship A Kit Without Packing It In A Box???" Never underestimate the incompetence of stupidity, or the carelessness of greed. Since I learned this, I'm not a lot happier, but I'm less surprised by sheer idiocy.
RichCostello Posted July 9, 2020 Posted July 9, 2020 Just got a poorly packed kit 2 days ago from a retailer that I've bought from many times before. Never had a problem before, but this time the kit was stuck in a box that was too big, with a crumpled wad of paper shoved in one end for padding(no padding). The box was crushed, and so was the body in the kit.

I'm pretty sure I ordered 2 LR kits from that same outfit. They arrived in the same kind of flimsy cardboard, and one box end was badly crushed. The kits were fine but I won't be ordering from them again.
Tom Geiger Posted July 9, 2020 Posted July 9, 2020 Since we are sharing badly wrapped packages, I dug up this photo from more than 10 years ago. It was a manual transmission for my 65 Barracuda... arrived completely wrapped in duct tape! FedEx Ground!
Bucky Posted July 9, 2020 Posted July 9, 2020 I recently received a Polyglass Gasser Pontiac kit from an eBay seller with a 99.8% rating and over 154,000 feedback. It came in a bubble pack yellow envelope. The main problem with that is the mail carrier decided to cram it in the mailbox instead of putting it where she normally puts boxed packages. When I opened the package, I found one end of the kit box was crushed in a bit. After opening the kit, I found no damage to any parts. However, I don't think I'll buy from that eBay seller again.

Pete J. Posted July 9, 2020 Posted July 9, 2020 (edited) Main reason I buy so much stuff from Hobby Link Japan(other than great prices). Every thing is shrink warped to a flat piece of cardboard and than loaded in a sturdy box that has plenty of space on all sides. Never had anything from them arrive in any condition other than perfect. Edited July 9, 2020 by Pete J.

Even items bough in their shops are packaged like they're going to be shipped-off ! My friend brought a Maneki Neko statuette back from Tokyo ; he bought it at one of the stores there as a gift for me ( I love that iconic talisman ! ) . When he gave it to me , the box was 110% perfect , with not so much as a blemished corner ! I asked him if he had it shipped to his home ( Long Beach , Ca. ) , and he said , "No ! That's how the package was off the shelf ! " . Same thing with some items he bought in Seoul a few years ago --- absolutely perfect .
Bugatti Fan Posted July 9, 2020 Posted July 9, 2020 A few years ago I agreed a purchase from a private seller and duly sent a payment immediately after. I was told that he had sold the kit on to someone else despite our agreement, and had the cheek to send me another kit without phoning me first so that I could just ask for my money back It was badly packaged and arrived damaged. This was duly sent back to get my money refunded but lost out because of the cost of posting back the unauthorised kit he sent me as a substitute. The guy refused to reimburse my postage costs to return the damaged kit. I will never deal with that guy again. It all came about because he responded to a want advert of mine on another forum at the time.
Fabrux Posted July 9, 2020 Posted July 9, 2020 Has anyone else received parcels lately where the packing material is used bubble mailers? ??♂️
stitchdup Posted July 9, 2020 Posted July 9, 2020 As an aside, I just recieved a kit purchased on ebay, paid very little for the kit but it still came with all the loose parts bagged, stuffed with bubble wrap and in a box I could stand on safely. To me that how it should be done.
