I was watching TV earlier and seen a Hobby Lobby commercial saying they have 50% off coupons for the holidays.... Thought maybe you guys and gals would be interested.... ?

The Hobby Lobby 40% off model kits sale is back on for the coming week (12/14 thru 12/21/20).  I got their e-mail this morning.

The e-mail also mentions 50% off, but only in certain categories of stuff.  Wall decor, candle-making supplies and other boring junk.  Model kits aren't in those categories.  They're mentioned separately.

Went to Hobby Lobby yesterday for a bottle of paint with my 40% off coupon of course. Ad in the paper showed 40% off all models but there was no sign in that section at the store. Would think they'd want to promote that but guess not. Nothing I wanted anyway. Seems to be the same kits I saw the last time I was there a month or so ago.

You can still use the 40% all year round. Go to Hobby Lobby app or website on your phone and click the 40% coupon on there. Or you can print it out off your computer.

I use it all the time even if its not advertised.

I'm too lazy to print it out.  I signed up for Hobby Lobby e-mails, so the 40% off coupon comes to my cellphone every week. When I get to the HL check-out, the cashier scans the coupon code right off my phone.  No paper, no printing!

Michael's is different, or it was the last time I used their one of their coupons.  I had to have the paper coupon, which the cashier printed at the check-out counter.  After that, I would go to the Michael's website and print the coupon myself, then take it in to the store. But I haven't bought anything at Michael's in quite a while, so they might be paperless now too.

I was in Michael's about a year ago and found a kit, which is amazing in itself.  Anyway when I checked out I showed them my coupon on the telephone and got 40% off.  I happened to be wearing my retired USAF hat and the cashier asked if I was a veteran.  When I answered yes, she gave me another 10% off, so I walked out with a kit at a pretty reasonable price.  However I was back in there a few months later and the cashier would only give me either/or not both.

All you need to do is look up hobbylobby.com on your phone. One of the headings is "Coupons".  Click on that, choose the print option and the coupon pops up. Just show that to the cashier.  They can scan the bar code.  Works every time!

I knew model kits doesn't qualify for 50% off. It never does.

Sorry about that..... ?

I should have looked into it before mentioning it....

Per my son who has a buddy in management at Hobby Lobby the 40% coupon will end forever FEB 28. No real reason was given  other than 'current market conditions' was given for the end of the 40% off. The retired banking analyst in me sees the $15 hour wages along with other rising cost and taxes made this happen. So get those models at 40% before March 1 folks!!

They need to stock kits actually worth the use of the coupon much less at full+ retail. One more reason I stopped shopping there. Much like Michael's they slowly replaced quality name brand art supplies with vastly inferior house brand chinese garbage. Thank goodness I have a local art store and a great LHS that's very competitive on pricing. The few dollars more I might have to pay for something is worth keeping them in business.

I’d be surprised unless Michael’s does the same thing although their model and supplies selection is terrible compared to HL.  I’m sure they have done analysis of how many other things people buy in addition to the on item @ 40% off the retails price.  Sure there are people that just buy one model kit or whatever else but the model aisle account for I’m guessing 5% of total store sales if that much.  If the Federal minimum wage is doubled them yes large retailers may cut back on deep discounts but the minimum wage should reflect the cost of living in that are as most jobs pay more or less depending on the locality.  Try getting workers at $7.50 an hour in any major city - it isn’t realistic.  I’ve never seen the retail prices differ from one state to another but perhaps it will as not all national stores have the same overhead depending on where their stores are located.  Kmart and Sears closed the least profitable locations first but it did not help and we all how that ended and they were were getting crushed by better run companies like Walmart etc.

Our Michael's store have not had more than a 20% coupon for over a year now. The 20% still doesn't bring the inflated price down to what I can get product from my local merchants for.

I get a 40% off coupon every day in an email from Micheals.

One thing about the 40 % off coupon at Hobby Lobby is that it's off of their inflated MSRP.  The kits that I'm interested in have a suggested list price of around $30. The same kit at a local Hobby Shop that I go to is around $26 to $27 for the exact same kit. The Hobby Shop is selling their kits at the manufactures suggested list price and that gives everyone a little mark up that they deserve. While the Hobby Lobby after 40% coupon price may still be a dollar or more less expensive they just don't seem to have the selection and the latest issue models as the standalone Hobby Shop that I go to. I would suggest you shop around before making any big purchases.

Interesting.. no doubt the 40% off coupon was designed that you’d buy a cart full of craft stuff and get the discount off one item.

And no doubt people are abusing it,  buying just one item at the discount. I remember one guy posting with glee that he got four models at the discount by putting his wife and two kids on the line with him as individual customers / single transactions.  Although perfectly legal and within their terms, it goes against their intent and is costing them money.

Am I guilty? Oh yea!  I can drive through their lot on my way to other stores. I stop in to see if they got any new models, or anything on clearance. If not I’ll buy one thing at the discount so it’s not a wasted trip... a can of Testors paint, glue, pack of brushes etc.

Ha! I do too whenever I get the chance. I like to tell the missus "Hey, let's stop at Micheals for a sec. I wanna see what they got new in model kit stock" LOL!!  Most time is the same old, same old. With the new year in full swing,. I've got to make another stop soon.

Interesting, I'm on their email list, get bombarded with 3 - 6 emails a day and have never received anything larger than 20% coupon off for a long time. No big deal as I stated before I definitely have better places to spend my money. The only reason I haven't unsubscribed is ever so often they do have something on sale or a new product I can use. I realize unfortunately that other than web based shopping some have only Michael's or Hobby Lobby as an actual brick and mortar. It's unfortunate that that specialty retail has seen such a decline but I'm sure there's a whole other thread on that somewhere here.

My HL has all kits at 100% MSRP. AMT average MSRP is now $32 and Revell $30.  So at my store the 40% was hard to beat.....that and NO local hobby shops at all.

The sad fact is that this has hurt the hobby overall. When Avenel Hobbies in New Jersey went out of business after 30 years, the owner told me it was a direct result of the Hobby Lobby that had opened a mile or two up the road.

He said his kit sales dried up, and customers would show up with the HL coupon and demand he matched it.  He said he couldn’t, their price was less than he paid his distributor for the kits!

And we all did this to save a few bucks. Destroyed the long term for a quick immediate buck!

I just picked up the Round 2 release of the '66 Buick Wildcat kit yesterday (in addition to it being a fun build I liked the vintage box art) at Hobby Lobby. It's a more recent addition on their shelves despite the kit being out since 2019 and with the 40% coupon it was 14.99 plus tax.

Especially property taxes!  The county I live in jumped about 15% across the board.  A neighboring county had a similar jump and when questioned, they admitted the state pushed them to increase it.

I do commercial leasing across the country and landlord's are complaining about absolutely huge jumps that, per the lease, gets passed along to the tenants but at some point they know tenants will start shutting the doors.  And if they improve their property, the value goes up even more so they are further punished by more taxes.
