pack rat Posted October 25, 2020 Posted October 25, 2020 (edited) My latest restoration; an AMT '64 GTO. I've never fussed over the Monogram or Polar Lights kits to compare them to the 1:1 car, but to me this is the "proper" '64 GTO kit. Sure, it's a simple old '60's-era kit with the metal axle through the oil pan etc etc, but I just like the old stuff and to me this one looks right. Basically box-stock. I was missing the AMT hood inserts so I massaged a Monogram hood to fit. The fit is a little wonky at the front corners, but I have the AMT hood painted to match just in case I ever find the inserts. Paint is Tamiya TS-74 clear red over TS-38 gunmetal to simulate Marimba Red; not bang-on but I'm satisfied with the look. Edited October 25, 2020 by pack rat
doorsovdoon Posted October 25, 2020 Posted October 25, 2020 When I read the description and saw the first photo I was going to say it looks pretty nice, which it does, but then I scrolled down and saw what you made of it! Very nicely done, hard to believe it's the same car. Great job!
Snake45 Posted October 26, 2020 Posted October 26, 2020 Very, VERY nice! And you're right, this IS The Good One. Well done and model on!

charger74 Posted October 26, 2020 Posted October 26, 2020 Very Nice, the color looks great.and i really like those hubcaps
Plowboy Posted October 26, 2020 Posted October 26, 2020 I gotta agree with you Mike! This is the good one! Very nice restoration!
Spottedlaurel Posted October 26, 2020 Posted October 26, 2020 Excellent work. I have no ability to say how authentic the colour is, but the combination has worked out very well.
peekay Posted October 26, 2020 Posted October 26, 2020 That looks really great! I restored the AMT Tempest convertible a few years ago and agree that they're the better kits.
espo Posted October 26, 2020 Posted October 26, 2020 Man that color is striking to say the least. I like the bright white interior. I would keep those old Hurst Mags around as a switch set of wheels. Very nice job getting the rear of the roof to match up with the body. Like you I'm also a fan of the early AMT bodies but with the metal axles I just cut them to length and use them as a spindle and fill the hole in the engine. This along with a little radiator detailing and hoses and they look almost as nice as any of the newer better designed kits. You got all of the chrome trim nice and cleanly done.
eleanor_350 Posted October 26, 2020 Posted October 26, 2020 Awesome save! I wish someone would make a new tooling of a 65 GTO as a true hardtop.

Bob Ellis Posted October 26, 2020 Posted October 26, 2020 I have couple of these AMT 64 GTOs If you stand them against the Polar Lights version, it becomes very obvious why they are superior. Plus they build well and easily.
Bob Ellis Posted October 26, 2020 Posted October 26, 2020 What is sad, is that Modelhaus is dead and items like the hood scoops are tough to find . Polar Lights version is way different shape and won't fit. In another world , no pun intended.

Grumpa Posted October 26, 2020 Posted October 26, 2020 Beautiful restoration MIke, and the color came out gorgeuos!
drodg Posted October 27, 2020 Posted October 27, 2020 Looks so good and period correct. It looks like you freshened the chrome. Did you do it yourself or sent them out?

Front/rear bumpers were touched up after cleaning with srategically-applied BMF and Molotow liquid chrome. I'm still experimenting with the Molotow. The ink can give pretty good results when applied with a brush to some areas, not so good in others (applying it with the pens isn't worth the trouble due to the "dulling" issue discussed by others). The GTO scripts and grille/headlight areas were done this way. but I also tried it on the wheel lip moldings; they looked like BLAH_BLAH_BLAH_BLAH. The profile pic (second from bottom) was taken before I re-did the moldings with BMF.
