My 2.75 Builds for 2020

While I attempted to complete my last build right up to the last hour remaining in 2020, it was not to be. Nonetheless I did complete two builds, the Inca Jewel and the Scarab Mk IV.

The 49 Ford is a mild custom with a 57 Y-Block warmed over. The interior has been modified with new door panels, buckets and tuck ‘n’ roll upholstery. It was completed on the  BOYD thread earlier this past year.

 

 

 

The Scarab is the old Monogram slot car/curbside  to which a SBC was added to fill the gaping holes in the rear deck. The interior was also detailed with P/E belts, new wheel, pedals, instrument decals, and metallic paint finishes. Decided to leave the body devoid of sponsors or numbers to highlight the striking body shape. This was also a WIP that was begun a few years back.

 

The 57 Chev  snap-tite was started early in December as a slump buster to get me back on track. Yet, I couldn’t resist adding to the build with a detailed interior. I haven’t been able to build a box stock kit for decades now! Came close to finishing it, now it’ll be my first completion for 2021.

That's a good set for the year. The Scarab is interesting but I love the detail work of the engine bay and interior on the Ford.

Thanks Dave, one of the aspects I enjoy with the vintage kits is to update them with newer parts. Found that the one piece tub interiors are quite easy to update with replacement door panels.

Thanks Bruce, it won’t be long for the Chev, then I have a BOYD subject, a Porsche 934 and a Cannonballl candidate. Plus ongoing threads on the 62 Savoy and Chezoom modification.

Thanks Bill, yes I enjoy the early sixties era of road racers. I have the AMT Hussein and McLaren Elva and Monogram Ferrari 275 in the stash. While based on slot car bodies, they do build up into decent curbsides.

Thanks Don for checking out the builds. It seems that I end up spending most of my time on the engines, perhaps that’s why it takes so long to complete. In a way curbsides have their advantages.

Thanks Joe, I was looking at your three builds just as your response came in. Great work on the Maverick, amazing detail! The VW in 1/35 is very impressive (noticed how Kurt jumped on it!).

All 3 3/4 (that's the 'Merican version) look great!  The Scarab, I had the IMC kit which I sold in Phoenix, sort of regret it, but have too many kits anyway.  What are the gauges?

Thanks Kurt! ? The gauges are from a Slixx decal sheet of generic instrument panels. By the way, might you be thinking of the Lola T70 made by IMC rather than the Scrarab, as I am only aware of the Monogram curbside?

Two fine models for 2020, Misha. When I first got back into modeling now almost 12 years ago I started a '49 which had a very similar grill treatment - I think you may have even brought the kit rolled pan in at the center somewhat, as I did. It's good to see the fine job you did with it, even if mine still languishes in its box all these years later... The tuck 'n' roll interior is particularly nice. I seem to have missed the w,i,p, on this so I'll ask here: what are the front seats? They look great.

The Scarab is truly a sharp rendition, as well. I dig the 'Vette valve covers peaking through what is actually a curbside kit to begin with. All the best for 2021.

Thanks for the kind words Bernard! The WIP can be found at http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/topic/151193-inca-jewel/ , it was also part of the first BOYD thread of the year. I used the kit’s custom front roll pan although it required of massaging to blend it all in. I then stripped the chrome off the front grill and performed surgery on it to creat the floating prop look. The seats are from the 64 Fairlane kit. Connected to the WIP thread is a story of twins inheriting the cherry Shoebox from Grandpa in the mid sixties and deciding to mildly customize and hot rod their  new ride.

For the Scarab I used the SBC from the AMT 63 Vette as it has valve covers with delicate “Corvette” scripts on a rather unimpressive engine block. I also thin down the plastic on wheel wells and other body openings to achieve a scale like appearance which adds to the overall look in a subtle manner.

Thanks Bill and Carl for your comments. While it is just two builds, I am very happy about how they turned out. Hopefully the Belair will be the first build of many for 2021.

Beautiful looking "shoe box", I'm a big fan of these and like how you captured the look of the interior. Been following the '57 Bel Air and it's just so close. The Scarab is very nice considering you started with a slot car body.
