Beautiful boats.

Probably the best way to build a scale version of one of these curve monsters would be to do a plank on frame design, just like the originals.

Plastic would be sturdier, but wood strips would look way cool!

The wood boats of old are without a question a sight to behold. For those with an interest there is a Concours d'Elegance for wooden boats at Lake Tahoe on 8/12/22. I have attended in the past when I lived in Sacramento and it was a great one-day outing.  I suggest anyone interested to look up the show and the pictures of past shows as well.

The Concours can also be found on YTube. How about a 50' boat built in the '30's with twin 12-cylinder aircraft engines with over 1000 hp each with a stainless-steel roof that is still in operation.

Beautiful vintage boats in this thread. Here's a Riva Tritone.1958-Riva-Tritone-Crop-2.2-2048x1116.jpg.e72fbe3d6f7cd83f96437d9af0238564.jpg

I know there used to be a Riva Boat dealer at Lake Tahoe some years ago. They have those cool looking headlights up under the bow.

  • 1 year later...

I Love the old wooden boats. Being a cabinet maker for about 30 years I appreciate wooden anything! Not quite the same as the boats pictured but my dad had a 28' wooden Trojan cabin cruiser with a single screw, 318 Chrysler engine. It had teak wood for the decking. It was a fun boat but man every winter we had to dry dock her inorder to scrap the barnacles and repaint her bottom.. I wish I had pictures to show. If I come across any I'll come back and post them.

My dad picked up this one last summer.  1958 Lyman 18’.   It has a little interesting history behind it.  The original owner bought it for his wife.  She took one look at it and said “what do I want that for?”  So the guy put it in his barn and there it sat.  For 63 years.

Two years ago it was purchased and restored.  Then last year my dad bought it.  It had NEVER  been put in the water!  Dad debated what to do with it, but after much thought, he decided it was a shame not to put it in and enjoy it for its intended purpose.  Good choice.

Taking it home.  There's my dad,  proud new owner.

First time it ever saw water.  At this point we just floated it on the trailer to see how much water it was going to take on.  Very little actually.  Considering it’s age, I thought it would take on more.

Timely post. I was in Chestertown, MD this weekend for the Sultana Downrigging Festival. Lots of sailing vessels up to maybe 250 feet you can tour or sail in. There's a display of these wooden speedboats dating back to 1904, all beautifully built and crafted.

I didn't take any pictures.
