I started this thread exactly 2 months ago, feeling a bit guilty about buying more than building.

Now with about 5000 views and 120 responses, my guilt has been completely erased.

You guys are great therapists!

Here's my medication for the last 2 months:

Kits 12 Mars.jpg

That Italeri Renault R5 rally car is a decent kit. But dry fit the rear suspension before you glue everything together. When I built mine there ended up being about 3/32" difference in wheelbase from drivers side to passenger side. I didn't notice until the body was on it and the rear tires lined up differently in the rear wheelwells from left to right.

Other than that the kit was really nice and has great detail.  I might even buy it again and build it right, looking out for that rear suspension issue.

I have approximately 700 (100 of them are 1/43 scale) but with more years behind me than ahead of me I'm trying to not buy much anymore. But then last Monday I picked up a Polar Lights NASCAR Torino  oh well lol.

This is a typical construction feature of several Renault FWD models in the 60's and 70's: the arrangement of the torsion-bar suspension results in different wheelbases left and right: for instance, the Renault 5 has a 30 mm shorter wheelbase on the right side than on the left.

I love these threads.  If I recall correctly, my stash was nearly 100 kits at one point, but I'd sell some off every so often if I lost interest or had duplicates, etc.   I was down to maybe 3 dozen last year when I moved all my hobby stuff into our shed.  I recently moved them all back into the house (the shed was demo'd last week), and was a little surprised to find I'm back over 60 kits.  The good news is that I have a dedicated hobby area in the house now, and I've built more kits in the last year than I did in the previous ten years.

I knew about the wheelbase thing on the R5 but it's so easy to forget. Good idea to build chassis and dry fit to body before setting on cutting fenders and adding the flares.

42 kits, two 1/24, the rest 1/25, mainly AMT. Some will be merged into one car, at least five maybe ten will be finished this year, the rest will take me ten years to build and that feels good. Since I can only paint on one of the sites I'm building on, it's a bit jerky.

edit: 43..

I am very fortunate, my wife doesn't mind and fact that my son is also an avid model builder might help. I have been modelling for close to sixty five years and started my collection about forty years ago.

Real nice collection, nice to see all the box art and you have had plenty of time to collect them.  Thanks for sharing..

I'm actually a little concerned about the stashes.

How many of you have had the discussion with your spouse or loved ones?

What happens to the stash when you're gone?

Wifey and the kids don't have any interest in models whatsoever. So when I go, do I want to leave her a stash of 200 + kits to deal with? Does she bother trying to sell them? Probably not. Probably just donates them somewhere. I doubt they would get tossed.

I don't think I'm going any time soon, I'm not even 50 yet. But part of me has thought about seriously downsizing.

I have a friend that his dad had over 1500 kits and collected since the early 50’s. Really cool stuff that I have never seen before. He had passed, and she advertised the whole collection and the guy bought the whole collection for $18,000. Plus he was into ho trains and he saw that and gave her $10,000 for the train collection. Sometimes there is a happy ending.

We buy intending to build.

Reality kicks in. We sell and generally make a loss!

Joking apart, modellers of a certain age need to make a list of where best to dispose of stashes. All too often bereaved relatives who do not know the worth might just have it all dumped! Dealers don't pay top dollar but better to get something rather than nothing if it gets thrown into landfill.

I started to get worried with a stash of about 10 new unbuilt ones and about 20 previously built restoration projects but I have no worries anymore! Great to see pictures of such a great collections, thanks everyone for sharing.

I recently unloaded about 100 kits from my stash. Of course that means I'll end up buying 200 to fill the holes on the shelves! I build aircraft & space aside from cars, lately I've been doing some soul searching coming to the realization even if I did build everything, where would I display it?

With the demise of local model shops and the probability of impulse buying whilst in them, in theory our stashed kits pile  should be gradually getting smaller as we bulld. Not so I fear! The heavily discounted kit or EBay bargain still beckons!

In most cases our stashed kits far outweigh the available time to build them, even when retired. The fact is that as our modelling skills improve, each build takes longer as we seek perfection, super detailing and converting etc. I only buy kits that I know that I will build now and ruthlessly dispose of any others in the stash. My stash is down to about 20 kits maximum now, that I feel will be manageable. If I buy a new kit now it is because I really want to build it, or it is of a subject that really interests me that has not been kitted before. I then select the kit that becomes lowest in the pecking order in my stash and offload it.

Looking at some of the stashes on this thread there cannot be many American cars that have not been kit subjects in some form or other down the years. Not much doing this side of the pond unless really into Porsches, Ferraris and Lamborghinis getting done to death as kits down the years. But it is getting a bit better of late.

Compared to UK cars, you're right. But in reality, only a small segment of American cars have been kitted. By the looks of things, the majority of American kits are from the 1960s-1970s .

My stash from 50 years of building & buying, approx 1100, I'll never build them all. They sure look good on display, I enjoy building & just looking at the box art etc. They mostly were stored in cartons until I got a dedicated hobby room. Now I can fully enjoy them. The steel shelving are 2 deep.

I have sold off 26 of my 1/25 and 6 of my 1/24 kits in the last 2 weeks.

These are not all of them but I have just about 300 kits right now. I have no plans or desire to downsize as I have plenty room and no anxiety about whether or not I'll ever get to them all (I won't). I enjoy looking at them and my wife doesn't mind. Top shelf over the door is two deep.
