The Beach-Cloner: A Tim Boyd Tribute build of the Beachcomber 29 Model A Woody

I've really enjoyed reading the @tim boyd posts about the Model A's, especially @Dennis Lacy 's woody and closed cab pickup. Tim posted a picture of this model A while back, as well a link to his Fotki album of all his builds. Needless to say, I didn't get much done at work that day!  I immediately got on ebay and ordered a copy of SAE 57 with the Woody on the cover. Wow, talk about nostalgia flooding my brain. I remember wearing out that issue, reading it over and over again and drooling at that cool woody. It dawned on me that I had that kit in my stash and it wouldn't be too difficult to just build one for myself... 

So, thank you Tim for being such an inspiration to a young kid of 11, and I'm still building all these years later.

Just watched the video. The woody is mint, you nailed the stance, the color combo is as good as or better than the original, and it's a great tribute. Very, very cool.

Hey Dan, yes I'm out here, and yes I just watched the video. 

So, so cool that you chose to do this project, and share it with us.  Honestly, when I did this one some 35 years ago, I never, never even remotely dreamed it would inspire someone to do a such an exact duplicate so many years later.  As far as the colors go, I think your choices are actually closer to the original than you give yourself credit for, particularly when seen at the end of the video under bright lighting.  I also think your choice of front tires is actually more era-appropriate than what i did.  And, of course, you are spot on with regards to your substitution of the front suspension for the modern era Revell '32 Ford components, as i recall getting the front end stance right was the biggest pain of that whole build, and the new parts take away that problem as your results show.   The resulting finsihed model is truly a tribute to the original, and a very fine one at that.   

Anyway, great job, and it is hard to convey exactly how I feel right now, so just let me sum up by saying a very big "thank you"!!!!   TIM

I already gushed over this in my YouTube comment but I had to show it some love here, too! I absolutely LOVE it as Tim’s 29 Woody is one of my other all-time favorites of his magazine how-to hot rods. Not only did you nail it front to back but it’s also VERY cleanly built.

Thanks Dennis!  I really appreciate that. And thanks to all the other kind comments. I really enjoyed this build. 

I have an idea to recreate something like the "One Night at Skip's" Diorama by Chuck Layman from another issue of SAE, but that's an enormous undertaking and unlikely. But I can dream...

He had a motor under the table and a track so the cars actually circled the restaurant.  My mind exploded when I got this issue and saw that.

I was at my local Home Depot a couple of days ago buying basement paint and stopped by the spray paint section. 

In person, looking at the actual paint can color that Dan chose for his tribute build, it looked to me to be nearly identical to the original Krylon paint from 35 years ago that I used for my project!    

Way to go, Dan!   TB
