Dan Hay Posted October 30, 2023 Posted October 30, 2023 (edited) I've really enjoyed reading the @tim boyd posts about the Model A's, especially @Dennis Lacy 's woody and closed cab pickup. Tim posted a picture of this model A while back, as well a link to his Fotki album of all his builds. Needless to say, I didn't get much done at work that day! I immediately got on ebay and ordered a copy of SAE 57 with the Woody on the cover. Wow, talk about nostalgia flooding my brain. I remember wearing out that issue, reading it over and over again and drooling at that cool woody. It dawned on me that I had that kit in my stash and it wouldn't be too difficult to just build one for myself... So, thank you Tim for being such an inspiration to a young kid of 11, and I'm still building all these years later. Here are some pics of the build. The video below is private and won't go live on YouTube until this afternoon, so you great folks of MCM forum get a sneak peak of the video before anyone else. For those who don't want to watch the rather long build video, here are some pics of the build. Edited October 30, 2023 by Dan Hay 14
Flatout Posted October 30, 2023 Posted October 30, 2023 Very Cool Dan…Remember that issue and the Woody! 1
ColonelKrypton Posted October 30, 2023 Posted October 30, 2023 Very cool indeed. There is a warmth to using real wood on a build like this; really makes it come alive. cheers, Graham 1
espo Posted October 30, 2023 Posted October 30, 2023 Great looking Surf Woody. The only difference I can see is the shade of the wood stain. 1
Maindrian Pace Posted October 30, 2023 Posted October 30, 2023 Just watched the video. The woody is mint, you nailed the stance, the color combo is as good as or better than the original, and it's a great tribute. Very, very cool. 1
tim boyd Posted October 31, 2023 Posted October 31, 2023 Hey Dan, yes I'm out here, and yes I just watched the video. So, so cool that you chose to do this project, and share it with us. Honestly, when I did this one some 35 years ago, I never, never even remotely dreamed it would inspire someone to do a such an exact duplicate so many years later. As far as the colors go, I think your choices are actually closer to the original than you give yourself credit for, particularly when seen at the end of the video under bright lighting. I also think your choice of front tires is actually more era-appropriate than what i did. And, of course, you are spot on with regards to your substitution of the front suspension for the modern era Revell '32 Ford components, as i recall getting the front end stance right was the biggest pain of that whole build, and the new parts take away that problem as your results show. The resulting finsihed model is truly a tribute to the original, and a very fine one at that. Anyway, great job, and it is hard to convey exactly how I feel right now, so just let me sum up by saying a very big "thank you"!!!! TIM 1
Dan Hay Posted October 31, 2023 Author Posted October 31, 2023 @tim boyd Your words are very kind and mean a lot! Thank you again for your dedication to the hobby all these years and your participation in this forum. Just browsing your fotki albums has given me lots of ideas for future builds. Hopefully our paths will cross someday and I can shake your hand and thank you in person.
XYHARRY Posted October 31, 2023 Posted October 31, 2023 Nice tribute build there Dan, really well done. Cheers, David.?? 1
ncbuckeye67 Posted November 2, 2023 Posted November 2, 2023 Wow, what a beautiful build! My cutting ability (or lack of) would force me to use Washi tape, or contact paper for the "wood". Well done sir! 1
Dennis Lacy Posted November 5, 2023 Posted November 5, 2023 I already gushed over this in my YouTube comment but I had to show it some love here, too! I absolutely LOVE it as Tim’s 29 Woody is one of my other all-time favorites of his magazine how-to hot rods. Not only did you nail it front to back but it’s also VERY cleanly built. 1

I really appreciate that. And thanks to all the other kind comments. I really enjoyed this build. I have an idea to recreate something like the "One Night at Skip's" Diorama by Chuck Layman from another issue of SAE, but that's an enormous undertaking and unlikely. But I can dream... He had a motor under the table and a track so the cars actually circled the restaurant. My mind exploded when I got this issue and saw that. Edited November 6, 2023 by Dan Hay
Rattlecan Dan Posted November 6, 2023 Posted November 6, 2023 Really nice build. Sweet tribute. Communal admiration. Nice. 1
Mr. Metallic Posted November 8, 2023 Posted November 8, 2023 Very clean build. You nailed your tribute. Nicely done.
tim boyd Posted November 9, 2023 Posted November 9, 2023 I was at my local Home Depot a couple of days ago buying basement paint and stopped by the spray paint section. In person, looking at the actual paint can color that Dan chose for his tribute build, it looked to me to be nearly identical to the original Krylon paint from 35 years ago that I used for my project! Way to go, Dan! TB 1
