MPC 73'DUSTER

Since i'm still having problems with my 69'Camaro I started a new build,i'm hoping have this kit and the Camaro done for a modelshow in Burnaby in 3 weeks.Saw I pic on Instagram and fell in love with the color instantly.Going with a white vinyl roof,undecided about the interior color,already have the keith Marks decals.

I put a blackwash on the body lines and ready for primer coats.

Painted the body,but got a couple fuzzies in the paint,so i'll just sand them out and apply a couple more coats of color.I'm really happy with the color and I think a khaki or beige interior will look much better than the typical black interior.

Good colour choice! I think you're right about interior colour; beige will suit that a lot better than black.

I had a 73 340 Duster that I took delivery on 8/31/72 that was the same color.

Mine had a honey gold bench seat interior, black rubber mat instead of carpet, 4 speed, dog dish caps and stripe delete. I was 19 at the time and wanted a "sleeper".

Quick car, only other options were PDB (required with 340's) 3:23 Sure Grip and an AM/FM radio.

Got hit head on by a drunk driver in May of '74 and it was totaled.

I miss it, was my favorite of all the cars I've owned.

I recognise that you're building my favourite model year Duster ! 

That MPC annual has been my White Whale since seeing one at a model contest some 32 years ago ! I had no idea that anyone made a '73 Duster -- I was shocked to see one !

I have two "glue bomb" 1973 Duster kits which I got for a song via eBay some 10 years ago . I'm waiting for my skills to "re-improve" before I tackle building them ( using the AMT 1971 340 for its superior chassis , engine compartment , 340 , etc. ) .

JY9 is a beautiful colour . I used to see quite a few Dusters --and Darts , et alia-- around when I was younger .

Earth tones were very popular in the 70's and this is one of the best. I never owned one but a couple of people I knew did and they all loved them. My vote, if it counts, for the interior would be a light beige as well as the Vinyl Roof.

Great build and I love the color. My dad had a white 73 "Gold Duster" with a slant 6 in the mid 80's. My brother and I terrorized the roads in it for a couple of years. I liked that car.

Thanks for the comments everyone!i painted the interior Radome Tan with a couple light coats of semi gloss clear, flocking was a peach/buff mixture.Mpc's interior is a mixed bag,apparently you couldn't get a console and a stick in a Mopar A body after 1969.I decided to go with the auto so i grinded out the molded in pedals and replaced them with the 71'duster pedals.For the dash i used Keith Marks decals?

The Mpc engine is really undersized,so i took the one from the 71'Duster and added a resin auto transmission,the engine color was made from mixing chrysler blue with white paint.I still need to add more wiring though,the air cleaner is a parts box item with a Keith Marks decal.

Very nice project Curtis, I really love these Duster!  I also had a neighbour that had a 73 Duster painted this color with a beige interior but had a slant 6 engine and a 3 speed manual transmission.  Great job so far, the decal on the dash and the air cleaner look fine!

Yes, I wait to glue the air cleaner on too.  Many times a hood wouldn’t close correctly because of the air cleaner.

Okay,i'm back at it with a small update i ended up repainting the kit and used Keith Marks decals.The side decals went down nicely but the back decals tore and kinda fell apart on me?,but i'm pretty sure i have a back up set, i also added some photo etched door locks to.?

Wow....yet another Model Cars project close to my heart.  As my own first new car was a 1973 Duster 340, bought off the floor at Highland Chrysler Plymouth in Grand Rapids in late December, 1972.  Mine was Silver Frost metallic (a silver gray with a lot of flake) with a blake interior and stripes, no vinyl roof, and the Space Duster package.   Within a few months I had added factory chrome wheel lip moldings, G70 14 RWL Goodyears in back to go with the E70's in front, cranked the t-Bars down in front, and was running 14x6/14x7 Appliance Aluminum wheels.  I've had the MPC kit set set aside for what....47 years now....maybe one day I will finally get it built.   

Meanwhile, I did just finish another model of the new car I bought a year later, using the Duster as my trade in....a factory ordered 1974 Plymouth Road Runner E58 360 hi-po.....

Duster is looking fine! I had a '72 Demon in this color, with black interior. Really liked that car.
