1/24 [Italeri] 1934 Rolls-Royce Phanthom II

Good afternoon friends. I decided to start my 20th anniversary build of a retro car.

My choice fell on another box from Italeri. Namely:

The most luxurious car in all aspects. Real luxury, the brand is a legend.

The box itself is a 2011 reissue.

Well, let's start by reviewing the content. A huge manual in A2 format.

Glazing. Here, of course, such a thing. It was in a sealed film. But there are scratches. Will be polished.

Rubber...arrrrrr, I hate this plastic one that fits together from 2 halves. Revell, AMT and MPC got me used to normal rubber.

The first sprue is black.

Detailing is even good.

The second sprue is beige.

Third sprue - chrome

The fourth is orange.

And the last one is gray.

Details is very, very good.

Spokes are great!

The impressions from the kit are extremely pleasant. Of the improvements, there will be traditionally an engine compartment: wiring, possibly a couple of hoses, etc. And also - the wife suggested to make a folding roof. In principle, nothing complicated, you will need to find some thin and at the same time flexible and strong wire, as well as the roof material itself.

For now, I will collect photo references and start processing the details.

I processed all the engine parts, there are not very many of them, but I had to tinker.

This is what the default Italeri gives us on the right.

A lot of things are missing. I like, at least, to make wires, then we take sprues and leftovers from previous sets and build from scratch.

We look at the left.

Some hell of a pornography, moving on to plastic surgery.

Much better this way.

I look forward to following your build.Built this one a few years back in the Star of India colour scheme. That car still exists so you should have no problem finding photos on the net. I used Alclad Polished aluminum for those body parts and mixed up a Tamiya lacquer Orange/Clear Orange for the body. The toughest part was masking and painting the wheels in metal with trim rings in orange. Finding good wire wheels might be a very good alternative. Work slowly and test fit everything, Italeri car kits can trip you up and while the old Monogram classics are easier to build these Italeri classics are more satisfying in the end.

I like how you took so many quality pictures of the kit, before commencing the build.  Great start on the engine with the detail.

Good luck with this build, Roman........ I have built one of these kits as a 1934 Rolls-Royce Phantom II, and just as you say, I did not like the Star of India colour scheme. Mine is black and magnolia (cream), and I made the soft top into a hard top, which is painted gloss black. The Italeri kit is a nice one to build, and the 6 cylinder inline engine is a good base from which to modify and add parts for more realism. The bonnet panels can be cut and made into the hinged panels for opening if you wish. This is a BIG car in 1:24 scale, and it builds into a nice model. You are off to a good start, Roman.

Also issued as a 1:8 Pocher kit. Maybe their instructions would be a good reference.

Great work so far!  Following because I found that kit cheap at a swap meet.  Thought about making it a "working/beater" Rolls, as seen on some of the British cattle ranches in Africa.  Or maybe a beat-up Shooting Brake.  There's just something appealing to me about taking a rare classic car and beating it up.  

Speaking of Shooting Brakes...I just found this awesome thing that somebody needs to build.  The photo caption said it's a Shooting Brake built in the former Rhodesia, but that's all I've been able to find out.

The wheels from the Italeri Phantom II fit prefectly in the Monogram Phantom II, and vice versa, if you want a set of wire wheels on your project

Good afternoon friends. Big update. A lot has been done.

Slightly refined the firewall.

I decided to cut holes. Wherever possible. But, as it turned out, this is a completely thankless job.

I do not know how to be friends with etched files at all.

I don't know how everyone uses them, but they are very thin and soft. To bend and break is godless.

Dismembered the hood and made the piano hinges.

More openings.

My kitties-assistants decided to try the body on a tooth and had to restore part of the windshield pillar

And then the most interesting part. I had an idea to make a working folding roof.

We take the basis.

And voila.

A mechanism came to the rescue from a broken umbrella and a paper clip.

But, to my regret, the idea was not destined to happen. The self-adhesive leather that I ordered on Aliexpress turned out to be thick for this case and not at all plastic. So the roof will only be unfolded.

But this is a hundred times better than a plastic from box.

That's all for now. Parts washed and ready to paint.

The folded hood mechanism that you assembled looked really good, Roman....... and it is a pity that this will not work for you, due to the thickness of the self-adhesive leather. What an interesting model this is !

If you have a way of cutting glass microscope slides to fit, the optical distortion would be eliminated and the effect on a quality car such as this would be superior!

I'm very interested to follow this, as I have it in my stash.

But as it is a unique car, I will follow the original color scheme ... 

That's why I didn't begin to built it : I'm afraid of realizing all this polished aluminium parts ...

Love the attention to detail here Roman, I appreciate the amount of work that has gone into this build. Definitely a labour of love!
