Bet that cost an arm and a leg?

My Buddy Mark has a lot of new model factory hiro kits. The wife bought it from him. They are expensive but if you want extreme detail, these are the kits for you. So far I have done 3. 1/12 cobra, 1/12 Ferrari p4 and a 1/24 Ferrari 166. I have a 917/30 and a 935/78 1/12 in progress. And everyone I bought from Mark at a substantial savings. But still expensive. You only live once, especially after this month where I have lost several friends. Here are some pics of the cars.

Here's the latest toy show glue bomb I bought, a couple months ago. '61 (?) Ranchero promo, mild custom. The black paint looks pretty well done and I think it will polish out nicely. I'm not wild about the red bed, but I can fix that with some rattlecan matte or semigloss black. The bullet taillights are not to my taste, but those can be easily replaced. Could use some better wheels and tires, too. And of course it needs a grille of some kind, but I should be able to come up with something--the custom front and rear pans mean I can put just about anything that will fit in there, or even scratchbuild a "tube" grille. Looking forward to making this my first post-stroke Snake-Fu "rescue." B)

Probably a kit, with the custom stuff on it.  You don't see many promos, and I don't know whether or not there was a friction version.  Pretty sure those would be acetate plastic anyway.

All were '61s.  None had an engine until AMT stuck the '66 Impala engine in for the 1977 budget series reissue.

I don't know why Ford wouldn't have wanted a promo for '60, but the bumpers from the '60 Falcon interchange and what little trim was on the body didn't change between the two.  Wheel covers are even the same, though '60 has black-filled recessed areas while '61 has white.

AMT moved a lot of those, there was an annual kit as well as the flat box Styline kit which was sold through '62.  Looks like a nice project, I have a couple of old builds which are radical customs (shortened, chopped top, etc).

You could be right. I said it was a promo because the engine is molded as part of the chassis, but I'm not familiar enough with these kits to know if that's the way the kits were or not. Hood is molded solid with the body, too.

ETA: I checked the instructions on the Drastic Plastic site and it looks like you're exactly right. ;)

Well, it finally arrived.  Got this on an on-line auction. It was listed as a '60 Mercury promo; however, I believe it is actually an original model kit.  Most promos I have seen have all that advertisement embossed on the chassis plate telling you of the advantages of that particular model.  This one has a clean chassis. Will probably disassemble, paint, and build as a shelf model. Question, I remember a link to a website that lists model year sales brochures.  I thought I marked it as a favorite, but cannot find it, any help will be appreciated.  I am wondering about those "Toyota truck" fender mirrors.
