Great build Al! Love me them big Mercs! ?
-
Funny how this thread popped up just as I've been having a terrible time foiling a 61 Invicta HT. I bought two packages directly from BMF earlier this year and just now opened the first one. It's marked New and Improved and it peels off the backing fine without curling but it just doesn't want to stick very good. Almost not at all. And it's not just the edges of the sheet but the center as well. Makes an already frustrating job a job you dread doing. Never really enjoyed it before, but I've done enough to know something is wrong with this stuff. And my build room is 12% humidity. Options are to mask off all the trim and spray either Spaz Stix or Molotow. What a pain. I've never had much luck with pens. Brushes with Molotow work better if you go slow and heavy, but you need to be really careful. Unfortunate way to end a build ?

Fixing glue on clear parts

Various brands of progressive polishes. I use either Novus 1,2, and 3 or Tamiya coarse, fine, and finish. Easy to apply in their order of grit ending with the finest. -
65 through 70 Cad DeVille front suspension
hedotwo replied to hedotwo's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I hadn't planned on working steering, but rather just getting the pieces together and straight without having to resort to kit robbing ? I'll need to mostly fab one new spindle but the other isn't bad. The center section of the tie rod will be fiddly. And Ron, thanks a bunch for the pics and the tie rod measurement. These will help me cobble this together and still use the kit wheel backs/covers/tires. Thanks guys! -
65 through 70 Cad DeVille front suspension
hedotwo replied to hedotwo's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I looked at a 67 Impala kit and I can see where I might be able to cobble up something with parts of that suspension, but at this point I really would rather not raid a full kit to finish this Caddie. If I can see what the Caddie parts look like on the sprue or off, but not installed, I might be able to save these Johan pieces. I've drilled out the brake drums so far and stripped the chrome from everything (chrome Cadillac suspension??? ?) and am ready to give it a shot. I know I need to come up with some round stock for the tie rod center piece. The way the brake drums attach to the spindles are what I'm hoping to understand better. Thanks Ron -
I haven't had any luck so far sourcing these replacement pieces for my 65 DeVille rebuild so I'm going to try and save what I have and get it together as best I can. Would anyone have close ups of these pieces in unbuilt condition? Especially the brake drums. I have the drawings from the Fotki instruction site but seeing the real pieces would help. I think any annual DeVille kit (not the 64 Oldies or any Eldo) from 64-70 might have these pieces as well as AMT 49 Mercs. Thanks!

Welcome aboard Steve! -
If you go the AMT Catalina route I have a spare chassis/suspension if you need it.

Where's the donor coming from?
-
You pointed me in the right direction Steve. I looked online and see them on the '64 Bonneville. If anyone has a need for any of these parts let me know. They're yours. Thanks

Nicely done on a tough kit Helmut!

Great builds! Favorite is the '47 Chev.

The build actually took a couple of months or more Mike. I stockpiled the pix as I went along and tried to put them in somewhat of an order when I posted in WIP. I'm definitely not a fast builder

Maybe, but I'm not sure I'm ready for another project like this ?

Never intended to be a show winner, I'm happy with the end result of this family car although there are many things that could be better. Two of the things I would've like to have done was to redo the windows to better replicate the 59 and add "Plymouth Suburban" scripting on the rear fenders. I really couldn't figure out a way to add the scripting and decided against attempting to mess with the greenhouse windows as this was my only donor. This one goes into the display case as is. The donors were the '59 Johan Fury HT and '60 Johan Cop Wagon. Exterior is Tamiya gray primer, Folk Art Succulent craft acrylic thinned with washer fluid, and Tamiya clear. Not remembering what his interior looked like I made a combination of Krylon Catalina Mist, Folk Art Greenscape and Ceramcoat Ivory. His car was a business stripper so no whitewalls. I made the Madison Scout decals. Thanks for looking

Wrapping this up to the point where I felt it was a decent enough replica of his 59. Made side trim from two sizes of round and half round stock taking care to try and keep everything somewhat level and straight, but the two sides came out not identical to each other yet close enough I guess. Needed to sand the trim after this to get them from standing out too much. Made up four door handles from flat and half round stock Needed to take a small section from the chassis to get the wheelbase right Finally into Tamiya gray primer Base color coat of Folk Art Succulent acrylic That wraps it up. I'll post a few pics of the finished build after all paint and assembly in the Under Glass section Thanks for following and the comments. Frustrating at times but I'm glad I did it.

Work finished on trying to recreate some of the tailgate features from the 59 and my attempt at making a passable wagon rear bumper from the HT's . I decided to leave the Plymouth script where it was on the 60 tailgate. A bit of Bondo Getting close to the finsh line
