Tamiya McLaren MP4/6 build
Funkychiken replied to Josie's topic in WIP: Other Racing: Road Racing, Land Speed Racers
Looking like a cool project! I will follow with great interest! -
Thanks Dann, appreciate it! body was sprayed with a few coats of Zero "gulf" blue, and then a few light coats of Zero 1K clear. I've filled the panel lines with Enamel Blue mixed with black. it looks OK, mostly due to the well moulded details of the shell. I am impressed with the Airfix quility here - esp. for the scale. then after a light polish, i'm part way through applying decals.

After leaving over night for the PVA to set, when taking off the tape, it left print marks in the clear red! had to sand down a little with micomesh. then carefuly mask the underside & give it a few coats of Tamiya Smoke thinned with Lacquer. this tail light process has now taken a week! I dont't understand how folk can build a car on a weekend...

Johnathan, Alex & Dann, thanks for your kind comments! The tail light is taking longer than I imagined. It's had a few hand brushed coates of clear red & orange, left to dry, then it snapped. so here i'm using the body as a jog to glue the 2 pieces together.

Hi Kurt, I did this kit a few years ago, here's the wip and finished car links: I thought it was a great kit, so I bought another one!
-
If my 2k came out like that, I wouldnt touch it again, great paint finish!
-
Andre, I had a blue version of this kit in the 80's, it was my first ever car kit, and my second ever plastic kit... And I still have it! Yours is looking great!
-
And this is where I am now. 2 remaining points - the seat belt hanger I added is conflicting with the glazing, I'm going to heat it and bend it in, or cut it off and put a spacer in And the tail light is yet to be done... this will be my lock down build - hopefully complete within 1 week - the quickest I've ever completed a build - by far!

Thanks Alex, I think this is the route i'll take Thanks Fabrizio! Thanks Kurt, I will definately try the tape method on a future build, I'd never have thought of it, great tip! Good suggestion on the Smoke Matthijs, I will be doing that too, but i'll still hand paint the colour, and mask/AB the black... unfortunately I've snapped the tail light peice whilst painting it... Doh! The clear plastic is so much more brittle than the coloured stuff...

Looks like a cool kit -
yeah, I/m not so keen on 1:20 either - nothing wrong with the scale, but it would be the only car I'd have at that scale & wouldn't fit in anywhere! And they are now pricey...
