76-77 LeMans Enforcer 0r Smokey & Bandit Sheriff Justice Car
ChrisBcritter replied to DEL's topic in WIP: Model Cars
My best guess so far would be to take a Lincoln Futura wheelcover, smooth down the center so it isn't "stepped" and blends into the base, and then fit it into a rim so the angled edge can be cut. Then you'll need a drill press with three sizes of fine bits...- 115 replies

Been there done that too, on a '64 promo vert I restored and the '64 Coupe deVille I'm working on now. I drilled a hole in the broken-off area with (IIRC) a #72 bit, did the same on a larger chunk of plastic, inserted a short piece of a straight pin with a drop of CA on each end and stuck them together with a dab of liquid cement to weld it, then carved the tip down to match. Turned out pretty nice. Trivia tidbit: The '70 Caddy (promo and kit) is the only Jo-Han Coupe deVille that isn't missing the word "Coupe" in the quarter panel script; '63-'69 all only have "deVille". Tom P. made a rubber mold from his '70 kit so I could cast up a couple sets with UV resin for my '64.

Well, I chickened out - after the purple pond got the orange paint and primer off, there was residue of the AMT finish left that I ended up scrubbing off with 91% iso alcohol. Once I did that, the plastic was so clean and shiny that I decided to quit while I was ahead! If nothing more, at least now we know AMT must have used some kind of tinted clear metallic lacquer on their promos. Once I get the missing hood ornament and taillight replaced I'll post a photo. In the meantime I'll try the pearl on something else...

Good finds! How much were they discounted for the going-out-of-business sale?

Happy Ford/Chevy Day!

Here's a kicker: From 1955, in Selma, NC, a dealer that sold new Fords and Chevys together in the same showroom: -
How to handle Chrome headlights lenses?
ChrisBcritter replied to foxbat426's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
John, this is a longshot, but check your chrome parts in that kit and see if they are molded in clear plastic under the chrome. I have a Lindberg 1/32 Granada and many of its chrome parts have faded to reveal clear plastic underneath! If so, strip off the chrome from the lenses and you're all set. -
Problems at Heller

Really wanted to try that Estafette as a "fish-out-of-water" US version. Hope it gets into production somewhere. -
Note the '56 Ford wheelcovers - must be 15" wheels. Did the owner switch them because it's not easy to get 14" tires in the proper height/width?

Snake, that's what I was wondering about - how the finish was done by AMT and if a clear pearl over the aqua plastic would duplicate the original look. I've got '64 Cadillac and '65 Chevy promos in metallic brown, and their finishes have a gold tint to the 'flake, but the aqua promos look more like silver tint. Guess my point is, would the clear pearl give it a metallic aqua look or is there a better way? I've never used it before. Mark, no worries about collector value - this is a keeper.

I recently got an aqua '65 Continental promo that had been repainted orange. Several days in the purple pond took care of that, but it also removed the metallic finish the car originally had. What's a good way to bring it back? I was thinking of giving it a coat of Tamiya clear pearl; any other ideas? Thanks!

Boxes for 1/25 collection
ChrisBcritter replied to mikemich's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Check your local liquor store for wine bottle boxes with dividers; they worked well for me in an 1800-mile move. I put each car in a sealable plastic bag in case anything fell off. -

If that's an original issue, wouldn't it have the old whitewall Firestone Supremes? Those are the later issue taller blackwall Firestones.

What kind of car is this

Here's the car that's supposed to be the Cresta/Velox's strongest influence: the 1954 Pontiac Strato Streak concept. -

Had a great time there with Tom and Kevin despite the weather. Let's see some of everyone's photos!

Just got back from the NNL meet in Siberia Waukesha with Tom Piagari and Kevin Pratscher; the weather curtailed a lot of activity at the swap meet. About a third of the vendors didn't show up due to the massive sleet and snow storm, but I still picked up a few goodies very cheap: a started '65 Grand Prix; an aqua '65 Continental sedan promo that had been repainted orange with taxi markings, a Revell reissue Austin Healey opened but bagged inside, and a thoroughly gluebombed '57 T-bird that had a good custom no-scoop hood (the vendor who sold me the Healey threw it in for free). The Grand Prix will be a roof and glass donor for my '65 Olds Jetstar I project, and the Continental will be stripped and cleaned up to represent the aqua promo I had some 50-odd years ago. Hope everyone else who went to the show made it home safely!

1/25 AMT '62 Pontiac Catalina Polyglas Gasser II
ChrisBcritter replied to Casey's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
A challenge for those doing aftermarket 3-D printing: How about a set of full wheel covers for the '62? Neither this kit nor the original Bonneville issued in '62 has ever had them: (image from eBay listing) Note how the concentric rings and three triangles are only stamped in the outer part, but are reflected in the smooth center - neat trick by the stylist. -
Lumpy's 40 Ford
ChrisBcritter replied to cobraman's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Wally's convertible was a rare '53 Chevy 210 with fake patina; the car was actually pale green (you can see glossy paint under the patina in some shots) and showed up in several other productions made at Universal. From IMCDb:
