Monogram 1970 Challenger T/A Rebuild-Under Glass 03-13
mustang1989 replied to mustang1989's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Well I’ll start by saying that this build has totally changed direction from what it started out as. When I started this thing back in the first part of November I thought I was going to simply paint a replacement hood , replace a missing rear spoiler, replace a missing master cylinder and touch up here and there and it all be a done deal by Christmas time. I can tell you now here on the 13th of January that………did NOT happen!!! This build / rebuild has taken me down a road that I have never been down and encountering issues I’ve never dealt with in the world of modeling. So far I’ve met a lot of good people along the way and have developed not only new skill sets but have gained some friends along the way. I still have a couple of months to go with this and am looking forward to getting to know folks on this site better and hopefully contribute something back in return for the friendly help that I’ve gotten so far. In short it’s just a word of gratitude to all who have helped me out along the way here and to halfway explain myself as to the turn of direction with this build from what started out as a “touch-up” to a full blown re-construction event. You guys are da bomb, Joe -

Thank you Dan! Will be working in the engine compartment again today. Hope to get this wrapped up at some point so I can move on. lol Well I spent an hour this morning spinning my wheels. It was my first time simulating washer fluid in the w/s washer reservoir. I do have the concept down and while I'm not striving for the unreachable goal of perfection, I am striving for the "acceptable" range. I'll have to start over with it as I spent more time trying to repair it than I did just scrapping the "progress" and starting over. Will be stripping it off tomorrow morning and hopefully give it another whirl Thursday. Dangit! -

Lookin good Tom! You know I once thought of building 3+ kits at one time................and then I woke up! Whew! That was a close one! My hat goes off to you for being able to not only build 6 of these things at one time but being able to keep everything organized and straight enough to do carry this all out. You da man!!! -
LOL !!!!! I'm having a hard time believing that .

Ok there's not much of an update for today other than the fact that I've got some stenciling on the voltage regulator and I have the horn painted and have the wiring mostly completed for it. First the voltage regulator. Now the stenciling that's there is NOT correct but to the casual onlooker it will blend with the rest of the detail in the engine compartment. I managed to take some 1/48 scale stencils that I had from an Eduard F6F Hellcat kit I had and break it up, then applied it and and a coat of Microsol and clear coated it to make it look more "printed on". I'll end up routing the electrical leads under the existing wire harness at the rear of the engine that I already have in place.. The horn electrical leads/ harness is completed and painted. Looks like the super glue coating did it's desired effect with what looks like wires shrouded by tape/ wrapping with the two leads visible just before the horn. I may go over the electrical "wrapping" with a coat of semi-gloss clear. Now hopefully I can move on to more tangible progress with this build for cryin' out loud! lol -
You couldn't be any more on target than with this statement right there Daniel. I do a lot of Luftwaffe stuff and what's correct in one color reference manual is totally off base from what another one says. In the end it is in fact largely about the "best guess" I have found. A person can drive themselves crazy trying to find the "correct" shade of paints to use. You have a great build in the works so far Jeremy so keep up the good work man!

Thanks Doug and Jeremy! There were two different snake motif's applied on these birds and the color has been a mystery. Some say it's red and others say tan. I personally think the red is a more "in your face" and sinister look but the tan looks evil as well. The only known documented pics I can find out of my references(and I think the only ones that are available): A drawing of the tan setup: and my decal sheet with the red setup:

No I'm not...........I've got it under control................I don't have a problem! Ok ok......................My name is Joe and I'm a plastiholic!!! lol Thanks Tom! -
You can go MM Zinc Chromate but like Rich said you gotta watch tha brightness. Prime the cockpit area a black color first and then spray the Zinc Chromate in layers until you get the shade you want. Or you could shoot the MM Zinc Chromate and apply light coats of dark wash until you get the shade you want. With either method its 6 in one 1/2 a dozen in the other. No worries on the pressure. I just enjoy watching WWII warbird builds that's all.

Thanks Jeremy. Believe me.....a lot of times I'm surprised myself. lol Funny you should ask that Pat. If you work on or are around cars much , you have a stockpile of this stuff. I have a stash of fuel pump relays from the GM dealership days laying around. I crack 'em open and walah! You have a whole mini roll of it: I had used it in making the spark plug wires for my Bandai 1/48 BMW R75 build not too long ago. This was a good build but I recently acquired the Tamiya 1/48 version that has truer to scale wheel spokes (the wheel spokes and that "up armored" rear licence plate holder were my only regret about this build looking back-but then again , hindsight is 20/20 when your looking back....lol ). The whole thing is just under 2" long.......... -

Well you said............ It doesn't look like much yet but I've got a method here. Although you can't see it these wires are fused together by a bead of superglue. My aim is that once I paint all this up that 1.) The wires will have more of a "taped together" or fused "look" and 2.) hide the minor boo-boo caused by the super glue run-off at the horn. Most of this morning was spent in research and mapping out how I'm going to pull this off . I drilled a hole in the firewall just to the right side of the brake booster where the electrical harness breakout is. I'm going really slow with all of this so I only have to attempt this electrical harness thing once. I don't know how detailed I'll get with it but we'll see how it goes................ -

I spent some time in the engine bay this morning masking off the washer fluid bottle and painting that up. Still have a little work to do to that before I post anything on that though. I did, however, start working on that horn. As mentioned earlier I robbed a horn from a Mustang kit I had and was going to use it but I just couldn't bring myself to use it as it was................... So I cut the molded in mount off of it and cut a strip of spare PE I had then super glued it in place on the horn: and painted the whole assy. Waiting for the paint to dry now.......... It's not exactly like the real thing but it's a helluva lot closer than it was that's for sure! lol -
Now that's some good modeling right there Sonny!!
