Some interesting VW Bugs
russosborne replied to bobthehobbyguy's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I like that yellow one that Jon posted. It isn't exactly what I would want to have, that wing and the ride height for sure need work, but it is a good start. I keep saying after the couple of cars I am working on I am done with car projects, but I have always wanted to do a Bug. Russ -
Estate Planning - all those models in the basement
russosborne replied to <profile removed>'s topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
I don't have kids. Well, one stepson, but he was an adult already before I entered the picture. Neither he nor any of my couple of dozen nephews/neices/grand nephews/neices have any interest in models. Doesn't really bother me. I've sold most of my stash a couple of times in the past when I really needed money. Got it building back up again. but probably less than 100 kits. I honestly don't care what my wife does with it. At most at $5 a kit she would get maybe $500. There is a non car kit that is worth well over $100 on Ebay. That one I will tell her not to give away, but the others if she could find a kid that wants them she can give them to that kid. That kit is actually a large scale model of the aircraft carrier my grandfather served on in WWII. That stays in the family if I can help it. Or toss them, or Goodwill, or sell them, whatever works for her. Once I am dead I don't care about any of the stuff that happens on this planet. If I get to the point where I realize that I am not physically able to do this stuff anymore, I will try to get rid of them myself. Again, probably not for money, at least not much. Maybe call a local kit buyer if he is still around (he's older than me), but I'd rather give them away to someone who wants them. I did that with a bunch of kits back in Akron about 8-9 years ago. Someone put an ad on CL looking for a couple of kits for their son. I ended up giving them a couple of boxes, plus some newer (other) magazines, some supplies, and tried to let them know to just let the kid have fun and don't worry about perfection. Hope he had fun with them. Maybe he is still building. Russ -
What non-auto model did you get today?
russosborne replied to chunkypeanutbutter's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
Got a Hobby Lobby gift certificate (among other things) from my parents. Went there today. Somebody is still buying models. The shelves were pretty empty. I couldn't find a car model I really wanted, so I finally bought the AMT Star Trek original series Enterprise I have been wanting since it came out again. Still doesn't have the red lights in the nacelles like the original one I had in what, 68 or so, but same otherwise. It's the one in the fancy outer box that talks about the 50th anniversary, but has the old model box inside. $24.64 out the door after the 40% off coupon. BTW the 20%off sale is over. Yay! So I still have enough on the gift card to buy a car model once they restock. Of course, this is just going to be stuck in the stash with all the others waiting for that "someday when I feel like building again" to arrive. Thanks, Russ -
A very nice idea for a kit
russosborne replied to aurfalien's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Well, it certainly speaks to my inner 10 year old. My inner 10 year old says "yuck". My 10 year old inner self doesn't use the sorts of words that I would say about it. Not for me at all, either in real life or as a model, but I am sure some will love it. Russ -
I'll probably have to get the pickup with the go kart. Probably the only way I will ever own a go kart at this point in my life. I could buy a real one, but couldn't fit in it, or even get in or out of it anymore. The 32 is probable. Russ

This, only almost immediately in my case. No interest from me on the stock versions, or the Power Wagon. I would actually be in for all the ones that kitswapper posted, realizing that it would probably never happen. Russ

Two complaints in one post. Short version. Ebay seller idiot. Craigslist buyer idiot. Long version. I just recently got back into the world of RCA Selectivision players/discs. Short lived product from the mid 80's. Competitor to the Laser Disc. Had one back then, kept the movies until our move to Ohio 12 years ago. Been casually looking at thrift stores in case one showed up, finally found one on Offer Up. Anyway, found an Ebay auction for 3 movies. Only one of which I really wanted, but for the price of about $11plus shipping I figure it is worth it just for the one movie that usually sells for that much alone, the other two are freebies. Do the Buy It Now, and the next day I get a notice from Paypal that the seller has refunded me one third of the buy it now price. But nothing from the seller as to why the refund. I am thinking probably not getting all 3 movies. Get the package today. Feels a little light, so I am figuring I was right. Open it up, and the 2 crappy movies are there, but not the one I wanted. Now, all the seller would have had to do was ask me if I wanted just the 2 movies with the discount, or my money back. I would have answered "my money back" in this case and gone on and bought just that movie from another source and been totally happy. But no, seems he (based on the user name) can't be bothered. So I leave as nasty a feedback as I have ever done on Ebay. And now I have to decide if $15 or so is worth the bother of repacking these things and going to the post office or not. I haven't set up my new to me player yet, but was going to do that tonight so I could enjoy the movie. That is probably what POs me the most. Btw, the movie is a concert, Paul McCartney and Wings Rockshow from 1976 I think. And on a different page, I am trying to sell something on Craigslist. I clearly list that I would consider a trade for any of the following items. Well, someone emailed me asking how much I want for one of those items. I politely tell him that it is something I don't have but want to trade for. So he responds by sending me a copy of my ad, showing his lack of reading comprehension skills.

What Did You Get Today? (Not Model Related)
russosborne replied to LOBBS's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
Got an RCA Video Disc player from the mid 80's and 80 movies for $60. At the time they were a competitor to the Laser Disc system, but at a lower cost. Really good picture for the time. I had one that I just loved. Eventually wore out and I didn't have the money to replace it (was in the early 90's, and they weren't being made anymore anyway). Held onto my discs until we moved to Ohio in 2006. Always regretted that, and have been looking in thrift stores. Some movies, but hadn't seen a player in over a decade. Found this deal on Offer Up. It had been listed for a year, but I asked if they still had it and they did. This one isn't as nice as the one I had, I think this is the very first model. No stereo, and no RCA out connectors. Just coax. But I am not complaining. I do need to start looking for a needle/cartridge for it, which may be literally like looking for a needle in a haystack. This one works, but supposedly skips once in a while, which is a symptom of the needle going. I used to be really into these things. My wife thinks I am nuts (ok she already did), and logically I agree with her. A dvd or better yet blu-ray is really the better way to go now, but for me this is a nostalgia thing, just like models. Even with having to stop the movie at the half way point to flip the disc over. To me that is part of the charm. Now I am seriously on the hunt for the movies I used to have, some of which still aren't available on anything else, at least not in the form they were on these discs. Oh, a huge surprise. Most of the movies I got I don't care about, but I figure I bought the machine for $60 and the movies were free. But the surprise one is Star Wars, the 1977 release. This is the original version, before George decided to add stuff that he couldn't do back then. Can't seem to find any of the original version anymore unless you get lucky and find one used. I got LUCKY! (yes, I am not a fan of the redone versions) Thanks, Russ -
Post retirement modeling
russosborne replied to misterNNL's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I'm 59. Probably many years before retirement as I don't think we could live on SS alone. Wife is on disability for another year I think then she gets moved to SS.Trying to max out the 401k stuff since I had to start over again from nothing after essentially being unemployed most of 4 years. Hoping that whenever I do, my output increases. It certainly can't get any worse than zero a year. Lots of partial builds though. I've already seen a major decrease in what I can do physically. So currently I am trying to force my body to get my 1:1 79 Pinto done, and then my 72 Ranchero, as in a couple more years I may not be able to do mechanical stuff at all. Hands are still good, but stamina and getting up after laying under a car is very bad. I have to plan how I can support myself when getting up before I can get down. And it is usually 10 minutes working, 30 on break. Hoping that I can still build models when I get a few more years older. Russ -
86.3% = A? boy, standards are really dropping. Russ

Revell Greased Lightning '48 Ford 'Vert
russosborne replied to stavanzer's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
My wife saw this kit at Hobby Lobby when I was in the model section. Now I need to buy and build it. She won't care about anything else as long as it looks like the movie car. She normally has zero interest in models, so I have to do this one. Russ -
Is that 34 Ford Truck the old Lindberg/older AMT kit? I've got 3 of the Lindberg versions, one to build each of the box top versions. Now I have to get more when these come out. Thanks, Russ

The Pinto forum I am on is back up. Was starting to go through some serious withdrawals. Russ

The Pinto site I am on has been down for a week. Something about using too much of the provider's resources so they shut it down. Site owner is trying to get something worked out, but I am going thru serious withdrawals. Russ

Favorite gasser kits?
russosborne replied to Jantrix's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
For me, the Revell SWC Willys and the Monogram 55 Chevy Badman are my absolute favorites, the Badman being one of my top 5 all time favorites of any style. But give me any of the Willys versions, or really any gasser style kit and I am happy. Russ -
Now I think this is silly
russosborne replied to Greg Myers's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Cool. There is just something about that era of race cars that I can't resist. That car definitely wasn't built for gas mileage. But cool to see it still exists, although not in great shape. Thanks, Russ -

Hmm, I'm thinking 1960 or so Chevy something. I'd really like to see what is under the tarp, though. Russ -
That's one of the big things I miss about Ohio. But then in another month or two you will be smothered in that white evil stuff. Loved seeing it outside the window, hated driving in it every day to work. Russ

If you are interested, he is still doing his show, but now it is online and you have to pay (not much) if you want to listen. I pay about $14 a month I think. Best part is there are lots and lots of old shows available to listen to. You get like 4 shows a week with the monthly subscription. https://www.drdemento.com/ Russ

What Did You Get Today? (Not Model Related)
russosborne replied to LOBBS's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
No pictures, and not all today, but all this in the last 3 weeks or so. All for my 79 Pinto. Tubular lower control arms. I already have the uppers I bought at a swap meet a couple years ago. Both use screw in ball joints. KYB gas a just shocks for the front. Car already has them, but they are over 20 years old. Figured might as well get new ones. 2 inch dropped spindles. I already have stock height new ones, so I can go either way. But want the 2 inch drop if at all possible. Struts for the glass hatch. That thing is heavy to hold up. Poly bushings for the rack and pinion mounts. Waiting on-ordered but not yet received= 11 inch front disk brake kit that also converts to the 5x4.5 lug pattern. Replacement stock Moog front coils. Bunch of little stuff. The front suspension and brakes will be brand new when I am done. As well as the rear, but I am doing one end at a time. Speedway and Summit and Rock Auto are loving me. Got two swap meets coming up, one a monthly local one, and then the Goodguys one in mid November. Working tons of overtime to pay for all this fun. Thanks, Russ
