1969 Nova F/SA NHRA Stock Eliminator
Straightliner59 replied to R. Thorne's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
That'll work! I usually start with an 80 grit nail sanding board, then work my way down through the grits, with those, until I get through the polishing board. That provides a nice surface for the decals. Then, I overcoat them, usually with semi-gloss. Like you said, we live and learn! -

I would think a pound would last several modelers a lifetime! I still have some in one of those "butter tubs" I bought back in the '80s. I don't think that thing weighed more than a few grams, then. I don't do a lot of serious bodywork, either, though. -
I just remembered that Tom and I are friends on Facebook. He posted something 12 hours ago, so, he's still on the right side of the sod!?

My take on the most famous ‘55 gasser street machine’…

That's a great idea! I've used pink erasers, before, but, the brayer may be even better! -

Tom was in my old StraightLineModeler e-group! He is an excellent builder. Sorry to sidetrack your thread, Jim.

1/16th Scale Top Fuel Dragster Eddie Hill 4:99
Straightliner59 replied to Ian McLaren's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
Yes, Eddie and Ercie were great, out on the tour! I was at the Mile High Nationals, shortly after his comeback to top fuel, when he was running The Texan car, and runnered-up to Larry Minor (I think). If I remember correctly, Minor waited, but they couldn't get Hill's car to fire, and Minor singled for the win--that whole place was loving them, that day! I was also there, the day he and Clayton (his last name's escaping me) both fireballed almost simultaneously, in the first round. It was right in front of me. Man, that was hot! There was a piece of melted slick, fused around a wire that crossed above the track for several years, after that.- 78 replies

Well, you should be, sir!

Thankfully, both of my machines are Sherline! I'd never have room for a Bridgeport! I have gotten to where I keep a line of the tools I use most frequently, lying out on the bench. The pin vise, there has a 1/8" collet, that I use for the carbide bits--I have a ton of those, as well, both carbide and regular carbon-steel bits. I started accumulating tools, mostly because I just wanted to try something out. Oh, well. I love this hobby, and there's nothing wrong with feeding your passion, because it's good for your spirit!

They're all over Ebay. AK Interactive even markets them as snow. https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p4432023.m570.l1311&_nkw=microballoons&_sacat=0 -
I appreciate that, Ian. I thought that would be the case, but when I was looking at different systems, via Google, some of them had the braided lines. I surmise, now, that they were street systems, because hard lines only make sense. It would be no more or less difficult to install one over the other, anyway! I have plenty of wire. Now, I just need to find some photos of their installation. Thanks again, for your insight.

I keep my Evergreen, Plastruct and K&S stock in that bin. I got it, when I was working in a hobby shop. It's just made from .080" styrene sheet (likely manufactured by Evergreen, since it's one of their bins.). I have a pair of old steel 8-drawer cabinets that I keep wire and lathe and mill stock in. I might be something of a scratchbuilding materials hoarder!? And tools. I seem to have accumulated a lot of those, over the years, too. I think I have a dozen different pin vises. I should probably have therapy!?

I don't think that's bad, at all! Evergreen! Plastruct! K&S! Random stock, bought here and there, off the interwebs--you can never have too much, or too many scratchbuilding supplies. This was two years ago. It's gotten fuller, since.?

I finally got all the borders done. I'm looking forward to getting some clear on it, and smoothing it out. The gold paint really has the reflective qualities of gold leaf, although lightly grainy, which leaf is not--and, now I'm really mad at myself--I just realized that I have everything I need to have done it with actual gold leaf! D'OH!? I've been wanting to use it on a project, too. I really like the gold, and I'm happy with the overall scheme. It's pretty eye-catching, I think! I want to incorporate some art into the cowl panel, but haven't decided on it, yet--just a couple of general ideas. Thanks for looking!

A couple of hours ago, a very nice, unbuilt, complete Johan Shirley Shahan AMX went up on Ebay for $65 OBO. I made sure that baby didn't stay there for long!

Who doesn't love a mock-up? Let's see yours!
Straightliner59 replied to Belairconvertable's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Inspired by @CabDriver's T-Bucket, I decided I wanted one, too! Last week, when I was frustrated and discouraged by the paint on the cowl of my dragster, I started scrounging through my parts, and came up with enough to do this. The seat is sanded down from a Model a tub. The floor will be wood. It'll sit a tad higher, in back (but, not much!). I'm not 100% on the wheels, yet, but not dead-set against them, either. Flattie is the venerable Monogram V-8 with tri-carbs. I'll remove the molded-in manifolds, and replace them with headers. It won't be a rat, but it will wear a matte finish. -

Straightliner59 replied to OldNYJim's topic in WIP: Model Cars
I love that you are doing this! It's something I've been attempting/doing for many years, now--I'm still nowhere near as good as I'd like to be. In fact, I'm pretty lousy, at it! But, t's interested me since I first attended some IPMS meeting and shows, back in the early '80s, and seeing it on armor and aircraft models, and on figures. Later on, in Russ Schwenkler's work. Russ was using it overall, but, it was in his interiors, that it really caught my eye. I would contend that it adds a lot of visual interest, when it's done properly. Excellent work, with the body, Jim! I'm diggin' the chassis work, too!
