What would mean more to you
mikemodeler replied to martinfan5's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Well, I don't take my models to shows so I guess I would never get an award or be in a magazine! I tend to build for my own satisifaction and while I think I build a decent model, I am too critical of my work to take it to a show and let others judge it. In the end, I enjoy this hobby and have never felt the need to build contest winning models or seek fame and recognition. -
1/25 Ford C-600 Stake truck

There is a product called dullcote that can be sprayed on a shiny surface to make it appear dull or less shiny. There are typically 4 levels of clear one can spray on a surface: 1. High Gloss- for the shiniest of finishes, mainly on show cars 2. Gloss- for a shiny surface finish, usually used to replicate a factory paint job. 3. Semi-gloss- for those parts that typically have a little shine to them, like chassis parts, underhood, etc. 4. Flat or dullcote- these are parts that have no shine to them. Hope this helps! -
Hobby Lobby up to 65% off
mikemodeler replied to hooterville75's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Same boat here Nick, except I almost always scan the shelves 3 times "just to make sure"! The other day it was the recently reissued AMT '69 442 Hurst Olds. I have the kit from the previous issue but not in the Hurst Olds package and after watching an episode of Chasing Cars, I saw my inspiration! -
This should be interesting as it was a stripped down Nova and the last issue of this kit was a SS396 , if I remember correctly. Doesn't matter, I have plenty of the Revell Novas as well as a couple of the AMTs.

There are some resin kits out there too, I will have to do some digging to get the names listed.

Josh, Is this friend local to South Carolina? Is his stuff available at local shows? I ask because I like to see before I buy and hope that I might see him at show near here soon as I like his stuff! Thanks

Hobby Lobby up to 65% off
mikemodeler replied to hooterville75's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Which is great for us consumers until the person in front of you REALLY wants that picture frame but somehow managed to get the last one and the price tag is missing, resulting in a long wait at the only open register! If they ever go to scanning barcodes, it will mean the end of great deals as I have lucked out a few times with current kits having clearance tags and getting them for 50% off, sometimes more! -
1967 chevy shortbed

Sure would be nice to have a new kit of that series GM Pickups, much like Mobeius is doing with the 67-72 Fords! Nice job! -

Why, isn't he the king of rust and weathering???????? Nice job on this build, I would suggest some more dullcote on those fuel tanks, still too shiny! -
Might be a little early to determine those answers Charlie, although I understand your reasoning. My hope is that all made it thru the storm unscathed and the show will go on, although seeing the pictures on TV, I can only imagine the devastation in person.

2012 Contest Cars Mag

Contact Golden Bell Press (the publisher of MCM) and order this issue and any other back issues that you want from them directly. Phone : 877-463-3127 -
Take care and be safe to all of those in the path of the storm. Here in Charlotte NC we are getting high winds and cold temps but no rain. I hope that whatever predictions of destruction the talking heads on TV claim are exaggerated and no members here suffer any losses. A little concerned for my son who is at school in Vermont as that area took a beating with Irene last August and this looks to be as bad, if not worse.

Thanks for the pictures! I always have a work assignment that takes me out of Charlotte the last weekend of October so I have yet to attend this show and these pictures have me resenting my job! I really like that black 32 5 window you posted Drew, and that early 50's red GMC pickup in the background of that black '27(?) is pretty sweet too.

Kenny is a great guy and a great model builder. Earlier this year he was moving his business ( he has a day job like most of us!) and that may have been why he was hard to get a hold of. He is also heavily involved with the CKM model club and they put on a great show every August ( highly recommend attending it if you can). That said, his resin is top notch and priced fair, have yet to have any bad pieces or issues. If you can't get through via email, use Casey's link above as he is a member here. If you get a chance to meet him at a show, he is very nice and easy to talk to.

I wanna get back into building...
mikemodeler replied to '08SEAL's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Not to mention the most "fresh" BMF there is. You can sometimes get a sheet that has been left out and has dried/cracked, not good for modeling or the pocketbook. -
wondering what happened after you bagged all those Gearz prizes! Glad to see you back at it, this should be as nice or nicer than the 69 Z-28!

That looks like something out of Chuck Most's backyard! Nice job on the weathering! -
Thanks Art, now I gotta tell my youngest that she won't be going to college because some model kit company is bringing out a bunch of different versions of a model kit that I have waited 40 years for!!!!! Actually, that is great news as I , like many others, have multiple builds milling about in my head. I sure hope they do give us some variations of this kit and at some point a 4wd version! I can see this truck with the Midnite Cowboy wrecker bed, a Modelhaus utility bed, a scratchbuilt flatbed, a step side bed, maybe even a scratchbuilt dump bed! If I can, I will even incorporate the snow plow from the new Revell GMC kit!

C-600 Dump truck
mikemodeler replied to Mach1revo's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
That is a beauty! Nice details and weathering. -
That is the big difference. If you already have an account with a local parts store, chances are you are getting a better deal than what you can on the internet. Places like Rock Auto have a single location and deal strictly via the internet and therefore can price against other online prices. All of the major parts retailers (NAPA, Auto Zone, Advance, O'Reilly) have an online price, a walk in price and a shop price. Usually the retailers will price match legit prices, so don't be afraid to ask. Like our hobby, the auto parts business has seen the internet as a tool and a weapon and the smart players have figured out how to use social media and the internet to their advantage. Just remember two important things: 1. Buyer beware 2. You get what you pay for.

Model Express closing
mikemodeler replied to imarriedawitch's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Might want to double check that Andy, the thread starter, Scott Fordham, posted the message from the Model Express website, and at the bottom of the message Dennis signed it. I agree that another hobby outlet closing is not good, especially when they have built a reputation as being a great place to do business with.
