"DIGGER"
Snake45 replied to TooOld's topic in WIP: All The Rest: Motorcycles, Aviation, Military, Sci-Fi, Figures
To be honest, I'm not a fan of these things, but that said, this is absolutely THE BEST build of one I've ever seen. Well done! Couple years ago I got a Freddy Flameout and was hoping to do something equally nice with it, but I've decided there's just no way to work with the kit head. After looking a while, I came up with a toy Halloween skeleton that has a skull that should look good in the helmet, so I'll be going a slightly different way with it. I really should build that thing sometime. -
I've referred to them as "used bars of soap." However, I HAVE seen an improvement in colors in the last two years or so. It started five or six years ago with metallic reds and maroons showing up, followed by some very attractive metallic burnt orange/brick red tones. Blues started reappearing a couple years ago, and even a few greens, and now it's a rare day that I don't see at least one newer car with an attractive shade of metallic brown on it. Bright orange is pretty rare but not unseen, but yellow and gold don't seem to have come back around yet. Yellow (pale/light yellow, anyway) and gold were both very common car colors back in the '60s, but I can't remember the last time I saw a new one in those shades.

"Bring Out Your Dead" Completion Build--ROUND 2 Is On!
Snake45 replied to Snake45's topic in WIP: Model Cars
No problem, old friend, SMcM took care of me and I'm good. Might have to pick up one of those new reissue Rivs just for the wheels--and the box. That's the box my original one was in. Making steady progress. Got the paint on last weekend and will spend this week color-sanding and polishing it out. Also found some green paint that's a near-perfect match for the old Pactra Leaf Green in the interior, for some much-needed touchup. No progress pics at this time, you'll just have to take my word for it. Have also about 95% decided on the paint for the '66 Chevelle. Was going to experiment on it and try a dark brown pearl nail polish, or perhaps a bronze craft acrylic, but time is running out and I don't have time to experiment, or risk a disaster, strip, and repaint. So I think I'll be going with Testor Root Beer, which I just found a new can of in the Snakepit last week. It looks very close to what I've had in mind in color for the thing from the beginning. -

Now THAT would have been a cool Batmobile! -
Well played, old friend.

Shirley Shahan’s Experimental Hurst/AMX

I think all the Hurst-built cars had charcoal gray interiors. At least the restored one that I based my own build on did, so that's how I did mine. -
For those of you looking for one of these, I just came across an odd listing on ePay. Guy's talking about "2 of the 4 tape strips are intact," but it's not factory tape, so who cares? "As far as I can tell, all the parts are inside." How could he possibly know? If you want one, might be worth dropping this guy a line and asking him to open up the box and look inside Might or might not be a Javelin model in there. A mystery! https://www.ebay.com/itm/AMX-Javelin-Trans-Am-Road-Racer-Model-Kit-Geo-Follmers-Racer/183842088153?hash=item2acdd7a4d9:g:WlMAAOSw9ylc~UvX DISCLAIMER: I have no connection with or knowledge of this seller or deal.

Go for it! You might even want to polish out that cool blue plastic. Drive on!

Since it's not in perfect or near-perfect condition, it doesn't have all that much "value" as a promo. Upgrade it to your heart's content and display it proudly!

Shirley Shahan’s Experimental Hurst/AMX
Snake45 replied to dragmodels44's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
I believe the Hurst AMXs were set up to run in NHRA SS/E. But I seem to recall that also in 1969, AHRA was running an SS/E class that was Super Stock Experimental for the run-whatcha-brungers and match racers like Jenkins, Sox, Landy, Nicholson, et al, who were blazing the trail for 1970's Pro Stock. Maybe that's what this is? -
No more calls, please, we have a winner! Looks like Duco cement or something of the kind was used to assemble it, which didn't bite into the plastic at all. The putty pretty much dissolved in the purple bath. There's been no cutting or sanding on the body at all. It's VERY clean and restorable.

This funky '62 Corvair emerged from its week-long Purple Swim today and you would NOT BELIEVE what was hiding under all that 55 year-old hand-brushed Testor PLA red paint and Testor (or AMT) putty!

That looks just BADASS! Drive on!

I have one in an AMT box, so AMT released it, too.

But then you have to make your interiors REALLY nice. Besides, to me, half the beauty of a car is its roofline. I build very, very few convertibles--and most of those are Corvettes with the removable hard tops in place.

Not sure much would show up in photos. Most of the problem is in things like minor but annoying sinkholes, uneven/unstraight lines, wavy surfaces, and so forth. The basic shape is still in there but you have to liberate it--when I built mine, I had something like 40 hours in filling, straightening, and block-sanding the body.

Very nice! I've been wanting to build something in this vein for many years now. Maybe I"ll actually get to it someday.

They're cheap now. I just had to get one at work. Got a nice little Kodak with macro for about $75. It gets up closer, takes better pictures, saves them faster, and saves more of them than my personal Olympus I've been using for 15 years and paid around $200 for.

Great survivior, and great story! It cleaned up nicely. They're only original once.
