That's basically what I did on the Shark I just restored. And then I glued the whole mess onto the main body.

Very nice! Maybe the best rendition of this car I've ever seen. Well done and model on!

Great color! What is that paint?

I sliced the back off the roof and moved it back about 1/8" or something. These two pics will show what I did with the top line of the quarters. Next move is to correct the lower rear quarters, behind the wheels. This is as far as I got with it in 2010 before I lost interest.

"Bring Out Your Dead" Completion Build--ROUND 2 Is On!
Snake45 replied to Snake45's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Fabulous! You're completion #8, and I only have a few more things to glue on my '40 Ford and it will be #9! Tomorrow midnight's the deadline. Anyone else gonna GITTER DONE? -
Before the "new" Cuda appeared, I was working on correcting their second issue AAR and I think it was looking better than the new one. I"ll buy the new kit just for the hood and the decals, as the second-issue kit decals won't fit my altered body as I substantially changed the height/contours of the rear fenders.
-
The former would be my theory. I've covered red plastic just fine with cheap Walmart Gray primer, followed by Walmart White primer. No "bleed" at all, no tinting. But the stuff is getting hard to find. My store doesn't carry either color anymore, only black, and availability on the Walmart website is spotty--you just have to keep checking until they have it. I brush painted these Monkeemobile seats, molded in red, with Testor white in 1967. Last year when I restored it, I didn't strip them, but I DID go all around the glued joints with file and sandpaper to get rid of the seams. Then I hit them with just two coats of Walmart White Primer (no other primer under that). See any red bleed through around the rim of the backs? Me neither.

What cars interest you in resin 1/25
Snake45 replied to 5.0man's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
If you meant MCW (Model Car World), I just got a '63 2DS body from them for the Trumpeter kit. I saw they offer a '65 2DS body, but the roof changed in '65 and I prefer the '63-63 shape. Moebius is supposed to be coming out with a '65 2DS gasser kit and I'll be buying that, though. -
Steamboat laid the blame in his first line. For years I've asked someone to name me the chemical that will "bleach" the color out of plastic. I've also asked for pictures of a red body that's been painted and stripped and now seems to be less red. To date, no one has met either challenge.

Glad you asked, and thanks! The whole sordid story is told here:

And why wouldn't it be? It's an absolute myth that red pigment somehow "leaches out" of the plastic and into/through paint.

1974 Chevy Corvette......my one and only for '18.
Snake45 replied to MrObsessive's topic in Model Cars
Amazing. My girlfriend of the '80s drove one and I could only just barely get into the passenger seat. I don't remember if I ever actually drove the little beast or not--if I did, it was only once. -
It's in all of them right back to the first issue Mako Shark. I know, I just restored one and ended up making tabs and gluing the hood shut.
-
I see you've put the aluminum L89 heads on both.

INSPIRED THINKING- Cheap Tips for Frugal Modelers

I've done the same thing, but found that wooden strips are seldom perfectly flat and unwarped. I've had better results using Evergreen styrene strips. -
Anyone ever built a 66 Pontiac Station wagon?
Snake45 replied to randyc's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Are you trying to do a factory stock Tempest/Lemans 4-door wagon? If so, I don't think the Chevelle taillights/rear end are going to be "close enough." It might be more interesting to do a GTO phantom 2-door wagon, like the '64-'65 Chevelle 2D wagons. In either case, I think the best way to proceed would be to cut the roof off the Chevelle wagon and try to graft it onto the GTO body. One way or another. This gives you the correct rear fender shape and rear wheel openings, but of course you'll have to rescribe all the door lines except the front of the front one. Then of course you use the complete GTO chassis. Sounds like an ambitious project. Good luck with it. -
I added 18 diecasts to my “Finished/Displayable” list this year. This means I've done my little Snake-Fu detailing and correction tricks and they're as good as they're gonna get. Except for the '65 GTO and '70 Challenger T/A, I acquired all of these this year; most were new, a couple were pre-owned. Two (the '15 Shelby and '12 Mustang) were assembled from kits from Hobby Lobby. Five of these were $9.99 Rite Aid specials. Thanks for looking and as always, comments welcome! Happy New Year! ’65 Riviera: I just discovered that I haven't photographed the pretty blue-gray one I did this year; this is the silver one I did a couple years ago, exact same model with same Snake-Fu mods. Finished March 3. ’15 Shelby GT350: Finished May 19. ’12 Mustang Boss 302: Finished May 37. ’65 GTO: Far and away the most involved project, as I spent a lot of time changing the shape of the roof. WELL worth the time spent IMHO. Finished July 15. ’57 Chev 210: Finished August 12. '55 Mercedes 300SL: Finished August 23. '70 Challenger T/A: My favorite diecast of the year, this one is so good it gets displayed with my “real” models. Finished August 26. '05 Porsche 977 Carrera: Finished September 4. '14 Porsche 918 Spyder: The LEAST effort I put into any diecast this year. All I could find to do was sand the tire treads and hit the rims of the wheels with Silver Sharpie. Finished September 9. '07 Porsche Boxster: Finished September 22. '68 Corvette: A really rough, no-name diecast bought for $2 at the local toy show. I did what I could with it but it's still pretty wretched. Finished September 27. '02 Mazda RX-7: Bought for $5 at local toy show. Had to file a nasty mold line off the side of spoiler and airbrush it red to match. Finished September 28. '05 Corvette: Finished September 29. '07 Shelby GT500: Finished October 12. '68 Olds 4-4-2: Finished October 30. '67 Firebird: If this were true 1/25 instead of 1/24, it would be tied for my favorite diecast of the year. As it is, it's a solid second. Finished November 1. '62 Chevy Impala: Finished November 3. '65 El Camino: Considerable work making the door window frames look halfway decent. Finished November 9.

Snake45 replied to MrObsessive's topic in Model Cars
Bill, if I were you, I would just clean that one up, do any obvious needed repairs or touchups, and leave it alone as a time capsule of your 1988 modeling skills. This is a common and inexpensive kit--start with a new one and build it up to your current standards, and then you can display them together to show how far you've come in 30 years. I've done this in a couple cases and plan to do some more of it. And I have a couple of my original old builds that I stripped and now wish I hadn't. Just something to think about, old friend. -
Obviously a typo. Should be M. BTW, see my sig line below.
