There is a post, I believe on this forum, about converting a jigsaw into a paint shaker. It uses a cheap clamp from Harbor Freight and works quite well. Here is a picture of mine. The jigsaw cost $10 at a pawn shop and the clamp was around $2 at Harbor Freight. When I get the paint bottle clamped in place I will usually run some masking tape around the bottle and the clamp just as insurance.

small zip-lock bags, ~3-4"
TarheelRick replied to fiatboy's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
My wife used to have a really small business selling beads and wires. She used these bags for the beads. She got them from a company called Darice, if you look at the beading section of Hobby Lobby and others similar stored you will see a variety of their products. Of course, they are a wholesaler and do not sell directly to the general public without a business license. -
I think I figured it out: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Tonka-Ford-Ranchero-Blue/322881256887?hash=item4b2d38fdb7:g:flgAAOSw3s1aCjrS

Picked this up at a show a few months back with hopes of using the Revell '70 Torino to build it into a Ranchero. However none of the parts want to fit. Is it possibly a Hubley or a promo?

Autoquiz 348 -Finished
TarheelRick replied to carsntrucks4you's topic in Real or Model? / Auto ID Quiz
Would love to fine one of these in good shape. -
Super nice chop. Going to be one cool rod when she is finished. Just one minor thing I noticed, the doors will not open in this configuration. The top hinge is at an angle to the bottom hinge. Not really sure how to fix it, unless you move the top hinge down to where the door line becomes vertical.

If this is your first attempt since your childhood, I can't wait to see what you do next. Excellent work.

I am retired USAF for almost 30 years now and drive a school bus; keeps me out from under the wife's feet. I drive for the local Middle/High School. One of my students is a special needs child, although rather high functioning. My favorite hat is one stating that I am a USAF retired MSgt. Today this student asked if I had been in the military, then asked if I was a veteran. He then said he could tell by the way I walked and acted. Anyway a little later he tapped me on the shoulder and passed me a note. It basically thanked me for my service to the USA and without what I (we, all veterans) did we would all be dead. This one will definitely go into my keeper folder of all the special things my students have given me. OOPS, didn't mean to attach this post to the one above it.

Scale conversion chart?

I have mounted a Folgers coffee can to the side of my spray booth. I keep it full of wadded up paper towels. When I am changing colors and need to do a quick clean of the airbrush I simply spray cleaner through the brush into the coffee can. The towels absorb the spray and once they become too saturated I simply throw them away and add new paper towels. Also use the Great Value (WalMart brand) drink mix containers for sanding sticks, short pieces of styrene, and any other stuff that fits in them.

How to be competitive at contests.
TarheelRick replied to Jantrix's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
I think what really bugs me most about weathering is those people who will rust out fiberglass panels. I remember a very well weathered 56 Chevrolet Cameo, with the rear fenderwells rusted out. The Cameo had fiberglass sides on a stepside box. I have never tried weathering, I do not have the eye for the subtly of the color variations, but I am going to try it one of these days. -
"Holy Grail" Models?
TarheelRick replied to Billy Kingsley's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Two of my grail kits for many years were the AMT Double Dragster and the 25T Double kit, since their rerelease I have acquired two of each. I guess my grail kits now are an annual 63 Pontiac Bonneville and a 62 Ford Galaxie. There are several promos of the Pontiac on Ebay, but I cannot justify the price, plus I want a kit, haven't seen a 62 Ford hardtop in many years. -

Have to agree with all the above comments. That is one excellent build of an iconic TV personality. My Dad served with Pat Brady in WWII. -
Testors Model Master paint
TarheelRick replied to crazyjim's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Sounds very similar to WalMart's reason for no longer selling models: the shelf space was not turning enough profit. I sure miss the days when maximum profit was not the only reason for being in business, customer service was just as important. -
Exceptional build . I also have one in the stash, may get to it one of these days. Really like the color and the front license plate. "Welcome Home"! from a SEA participant.

Mazda Vision Concept
TarheelRick replied to Richard Bartrop's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Beautiful design concept, sleek and simple. I am really frustrated with the gaping mouth fronts filled with chrome bars. My only issue with this one are the door lines. The fronts seem to represent a coupe/tudor and the rears seem to be an afterthought. With that low roofline I believe it would be rather difficult for a person of any size (adult) to be able to enter or egress from the back seat. -
Chopped 'n' Dropped Deuce Highboy - Updated 11-28
TarheelRick replied to Bernard Kron's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Looks promising, nice black paint. Waiting for more updates. -
Really nice looking 57, especially like the color scheme. AMT had a '55 Sedan kit and Revell offered a '56 DelRay sedan, don't know how readily available they are at the present, both were released 15 or more years ago.

One question and one comment. COMMENT: Just to be sure everyone understands the idea of using warm water: DO NOT place the can of paint into a pan of boiling water on a stove. Use either hot tap water or very hot water off the stove. QUESTION: I have been trying to use a Duplicolor red and can not get a decent paint job. It looks too thick and almost toyish. I have tried different distances, speeds, and angles, any other suggestions?

Cool build and definitely green. I like what you have done with this one.

If you have a big box craft store (Hobby Lobby, Michael's, A, C, Moore, etc.) check out the jewelry making aisle. They have different sizes of braided cords which make excellent hoses, and they are available in different sizes. Sometimes WalMart has it in their craft section.
