Ultimate Weekend Warrior 4X4 - Community Build
iamsuperdan replied to LouO's topic in Community Builds
I'm in! Will be using the Tamiya Toyota Land Cruiser 80 as a base. I have some ideas for mods, hopefully I can do my vision justice! -
If you haven't figured it out yet, Rex (vamach1) is kind of the official unoffical Mustang expert around here. If you ever have a Mustang question, he WILL have the answer, and it WILL be correct! i like the build, even though I don't get particularly excited by Mustangs. Bright colours just look "right" on this generation.

Highway thru Hell
iamsuperdan replied to dieseldawg142's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Ha! I knew Jamie would slowly snap up all the old trucks! The new Mack is a killer looking truck. Just looks mean and intimidating. Looks like a highway truck though. Unless that is just a representative pic and the reality is a bright red truck? Staying tuned... And I dig the GMC/Chev wrecker. That's still my fav body of truck. -
I got them from a firen who is a major sci fi action figure nerd! If it's plastic and spacey, he buys it! So he had a bunch he wasn't using. I cleaned him out. He found them all on EBay. There's a couple on there now. https://www.ebay.ca/sch/Science-Fiction/16512/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=hangar

Kitchen table, but of course that means I get to pack up every night. If I'm fabbing stuff and mapping out something, I need the space of my workbench! Garage is insulated, but not heated...yet. And everytime the weather gets nice, mother nature turns around, givers us the finger and snows again! lolz. Supposed to be nice this weekend, fingers crossed spring is arriving!
-
Ugh. Still haven't started mine yet. Other than gathering parts. Need the weather to turn, and finally have spring arrive so I can get in to the garage and spread out ideas on the bench!

Excellent build!

Truck-A-Thon 2018
iamsuperdan replied to Goodwrench3's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I'll get in on this. AMT White Western Star Will definitely have a theme which I'll outline in the build thread. -
Come on.... TWD can do better than that.

Santa Clarita Diet is dark comedy, and both seasons are on Netflix. Comedy and gore, how can you lose? -
What did you see on the road today?
iamsuperdan replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Entirely possible. Lots of vehicles destroyed up there at that time. Whereabouts did you see this one? -

Here's the weird thing on this: that's a fairly new license plate. Three letters (starting with B ) then four numbers. This means that car was actively registered with the last five years. And with active registration, one would assume the car was being used. In fact, the registration tag in the lower left corner of the plate is blue. That means the car was last registered in either 2018 or 2014. THe car does look burned out to be, so that would explain a very quick deterioration in condition. -

The show has really taken a nosedive for the past two seasons. Seems like everytime they settle down and try to stay anywhere, the show does downhill. THey need to pack up and start moving again, going somewhere. Actually, I think at this point they need to start the storyline that ends the show. Next year is season 9. I'd say do a max of 10 seasons, and start mapping out and planning an awesome ending to the show. I need a little reality with my zombie shows. This season, everyone has turned into stormtroopers. Tons of shooting, but no one hits anything. And as for Jadis, WTF. If I know that a helicopter was coming at a certain time, and I was going to signal them, there's no way I would leave the signal until it had shown up. Instead, she walks away from her signal, and leaves Negan with arm's reach of guns and flares? That is just stupid. It really ticks me off, as I've been watching this show religiously since day one, and was buying and reading the comics since they first came out. I'm kind of a big fan of the whole zombie genre. So to see one of my fav shows get this dull and dumb. Sad. Right now, I'm enjoying season 2 of Santa Clarita Diet a lot more. It's fantastic! And season 2 of Westworld is back this month. And we'll have season 3 of Stranger Things next fall. -
2018 Chevrolet/GMC stepside
iamsuperdan replied to dieseldawg142's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I typically don't like stepsides, but I would proudly rock these three. The Rams I posted just use the Megacab duallie fenders, tucked in about 10 inches. Technically no steps. -
2018 Chevrolet/GMC stepside
iamsuperdan replied to dieseldawg142's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
A couple of years ago, Ram did a Power Wagon concept...stepside! And the custom guys have tried it too. I kinda dig it. I think. -
It's nice to have a phone with battery life again. Apparently cellphones have a battery life of around 600 recharge cycles. So roughly two years or so. I've been running a Blackberry PRIV for the past two years, and it's been the best phone I've ever used. Hands down, no questions. But, after two years, the battery life dropped, to the point I might get three hours out of a full charge. So I finally made the switch to something new. And because I refuse to pay for a phone, I chose from the "free with plan" offerings from my provider. Ended up with a Samsung Galaxy S8+. i'm not in love with it, but it's good. Some nice features, and I love being able to get two full days out of it before needing to charge it.

2018 Chevrolet/GMC stepside
iamsuperdan replied to dieseldawg142's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Interesting idea, but putting the old square body bed on the new truck just doesn't work for me. I think a more modern looking stepside could be something worth officially bringing back. It was a popular option for a number of years, and on a new reg cab "sport" truck, I think it would still sell. Take a reg cab truck, throw the shortbox stepside on it, the big 6.2L V8, 8-speed tranny, bucket seats, and 22" wheels. I think that would sell. As an aside, so many people dump on the new trucks due to the square wheel well openings, yet look how square they used to be! And no one rags on those. Anyway, I like the new GMC trucks. And because pics are fun, here's the truck I had a couple of summers ago. 2016 Sierra 1500 SLT All Terrain X. And for the record, this would have looked horrible with a stepside. -
I still need to grab one of these kits. You did a great job on it! And I would LOVE to see a kit of the Jeep XJ! Building a replica of my old 1993 XJ Sport would be fantastic.

Wait, what? As you'll easily be able to tell, this is the Aoshima Toyota HiLux kit. But as I'm more of a VW fan than a Toyota fan, I made this the VW Taro, which is essentially the HiLux with VW emblems. I added flocking and seatbelts to the interior, which definitely turned out better than the exterior. i didn't fill in the seam lines on the back of the front seats, as those are invisible on the finished product. Antenna is a guitar string. I tried my hand at making decals. it's funny, the test ones I made turned out a lot better than the finished product. I think I probably didn't let the decal bonder dry enough on these ones. And the Taro emblem is a little larger than it should be.I think maybe I got excited over the prospect of finishing something, so rushed this part. Next one will be better. Still, looks fine on the shelf.

A lot of people (not just here, but in general) seem to equate size with value. We see the comments all the time. "Oh the Colorado is the same price as a Silverado. Why buy the Tacoma, when you can get the Tundra for the same price?" The smaller truck suits many people's lifestyles better. Maybe they don't tow, or require lots of payload, or they live in an apartment with a parkade. But they still need something that can easily carry a couple of mountain bikes, or large dogs. Or whatever. You get all of the same features, but in a smaller package. Yes, it's the same cost, but you're not really comparing the same things. A 1/4 ton truck is not the same as a 1/2 ton, which in turn is not the same as a 3/4 ton. And you can get a half ton for almost the same price as a 3/4 ton these days. ANyway, that was kind of off topic, but it's more on topic than the geography lesson.

Revell Chevy Van, Has It Been Reissued?
iamsuperdan replied to oldcarfan's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
On a related note... https://www.ebay.ca/itm/Revell-Hardy-Boys-GMC-Van-1-25-Model-Kit-1978-Sealed-Unopened/372250245365?hash=item56abd7f8f5:g:ijsAAOSwe1xarCo7 -
Well. We've had snow almost every day for the past week. And it was -24 degrees over night. Today's high not much better than -10 degrees. It's the end of March. Whoever is in charge of the weather can suck it. Seriously, I have a dozen kits I need to start painting, plus a garage floor I need to clean, repair, and coat with that epoxy stuff.

Revell Chevy Van, Has It Been Reissued?
iamsuperdan replied to oldcarfan's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Didn't this one come just a couple of years ago? And now that it seems like all the domestic kits come from Round2, aren't the AMT and Revell kits all the same anyway? Looking at the contents, they sure seem like it. Anyway, there was the AMT Dirty Donny van from a few years back, and the AMT Resuce van. All pretty much identical. -
has anyone seen this kit
iamsuperdan replied to theraif's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
From what I've heard, run far away from Palmer kits! I've seen their Mercury Cougar kits and have been tempted, but apparently they are terrible kits! -
Gauging interest - A Just-Whats-In-The-Box CBP
iamsuperdan replied to Jantrix's topic in Community Builds
I get what you're saying, but isn't that the challenge of the build? If you say that's a box stock build, so only what's in the box...and styrene and other detail parts and supplies, then it really isn't a what's-in-the-box build anymore. Each CBP build-off has a theme, and each theme has it's own set of challenges for those who choose to participate. In this case, the challenge is to keep it box stock. And if someone can't handle that, then maybe this challenge isn't the right fit, and they should take part in the next one. Anyway, this one is your idea, so whatever you say the rules are, that's what the participants need to abide by. It's all good. -
Mike has it right! Consumers demand more stuff in their vehicles, and the various governments and safety groups demand more features. So even today's base vehicles will come standard with AC, bluetooth, power windows/locks/mirrors, cruise, rear camera, traction assist, touch screen stereos, a dozen airbags, etc. Heck on a lot of cars, heated seats, remote starters, and LED lights are now standard. Just based on that alone the cost is going up. Combine that withthe increased demand for more fuel efficiency, more recyclable and renewable parts, higher prices for steel and aluminum, plus the usually yearly inflation of 1-2% on a new vehicles, and it adds up to a vehicle $10k more expensive that it was less than 10 years ago. As an FYI, the 2019 GMC/Chev trucks have been announced, but won't be arriving at dealers until August at the earliest. The order banks don't open until mid-April, and production is currently scheduled to start in June.
