You nailed it. Park a 2018 Ram next to one from 1998, and 1978, and 1958. Trucks are huge now. But that's not just trucks. Park a new VW Golf next to the original. Or a new BMW 3 series next to the original 3 series. Massive! The other growth area for trucks is capacity. A current 1/2 ton will do pretty much what a 15 year old 3/4 ton will do. And a current 3/4 ton will out-two and out-carry a 10 year old one ton. More capacity, with better fuel economy, while adding more creature comforts? So I guess in some respects, bigger is better?

Sacrilege or really cool? Hmmmmm...
iamsuperdan replied to Ace-Garageguy's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
100% agree, although I really like the idea of the electric 911, and would like to drive it and see what it's all about, it's not for me. My dream Porsche is the 964 RS in Maritime Blue. Pure, unfiltered, raw, and noisy. Personally, I need all the sounds and quirks that make a 911 what it is. On a related note... Remember this? Ruf built an electric Porsche. The eRUF Greenster. And this was back in 2008! Before green was"cool." -

I spent most of the 90s and early 2000s working for a Porsche dealer. First as a detailer while going through university, then as a sales guy for 5 years. These have been my dream car since I was a little kid. Not sacrilege. At the end of the day, this particular car was just a 1979 Targa. Not particularily collectible, fairly easy to come by. So I think this is a very cool project, and no more of a sacrilege than building an RS replica out of a similar car. Having said that, if someone took a genuine '73 RS and did this? Where's my flaming pitchfork? i'm starting a mob and raising heII! -
I hear that discussion all the time with guitars. So many people that feel if a guitar is made anywhere but in the US, it's garbage. To each their own, but personally I don't care where my stuff is built. At the end of the day, as long as the quality is there, then where it's built doesn't interest me at all. When we look at our own fleet, we have more warranty issues with a certain US made truck than we do with the Mexi-made ones. I fear this is starting to veer into politics, so to get back on track, when will kit manufacturers smarten up and get some licensing for a modern Ram truck? I want several in 1/24 or 1/25 scale. Now.

Yeah, major shift for FCA to do this. I'm just waiting for a certain someone to take all the credit for a move that has been two years in the making. Anyway... Personally, I like it. Should reduce order times and shipping times by at least a couple of weeks. And as long as the cost of the truck doesn't go up, I think it's great. I hope production of the Promaster vans follows suit, as right now order time is insane at 4-6 months for delivery.

Exactly! That's why the base work truck is so hard to find. Now that we're older, and better off financially, we can afford to treat ourselves to a little more comfort. Having said that, a person can get a cheap truck, with comfort. Have a look at the Ram 1500 ST. Order it with the Hemi, class IV hitch, and the SXT Appearance group. You should be able to get that truck for around $31k CDN ($25k US). A brand new truck, with almost 400hp, four wheel drive, towing equipment, power everything, bluetooth, alloy wheels, four doors, and a decent stereo. Just pick your colour and go.

Actually, the manufacturers can do both. THe problem is that people don't want basic anymore. Go to a dealership and walk the lot. There might one or two basic stripped down work trucks. And 100+ loaded up full option trucks. The dealers order what sells. And invariably, yoou'll get people that say "I just want a cheap truck," so they go to the dealership, look at the base model, and they say "Okay, but can I get the remote starter? Actually, I want satellite radio. Heated seats would be nice. Oh I have to have leather with heated seats? Okay..." And so on and so on. Pretty soon, they're in a mid to high level truck, and the base model sits, drawing people in as a price point. As I've said earlier, you can order a work truck, with all the mechanical stuff that makes it a tow beast or a working piece of equipment, it's that most don't. Even a lot of business now ask for a simple work truck, but then they say they want their guys to be comfortable, so those trucks now have satellite radio, and a remote start, and foglights, etc, etc. Anyway, if anyone wants a basic work truck, hit me up. Vehicles are my job.

Does the torsion bar set up look correct? Did I guess correctly? -
Black vinyl flooring is available on all of the Ram trucks, Ford trucks, and GM trucks. Crank windows available on Ram ST trim level, and on GM half tons, WT trim level. Ford had crank windows available until 2014, haven't checked on the new aluminum trucks.

I can even get you one in forestry green!

You should give me a call, I can get you that truck! You'll never find it on a dealer lot, but we can order base trucks that are VERY base, especially if you can order it using a fleet code. I have many clients that do just that, and I'm always surprised that dealers wouldn't order just one like this to use as an advertiser. Something dirt cheap to put in their newspaper ads or whatever, to get people in the door. Rubber flooring, vinyl seats with no power controls, crank windows, manual mirrors and locks, no remote entry, steel wheels, no chrome, no satellite radio, am/fm radio only, no wi-fi, no cruise control, no touch screens, no multi-colour instrument panel displays, no LED/HID lighting. The only thing not optional that might be deemed a little extraneous would be the AC. Heck, want it without a trailer hitch? No problem. Want to delete the rear bumper and all the badging? Piece of cake. You want a zipper truck? No problem!
-
You can still get that truck! From Ram, GM, and Ford!
-
Huh? I don't see that at all.

$40 seems pretty optimistic for a brand new tooling and brand new company. Hope it works out, as we need more selection and choice!

In 2017, in the US only, Ram outsold Toyota Tundra by about 400,000 units. I knew people would bring up Tundra. If you look at all the trucks on the market, they all have styling elements that are also used by Toyota. Headlight shapes, door creases, cab corners, bottom corners of rear doors, tail lights, wheels ,etc.

I'll have Canadian MSRP and invoice pricing pretty soon. Hope fully the fleet concessions are similare to the current model.

The new Chev has it's own thread, so the Ram gets one too! 2019 Ram dbuted yesterday at the Detroit Auto Show. Already have an order placed for a Ram 1500 Limited. Not as polorizing as the new Chev. More of an evolution, even though the truck is completely new. Has pseudo-hybrid tech in it, benefits of which will remain to be seen. https://www.motorauthority.com/news/1114779_2019-ram-1500-first-look-big-rig-turns-the-page Interesting that the Sport trim level appears to be gone, as that was a massive seller. In Canada anyway.

2019 Silverado

So it was a big day around here yesterday. The Detroit auto show is in full swing, and the 2019 Silverado made it's full debut yesterday. I like the specs, I like the tech, I'm on the fence about that front end. I think the Trail Boss trim level works for me, but the other trim levels? Umm... https://www.motorauthority.com/news/1114795_2019-chevrolet-silverado-video-preview -
2019 Mustang Bullitt
iamsuperdan replied to iamsuperdan's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Cashing in on nostaligia, nothing more. In some cases it works, it other cases it's a blatant cash grab. I look at it the same way I see signature models in the world of guitar. I personally won;t buy a replica of an Eddie Van Halen guitar, or a George Lynch guitar, but in most cases I like that they exist. If you ever get a chance to drive a new Mustang, do so. As I said at the start, I'm not a Ford guy. But they did a good job with the new gen Mustang. We have a couple in our fleet here, which I was able to spend some quality time with this past fall. The 5.0L with a manual transmission is still the way to go. Yeah, the EcoBoost is fast, but it sounds like a Ford Fusion, and who wants that? Plus, the 5.0L comes with Line Lock; the factory burnout mode. And works awesome! Total hooligan, but it feels great! -

Also, I opened up the trailer going with this truck and started removing pieces and cleaning them up. -

Finally got around to getting the torsion bar set up done and pictured. It was tough, because the instructions suck, there were no part numbers on the trees, and I couldn;t find any pics of the real setup to see if I was doing this correctly! Having said all that, it's all on, it looks right, and everything sits level and as square as it can be with the warped frame. The big test will be once I get the wheels on and see if they all touch the ground at the same time! Will be doing some finishing filling, sanding, and cleanup over the next week or so. It's getting to the point that it needs to warm up outside so I can start spraying some colour. I started getting some paint on interior pieces last night. No pics of that yet. -
2019 Mustang Bullitt
iamsuperdan replied to iamsuperdan's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Persdonal, I'd take care of the mechanical, and preserve the patina and that body. Stop it from deteriorating any further. But I wouldnt restore it. And like the owner, I'd leave it as original as possible while doing the mechanical work. If parts can be reused, I would. -

I like how Ford has done the Bullitt tribute cars. Yes, they've done them a few times before, and everyone of them has been what I felt was the best version in that lineup. No stripes, no goofy spoilers, no chrome. Just simple, clean, and fun. And this one is a slightly bigger deal, as it's the 50th anniversary of the movie this year. I thought the bigger reaction here would be that the original movie hero car was found and used for this launch. Is this one not a Holy Grail Mustang? I mean, it's not the original Eleanor, but it's still a pretty amazing piece of movie history.
