‘57 Chevy Stepside

I’ve been fiddling with this off and on lately. I managed to get some interior door handles and window cranks made. Now I am making some tailgate hinges and chains that can be installed after paint. That’s all for now. -

Thanks David. I am going to use the glass from the ‘55 Cameo kit. It fits much better. Thanks Steve. I intended to just follow the instructions and build it OOB, but….? -

Wow, simply amazing details you are adding Kurt. I really like the weathering job on the exterior. Also, those door handles and window cranks are very nicely done! Please do a detailed account of how you built them and add them to my thread in the tips and tricks section. I’m sure everyone would love to see them.

Yeah, that is a cool looking truck! No action here since Jan 2018, and his last post on the forum was May 2020. I hope he’s still OK, and just taking a break. -
Well I am flattered to be an inspiration to a builder of your talents Steven. I hope to improve the process and the looks a bit with each set I make….and I know I’ll be making more.? On the first set I just had a butt joint between the disc and the handle, but it was too weak of a joint. Then I got the idea for the backing sheet. You can’t see it in my photos, but I have a shallow hole drilled in the wood that the locating pin protrudes into. You could also put another disc on the backside to give it a little standoff from the door panel if desired.

This AMT ‘57 Chevy has next to no detail on the interior door panels. So I made some. I used a piece of 1/16” id brass tube to punch some circles from 0.015” styrene and then glued them and a short strip of 0.015”x0.030” evergreen to some 0.010” sheet. Then I drilled for a 0.025” mounting pin and added a short piece of 0.030” rod for the window crank handle. File the pin flush on top and trim off the excess sheet with a hobby knife. A touch of Molotow and they’re done. Not as nice as photo etch maybe, but basically free and much better than what wasn’t there.

You’re welcome. I like the S-10s…I had an ‘84 extended cab 2wd with the 2.8 and manual trans that I really liked. Then I bought a brand new ‘91 2wd extended cab on impulse off the lot. I liked it, but it was gutless since it had the 2.5 and auto trans. Good luck with your project if you pursue it.?

With high quality tools, you can quite often get a lifetimes worth of use out of them, whereas with the cheap Chinese knockoffs you might be lucky to get one job done.
