  1. Ohhh, this will be a COOL project - will definitely be watching out for this one!
  2. And, seamlessly continued from the last post…mixed up some Createx today… And shot a base color: I could maybe do a WIP thread for this one, but it only has like 2 more interesting steps left and then it’s finished ?
  3. Or he’d call me a hack and tell me to quit copying ? These things look good two-toned too, so I have some ideas to move this from ‘rip off’ territory to ‘inspired by’… Different model, same concept…
  4. I’m a big fan of Hot Wheels, plus I’m a design nerd and I really like when designers put ‘easter eggs’ in their designs - little details and surprises to be noticed upon closer inspection. They do the same in movies and TV shows - little nods and details for knowledgable fans that might not be obvious on first viewing. For example, the Hot Wheels Porsche 944 has a stethoscope on the rear parcel shelf as a nod to the designer’s doctor who had the same model Porsche. Their Pontiac Aztec has a Heisenberg hat in the interior to reference the vehicles appearance in Breaking Bad…stuff like that. These well thought out little touches really make me want to do a better job of adding stuff like that to MY builds…I’d be interested to hear if anyone here adds fun little ‘in joke’ details to their projects too? I made a diorama piece for a friend a while back and added graffiti stickers and tags on the edges that were scale versions of actual ones in the subject’s neighborhood - they’re not actually visible when the finished piece is in it’s shadow box unless you shine a torch in there and view it from the right angle: Here’s a fun design feature I found on a Hot Wheels I picked up this past week - a HW Corvette: Instead of the usual rivet on the front of the base it has a clear plastic circle - and if you shine a light in there the headlamps illuminate! If anyone else knows of any other cool hidden details like this on diecasts (or in model kits?!) I’d love to hear them!
  5. My wife made me go to her friend’s kids birthday party today, probably as punishment for going to Florida without her and spending too much time racking a tab on the company credit card in Hooters. Anyhoo…in return for redeeming myself at the kid’s party we hit Michael’s and Joann Fabrics in a town we don’t usually visit… Found some paint and glue in Michael’s, and Joann had Atlantis kits PLUS a 40% off on their website so a Midget followed me home:
  6. Thank you sir! Thank you too! Huh! Interesting! Good thing it’s kustom, or I’d DEFINITELY be doing something wrong (maybe?!)…ha! Progress on this one ground to a halt last week because I was out of state for a work thing…I considered taking it with me but didn’t feel like letting Southwest have a shot at busting it…but I was excited yesterday to get home and get back to it. Did a few rounds of filling and priming on the body yesterday, then a few more today…just tweaking some little areas to get it good as I could…got it looking ok in primer I think…(excuse the blurry nose in this pic - it’s crisp in real life…) And then, shot some Electric Pink today: This color really pops! Would pop even more over a pure white base instead of the light gray, but I’m planning some highlights in a slightly different lighter shade, so this works fine for what I have in mind. Incidentally, I DID work on this little 1/32 Testor’s kit while I was away…sure did have some bright clashing colors in the booth today ? Thanks for looking - more soon, soon as I’ve done more!
  7. That hood has one of the best lacquer clear-coat jobs I’ve seen in a while…nice work!!
  8. I like the Tamiya polishing compounds too, but I find they work best on heavy ‘orange peel’ like this if you start out with some wetsanding; I usually like a 3600 pad (or cloth) or there abouts Polish the affected area until it’s uniformly level and satin (with no shiny spots) and then work thru the compounds
  9. I was on a business trip to FL this past week so I packed a few supplies and started work on this Testor’s 1/32 Bonneville car: Perfect low-parts-count low-stress vacation project…I think it’ll end up replicating the original Hawk box art: I like it better than the Testor’s take, although that is cool too… Got it cleaned up and into primer today ready for some color tomorrow…planning for this one to be completely box stock, and maybe add progressively more detail to the rest of the series as I work through them…
  10. I was lucky enough to have a work assignment in Orlando this past week, and wasn’t going to miss out on checking out the Dezerland collection; over 1000 cars of all eras, valued at over $200m and featuring a bunch of prominent movie cars. Some teasers below and a bunch of photos of the stuff that interested me here: https://public.fotki.com/NewYorkSpeedShop/11-cars/car-shows/orlando-auto-museum/

  11. This will be available in the next “month or two” according to whoever it was at Revell who appeared in someone’s show coverage video this weekend… (I realize that’s a little vague but I forgot where I saw that little tidbit…apologies)
  12. That’s a great start…looks MEAN!
  13. Nahuel has one: https://cults3d.com/en/3d-model/game/1926-1927-ford-t-roadster-hot-rod-car-body
  14. Thank you! I never really took notice of all these 50s Cadillacs before, but now I have a few I wanna build! That recess is where the chrome trim goes, if you’re referring to what I think you’re referring to…no narrowing or anything on this one…even using the kit’s mounting pins/holes to get everything aligned nicely tho, everything doesn’t really align nicely. Case in point - check the door lines and how they align to the red trim that attaches to the bottom: The ‘scoop’ lines up great, the front two lines are level on the body AND the trim…but the rear one is off probably a sixteenth. On the other side, exact opposite…the rearmost line and the scoop align perfectly but the doors are off. I know the body is square and true, so I’m just messing with those lines instead, filling and re-scribing the ones that need it. No biggie ?‍♂️ Picked up some paint today…kinda a cliche…but I imagined this thing pink from the start… I think it’ll need a white base to really make it pop…got another shade I want to try before I decide tho…
  15. Mine has had a good restock since I last visited - I managed to leave without bringing anything with me (which is even more remarkable as my wife wasn’t there to curb my enthusiasm)…nothing on clearance, sadly…
  16. Tiny update, but an important step completed…got this thing on it’s wheels! First time fitting the glass and roof too - I added a couple of tabs to the b-pillars to give me something to use to glue it to the body…I can’t imagine this was much fun to assemble for a kid in the late 50s - it’s making me nervous even with the wide range of adhesives we have available now… Also started digging for some lights to replace the flat chromed lens-less kit pieces…found this whilst parts huntin’’- cop car variant? Spent the rest of my bench-time today getting that body dialed in…there’s a lot of real-estate on this one! More soon, soon as I’ve done more!
  17. Nice 80s Mustang that a guy at work owns:
  18. Thanks fellas! I like those big wheels too! I know that render isn’t the exact same model (at least, I don’t think it is?) but I like it all the same…I think I’m erring more on the side of the Watson look right now, but as usual that’s subject to change at any moment… A little progress this weekend so far…I wanted to try some wire wheels on this thing so I fired up the printer… Those kit tires have a recessed lip so I ground that out so I could use them…I think they’ll look cool on there… I’ve been doing some more (a lot more) bodywork, as you can see…also made a start on the chrome side trim…modified it slightly and then drilled and inserted styrene pins to help make it easier to lock in place nice and straight come assembly time… And today’s project was working on a new ‘frame’. Frame in inverted commas, because this build is going to be completely and utterly curbside but I didn’t feel good about hacking the remains of the kit underside into some kinda mess so I could mount wire axles where I wanted to. So, today I mocked up something in cardboard that will work just well enough to hold it all together… …and then built it with 2mm, 1mm and 0.75mm styrene sheet: This was all completely and utterly unnecessary, I could’ve messed with the kit frame to make this work, or swapped in one of a few actual detailed frames that would’ve worked…but I had the idea and wanted to build it, so I built it ? Next job is to get the wheels mounted to my ‘origami’ frame and then make sure it all fits together still…more soon, soon as I’ve done more!
  19. Two new preorders announced today too - Atlantis has been busy! I spotted the TD Vette too - I’d jump at the chance to get one of those!
  20. Is that what the yellow frame in the display case is?
  21. A new pack of my favorite notepads: Some fun facts from the rear cover: And this week I also picked up a display case…$40, because the light didn’t work: Plot twist…the light does work if you turn the switch to the ‘on’ position: Plus this cool old box that took my fancy:
  22. Me too! For a more subtle wash, or for small parts, I like black India ink, and I mix up some artist’s acrylic as people above recommended for something larger like a grille
  23. Great eye, thanks Mark! I wondered if that was a Newport I saw, but I wasn’t particularly confident in my guess…I’d be stoked if that one was reissued!
  24. Intriguing !! Does anyone with better knowledge than me recognize what the test shots are?
  25. “We’re working on some new items” said Atlantis in a vid they posted today - they had a couple of sets of test-shots plus some old kit boxes in the background…maybe some hints at stuff coming down the line soon? Excuse the blurry images, but it’s hard to get a still from a video…video link here, for anyone interested: https://www.instagram.com/reel/C5ZHoPburHb/?igsh=MmlzcnBxcW9tY2Y4
