I got a half dozen of these when Revell dumped them at Toy Liquidator stores for five bucks each when the sales didn't come up to expectations the first time around. Found out that the interior out of this fits the sedan if you want to make a contemporary rod, or use the AMT bodies and you can build a sectioned custom version, still playing around with the one I started using the phantom Vicky lower body, and the original AMT Vicky top to make a full fendered street rod, half way through I decided to use a half breed chassis of the two deuce frames and got sidetracked and set it aside for something else. Guess that's why I have so many different half done builds, I get off course so easy.

1957 Chevrolet Bel Air from Return to Macon County
horsepower replied to Atmobil's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Did you notice that the filming must have been done with a projection screen shot, or the dash add on gauges are just dummies, since in both shots either the engine isn't running or the gauges and tach aren't hooked up. Everything is at zero readout. -
Yeee Ha, look at 'em go
horsepower replied to Greg Myers's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Not all Wal-Mart stores are selling models, out of five stores in driving range to me, only one store has models. Lucky for me it's the closest one and is only five minutes away. -
There's a wagon that's smaller and plainer than the Ambassador, this is that one isn't it? By full size, I meant it's not based on the Metropolitan body style. Sorry for not being very clear on that.

1961 Starliner Mild Custom. Update, 8/8 Finished!!
horsepower replied to StevenGuthmiller's topic in WIP: Model Cars
A little polishing should take the blushing out, the clear might even do it, have to be very careful about draining the air tank and water trap before laying on the wet coats. -
Great job, only thing missing is a burnt spot on the hood, then you can detail the carb a little, display it with a screw driver and a wrench on the fender with the air cleaner off and sitting on the other fender.

One of the grandkids dropped a piece of red candy on the back seat, I hope it wasn't a broken crayon instead. ;-)

Real or Model #234 Finished!
horsepower replied to Harry P.'s topic in Real or Model? / Auto ID Quiz
I thought it was a model at first, but closer examination makes me feel more like real, so I'm going with real. -
I may have missed out on part of the engine discussion on what would be a good match to put into this, the closest in appearance would be the engine form the 1950 Chevrolet 3100 pickup, even though it's supposed to be a 216 c.i. instead of a 235, they're virtually identical in appearance, this is a 1/25 scale engine though, the only 1/24 Chevy I can think of comes in the Monogram 1953 Chevy hardtop kit, and that with the stock valve cover is about the same in appearance with the center bolt valve cover instead of the bolts on the perimeter, only problem is it comes with a powerglide two speed automatic transmission instead of the manual three speed. Most don't know it, but ALL the Chevrolet sixes all the way back to the little 194 c.i. have all the passages for pressure oiling systems in the block, all it would take is drilling and tapping the needed passages for the oil pump and its mounting bolts. From the outside the dimensions are the same, it's not until you get into the GMC 270 c.i. engine does the outside dimensions change, the trick to putting the longer "Jimmy" into the Chevy is using a Pontiac water pump that is much shorter. Just a little 1:1 stuff for the inline fans.

I know that I'm not going to change any minds here, but I'm going to assume that not all of the options available are shown in the photo of the test shot, and knowing that it will come with a three two set up I'm going to assume (yeah I know the old adage) that one of the other parts included will be a hood to cover the engine, and since plastic can't represent the scale thickness of a hood, I'm going to assume (there I go again) that the undersized firewall might be a consolation to having the hood fit properly when in place, who knows it might even have a hood that goes over the blown motor, but to show the motor details better wasn't shown in the "leaked" photo. I'm just tossing this out for consideration, there just might be a nice model there if ALL the parts intended to be on it are in place, but if you want to build it without a hood, then you are changing the kit and you're back into being a modeler, not just a model builder.

1/25 Revell Ford Del Rio Ranch Wagon 2'n'1
horsepower replied to Matt T.'s topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
There actually was a rear bumper without guards offered, I don't know if it's the optional one or the standard one, but the '57 Ranchero my father in law had was without guards on any of the bumpers, the only difference I can see and it's not a big one is the center section where the plate goes is a little deeper recess, and the lights for the plate are in the bevels on each end of the plate, but they didn't work very well because they came even with the plate surface without any frames on the plate and with plate frames most were almost covered by the end surface and only about half the light actually was able to shine across the plate. -
Love that pearl gold upholstery, but since it's an independent suspension car on all four corners you needed to add a bunch of negative camber to really make it outrageous.

Curved Masking Tape
horsepower replied to martinfan5's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Or you can go to your local auto body supply store and get 3M fine line tape that is available down to 1/16" width and it is excellent for making a very sharp curve and comes in 60 yard rolls for less than $20. -
1/25 Revell Ford Del Rio Ranch Wagon 2'n'1
horsepower replied to Matt T.'s topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Went in to pick mine up yesterday and the dealer let me know that they had back ordered half the order, but all the ones that came in were gone in the first day. So I had to settle for another of the SWC Willys reissues, and put my name on the first wagon out of the box when they come in. -

Sure do, is it just me or does that black one look like it has a Chevy truck roof on it? -
Another toy to want
horsepower replied to Daddyfink's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
That's probably very true, I have a doctor and a physical therapist friends that both race in vintage classes and both have had expensive open wheel racers, the Dr had the F-1 Lola Jackie Stewart drove to the World Championship in 1970, and the physical therapist owned an early Dan Gurney Eagle. The only problem that would be much better about buying one of these new production cars is the availability of parts and modern engine pieces when needed, a Cosworth F-1 engine for a backup engine was $125,000 ten years ago, I'd hate to buy one today. -
I think it's a great idea, but maybe call it building corrections, that way folks wouldn't assume that errors and corrections had anything to do with something the magazine has done. How about it Harry, Gregg? Maybe there should be a area for pre production kit complaints, these would go to a file that self deletes after one hour, that way those who want to nit pik and rant about a kit that hasn't hit the market yet can do so, and get it out of their system, and the rest of us can go back to enjoying the hobby. (Please notice the tongue in cheek here, just a little hint)

I've seen a few of these that came in a color between a tan and a very light apricot color that is quite distinctive. The closest I've seen on color charts is the beige, it must pick up its apricot/salmon tint from red pigments in the formulation when it starts to fade.

This is supposed to be the full size Nash Rambler wagon, I think it's a 1950 but don't hold me to it. These I think that was just wishful thinking, they're supposed to be very aerodynamic, but I think that their nickname of the upside down bathtub is probably just as close to the aerodynamic capabilities as could be expected.

Go with a 427 SOHC Ford motor like the one from the'33 Willys kit, they are available from other kits also. Would make a motor as nasty as aHemi, but keep it all Ford.

UPDATED: Stockton CA NNL and Swap Meet Sunday July 12 2015
horsepower replied to jbwelda's topic in Contests and Shows
Any idea if Bob is still promoting this show, or if even the model show and swap meet still run with the 1:1 swap meet? And when it is? Thanks for any help I might get. Also like to know if the July show still happens? -
OK, I concede on the "Blower" issue.
horsepower replied to Greg Myers's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Evidently not a real racer, you know that racers measure with a micrometer, mark with a crayon and cut with a torch. lol -
I can remember buying and installing a four track player into my parents '64 Chevelle in 1966, it was promptly stolen and I replaced it with an eight track, both were under dash. To try and outsmart the thieves, I put the under dash player in my '56 Chevy in the glove compartment, the only thing that did was have them tear up the whole thing, and about half the under dash wiring.

A few years back I built a highly customized '57 Buick from a Chezoom kit for a commissioned build for a friend, I did all the body work and gave it to him in primer and he finished the build from there. It went on to win best custom at that years fall Goodguys show in Pleasanton, CA.
