To err is human? Some are uncorrectable.
SSNJim replied to bonehead23's topic in How To Use This Board
I wouldn't count on your voice in own home being private, either. With all these smart appliances that are always listening, you can't be sure who or what is on the other end. Recently products my wife and I have only discussed have been showing up as web ads. Coincidence? Maybe. My phone's assistant will occasionally randomly speak up with information related to our current conversation. I'm not particularly paranoid, but I am concerned about privacy and what I say where. -
I'm not sure how they decide to ship things. This particular item came in a padded envelope: It is packed in an unassembled box, then shrinkwrapped. Here it is opened: Yes, I had to assemble the box. Another model I purchased at about the same time from the same manufacturer was shipped in a box, packaged the same way. This flat box/bag thing is new for them. I have 10 or so of this company's submarines, and most came in assembled boxes inside a shipping box. 3 of the last 4 came packed in a bag. The kits were in fine shape with no broken or missing pieces.

Great! I'm glad it works for you. You can do a lot of cool things with activity streams. I use one that allows me to view all new postings in all forums since my last visit. No searching for new content - it's right there when I connect to the site. Enjoy!

I can't see a Kia Soul without looking for the hamsters/Guinea pigs driving it. I've been deeply disappointed so far.

Try this to filter. I use a similar method to view the forums every time I visit. I did test it by eliminating the Off-Topic forums, and it doesn't show the Off-Topic, um, topics. Activity > My Activity Streams > Create New Stream Give it a title. Whatever you want, no one will see it. Content Types > Topics > Hit the down arrow on the right. A Narrow by Forums selection box will appear. Pull down the arrow in that. Select all the Forums you want to see. When done, click outside the box. All forums you selected will be listed. Save Changes in the lower right corner. To use it, select Activity > My Activity Streams > name of your new activity. You can also edit/change it when you have the activity selected. There will be several boxes just below the name of the activity at the top of the screen. You can have several activities saved, and use them whenever you like.

1950 Oldsmobile Club Coupe
SSNJim replied to jjsipes's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
My guess is that it is a modified 1951 Chevy Fleetline body and should use that chassis. Oldsmobiles have a longer wheelbase than Chevrolets. I would imagine when that body was mastered, the 1950 Olds kit was not available. -
Missed it by that much. :)

Don't forget the Cadillac that zigs, the Catera. It was a rebadged Opel Omega B. I think I'd have preferred the Admiral - it looks more like a Cadillac.

I've got one of these promos. I had been looking for one for a while, and a deal came up. There was also a contemporary Buick Regal promo of which I have two. One was pretty beat up, so I redid that one. Neither of the boxes or models seem to have the manufacturer's name. Lee, very nice build. I've always liked the Reattas.

I don't have any stake in this discussion, but I was curious. I've never seen a car with 4 bumper guards that wasn't the outcome of an order from JC Whitney. Frazer 1947 factory promotional items show 4 bumper guards. http://www.lov2xlr8.no/brochures/kaiser/47fz/47fz.html

The return of the Lamborghini Countach
SSNJim replied to Ftraven's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I really like it, too. I've always thought the prototype LP500 and first LP400 were beautiful cars, and this is very close. In fact, the one in the back looks like the first LP500 prototype which was destroyed in crash testing. -
I needed a screen name for the AOL IM we used at work. So, I ended up using this one and it's stuck with me over many accounts. SSN from nuclear submarines, Jim is my name.

Supposedly he has 400 posts. I don't know if that is popping in and slamming the door, but it does seem kind of wierd. I did see the cars (if only for a minute), and they seemed to be pretty nice. I'm not sure why he took his ball and went home, but it may have had something to do with nobody signing up for his instagram friendship. Seemed pretty sudden, though.

I would have paid full price, too. If I see something I want and it's the only one, it's coming home with me. And, I always check behind the front row of boxes for things that people have "hidden". I figure if someone else wanted it, they would have bought it, or a store employee was doing a cursory job of straightening up the aisle. I've missed out on too many kits that I wanted because I waited for any one of many reasons, so I now buy them when I see them.

i bought a 1979 Mustang in 1982 that had 25,000 miles on it. My parents had a fit because I bought a car with such high mileage. I got quite a few miles out of that, but not more than 50,000. I bought a used 30000 mile 1996 Ranger I put another 125,000 miles on, a 1997 Crown Vic that had 100,000 I took up to 150,000, a new 2007 Focus we put 160,000 on, and a new 2007 Honda Goldwing with 112,000 miles on it. Just routine maintenance on most of them. the occasional alternator type failures. The Focus had a failed transmission solenoid that was fixed under the drivetrain warranty. None of them I would call a clunker or problem, not a lot of recalls. Cars today are much more reliable now than they have ever been. Almost every vehicle I or my wife have owned since the mid-90s has surpassed 100,000 miles with very few significant failures. Now 100,000 mile cars are common - in the 60's and 70's they were extremely rare. Is that planned obsolescence?
-
You mean the way carmakers would update trim and such every year, and totally redesign cars every 3 years in the 50s/60s/70s? Or the way carmakers make cars identically for 6-10 years nowadays with few, if any, changes? Our 2017 Escape was totalled after less than a year. We replaced it with an identical 2018 Escape - same equipment, same trim, same color. The 2018 is indistinguishable from the 2017. The only thing that changed was the year digit and sequential serial number in the VIN. Couldn't have done that in 1957, 1967 or probably even 1977. Of course, if you're talking about being able to take the distributor cap off your 1957 Chevy V-8 and slap it on your 1976 Chevy V-8, that's a different matter. Unllke now, engines rarely changed then. You were able to walk in to K-Mart and pick up points, condensers, spark plugs and wires, distributor cap, air filter, oil filter and oil to do the way too often tune-up on your 65 Chevy and 69 Ford. That was actually kind of nice. I guess planned obsolescence is where you find it.

Fujimi and Italeri cars in hobby shops now?
SSNJim replied to SSNJim's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Yeah, I don't know either. Just kind of odd they all of a sudden appeared in two unrelated chains. It could just be a glut of inventory, but I dunno. -
Fujimi and Italeri cars in hobby shops now?
SSNJim replied to SSNJim's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
There are a few left in the DC area. This one local chain, that once had 4 or 5 stores is down to two. All the other stores (chain and independent) in the DC Metro store are gone - there used to be quite a few. The national chain is Hobby Town USA; there's one about 50 miles from me. There's one more independent I haven't checked yet. It is very close to a bridge that is very heavily used as the gateway to the beaches in the summer, and it can be difficult to get to on the weekends. -
In the last month or so, the hobby shops around here have been getting a bunch of Italeri and Fujimi cars. They've always had the military kits, but only rarely the cars. There are two chains (one national, one local) that I'm seeing it at. Both these chains have had only AMT, Revell, Moebius and the occasional Tamiya up until recently. Any ideas on why the sudden plethora of Fujimi/Italeri models? Don't get me wrong - I'm thrilled. I'm just curious as to what is going on.

I was going to mention Submarine Voyage, but apparently it came back as Nemo's Submarine Voyage so I guess it is possible the Flying Saucers could come back. I was in submarine training at the time, so it was a pretty cool ride. I could have ridden it all day. It turns out that the Disneyland ride wasn't anything like the Navy ride. Were the Flying Saucers like an air hockey table?

Any news of Revell do something this year !
SSNJim replied to Mr mopar's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
The 1957 Thunderbirds had an available pale pink color called "Dusk Rose". Nowhere near as loud as that box art bird. Reminds me of my grandparent's bathroom. In the early 70's. they wanted to paint it a very pale salmon pink, so they ran up to the hardware store and bought the paint. They applied the paint, and it was about the hottest pink you could imagine. "Well, it's because the paint is wet. The color will probably be right when it dries". Twenty years later, you still broke a sweat going into the bathroom. Still a very hot, vibrant pink. The same thing may have happened with the box art . -
Revell 1957 Cadillac 4 door made into a convertible.
SSNJim replied to carbuilder1950's topic in Model Cars
Nice Caddy, but the Fordor Thunderbird behind it is what intrigues me. -
Why does the dragstrip have a curve in it?
