Your Deuce Coupe illustrates what a good looking model can be built directly from the box and enhanced with some personal touches.

Garage 56 Le Mans 2023 Camaro
Phildaupho replied to Phildaupho's topic in WIP: Other Racing: Road Racing, Land Speed Racers
Thanks Dan - I knew the livery was going to be a challenge with this model so today I decided to see if I could manipulate the images I downloaded from the internet to work as decals. What you see is my first attempt printed on paper and stuck on with Scotch Tape. Looks promising I think -

Garage 56 Le Mans 2023 Camaro

I have started the modification and it looks like I will only be using the grills from the diecast although its underbody provides a demo rolling chassis. I have got an idea of how to represent the distinctive multi element LED headlights. Below the photo is a list of additional modifications I will be attempting. Extend front splitter Add front dive planes Add side mirrors Add rear canards Fill fuel filler on left rear fender Add fuel filler to right side rear window Add more strakes to rear diffuser Replace steering wheel with one more rectangular with control buttons Add paddle shifters eliminating stick shift -
Thanks guys - Previously I have built two VW vans. Sometime in the 1980’s before I considered myself a car modeller I put together the Revell Vanagon era Westfalia with a minimal amount of painting. More recently the grandkids and I clicked together right out of the box with no painting at all the Airfix Lego-like Split Window which looks a lot like my old 1/1. So, this current build continues my trend of building VW vans with the least amount of painting. I still have three VW van kits in my stash – all split windows. One is the excellent Revell of Germany Camper which I plan to build box stock. I also have Revell and Hasegawa Micro-buses. I can’t make up my mind whether I should build one as a replica of my old 1/1 or as I wished it could have been. Maybe I will do both.

Every summer I try to find a model car project that I can work on while camping. This summer I figured what could be better than building a camper while camping - namely the excellent Revell of Germany easy-click bay window VW Westfalia Camper Van. The model was built over 4 days in campsite. I did not keep track of time spent but it must have been at least 6 hours and maybe as much as 8. The 18 pages of instructions are very well produced and need to be followed for a successful build. My supplies consisted of an Exacto knife, a sprue cutter and black, silver, red and orange Sharpie pens. If I had studied the instructions before departing, I would have also taken a brown Sharpie for some of the interior panels. Virtually no glue was used during assembly, although I finally glued a mudflap and licence plate that kept falling off. The click system works exceptionally well. I am extremely impressed with the engineering of this kit and how well everything fits together. There are five opening components – the 2 front doors, the sliding side door, the rear hatch, and the engine compartment door. When closed they stay tight with very realistic gaps. The kit comes with water slide decals and stickers. Both are very high quality printed in Italy. For my campsite build I only used the stickers although I may later add the decal upholstery and mud flap emblems. As suggested by Tim K in his MCM article, I did chrome foil the hubcap on the spare. This was a very pure model car building experience – simple yet satisfying.

Totally agree. A number of times in the past I have tried doing my own conversions only to have a proper kit become available. Like I said in the opener I am just trying for a reasonable facsimile with my build but it should be a fun challenge -

Both of those cars were at Le Mans this year in a Garage 56 museum. Check out the video on Racer.com -
I will say it again when you post your creation Under Glass - this is Grade A Number One Primo. I love it. Very well built and so cool.

I really enjoyed this bit of car modelling history as I did the story of the real car in Rodders Journal. Over the years I have seen a few of these built from the kit and other worthy scratch builds. -
Garage 56 Le Mans 2023 Camaro

I managed to free up the grill and headlight assembly from the diecast now the challenge is fitting it. The bowtie emblem was part of the metal body but I was able to cut it away. I will not be able to get back to this project until next week after the race is history. -
Hendricks Motorsports has entered a modified NASCAR Camaro in the special Garage 56 category in this years 24 Hours of Le Mans. Garage 56 is open to cars not fitting the regular sanctioned classes. I am an automotive enthusiast liking all genres and periods of the automobile. I am also an auto racing fan and although I appreciate all forms of car racing, I am predominantly interested and follow road racing. That being said, the NexGen NASCAR has intrigued me to the point of wanting to build one of the Salvinos JR kits but the local hobby shop did not bring them in. On a recent trip to California, I purchased one of the 2022 kits with the idea of trying to build it as a reasonable facsimile of the Garage 56 Camaro with the goal of completing it before the June 10 green flag to start the 24 Hours of Le Mans. This project fell off the rails when I was initially unable to get a kit with a useable stock grill and headlights. The AMT full detail 2017 Camaro did not seem available in Canada but I did purchase an AMT Snap 2015 Camaro. It was not much help as the front-end detail was molded in place and the scale difference between the 1/25 of this kit and the 1/24 of the NASCAR kit is huge. Marshall Pruett’s Racer.com coverage of the Garage 56 Camaro leading up to the race has reignited my interest. Today I managed to acquire a diecast Maisto 1/24 2017 Camaro ZLI which will supply the grills and headlights. If I was not going away camping this week, I might have contemplated trying to do a 24 hour build as one of my available TV channels is telecasting the entire race. I previously built the prototype version of the Deltawing which eventually raced at Le Mans in a modified configuration under the Garage 56 classification. This is also not the first road race version of a current century Camaro I have built. Back in 2008 I modified the Revell Concept Camaro into a phantom Great Recession Canadian GT racer. I have also built five other American cars that raced in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. 1966 – Chaparral 2D [converted from Daytona configuration] 1967 – Ford GT MKIV [MPC] 1969 – NART Corvette 1996 – Viper [development car] 2000 – Corvette C5R [before kit available]

Thanks Jim Thanks Al - The decals are temporary and will be removed before posting on the Cannonball finished build thread for the race the middle of November but for now they advertise the event.

I appreciate your diligence enhancing, cropping and archiving all these photos. I have viewed at them all and look forward to the final 200. With this most recent batch, I really enjoyed seeing all the vintage Indy cars and F1.

Thanks - I really appreciate your comments. Here are a couple of additional photos as tributes to both the Carrera Panamericana and Cannonball.
