Vintage dwarf cars
Erik Smith replied to Scott8950's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
4 feet 10 inches, otherwise most of you would be dwarves. -
Hellcat Gremlin X
Erik Smith replied to 1930fordpickup's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
It's close. I think sectioning the front end so it's the same level as the rocker panels would remove some of the mouth breather look it has going. It's cool concept though. -
Nice. I keep thinking about getting one of those Isuzu 117 Coupes. Neat little car.

Yeah, very similar. The European version has a “siamesed” two port exhaust - US version has three ports. But I’m not too worried about it - they were mostly black and pretty boring looking!

Great looking BMW! I have a couple of the rally versions. Only complaint is the interior door panels, but Hasegawa seems to be making some improvements in their newer kits.

Most likely explanation? Meng doesn’t think it can make enough money.

How to fill small gaps?
Erik Smith replied to Safire6's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I agree with Bill’s advice above. I do the same thing with car engine blocks - the pins lead to misaligned parts. Cut pins off, sand both halves flat, hold together whilst wicking thin glue on the joint, press to get a little ridge of melted plastic, clamp if needed, let dry. A very strong joint and filled gap. -
A Replica Of My Vintage Race Car
Erik Smith replied to Miatatom's topic in Other Racing: Road Racing, Salt Flat Racers
Very cool. Bugeye sprites are kind of a universal love. I really like getting out and watching the vintage race cars like these, but the events have been cancelled around me for the last couple years. Hopefully this year! -
Great work! Spectacular paint jobs and super clean building. Thanks for taking the time to show us your work.

So this kit was space age for the time, and it still holds some merit, but the overall fit and such has some issues. I did a little online research and found a couple people that have built it and mentioned fit issues, so working those out first. The big thing was the fit of the firewall, interior tub, and body - fortunately somebody else discovered this so I can fix it now. Here is the body kind of in place. There isn’t a ton of online photos (good ones) of the Ford Cologne V6, but the kit looks relatively correct.

Be cool to see a model of the NX2000! I almost bought one about 5 years ago but it showed all the hard miles teenage boys put on a car like that.

I’m going to throw myself in and use this as motivation for a completion. I’ve really been a fan of this style model and have a few ideas, but for now I’ll be going with AMT Capri II kit. The US version was a 1976 model year, but the Ford Capri II started actual global production in 1974, so I think it would qualify…? The model and the actual 1976 car were released and built in 1975, so meets that portion. Anyhow, here is the kit: I’ve some work cut out for me as these mid 70 AMT kits are neat but finicky.

It does look well done so far. The radiators are a cool touch also on a curbside - the one under the hood (intercooloer?) that you can catch a glimpse of through the hood vents? Cool.

The Official EBay Discussion Thread
Erik Smith replied to iamsuperdan's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Wow. This is actually really disappointing and infuriating. I sold about $5000 on eBay last year. It should be a tax write off for how much it probably cost me to buy (including paying taxes on!), store, list, sell, and ship. I know it’s zero profit and then some. Guess my congresswoman will be hearing from me… -
Another cool CWB. I will be watching and probably tinkering, and if I actually think I can complete something, I’ll throw it in. For now just a spectator! I really like the P2P cars.

Rare Kits... prices.
Erik Smith replied to Brutalform's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
You can see who else is bidding on the item. Sometimes there will be a bidder with a large number of retracted bids, or lots of bids and very few, if any, purchases. These can be signs of shill bidding by either the seller or an accomplice - or not. Sometimes there are people that are just not good people and bid on items and then don’t pay. Then the seller is forced to relist the item. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.instructables.com/Introduction-Detecting-Shill-Bidding-on-EBay/%3famp_page=true -
Unhappy with chrome results...is it me?
Erik Smith replied to GoodbuildNY's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Sad thing is, some people would probably rave about how good that chrome looks. People have different standards. Some are very low. -
I really appreciate all the feedback and critical eye on this subject. I am not at all familiar with the 550, so being able to see some of things through other eyes is great. Looking over the USCP product closer, it definitely has some funky lines. Some angles make them much more evident - I am thinking it is the rear fenders and the slope of the "trunk" lid. The very rear of the kit also appears to be a little too abrupt. As seen in some of Randy's photos above, it comes close at some angles. I will build it as is and try to focus the photographs of the better angles of the kit. That Fernando Pinto kit looks very well proportioned.
-
I don’t think so. I’m not questioning any accuracy or proportions, I’m just asking about finished quality. I have resin and 3D printed parts and they do not look like the parts in the photos above. Here is a resin engine kit from USCP, as delivered (photo of actual item): and a 3D printed engine from Mad Mike’s: I will let the parts speak for themselves.

Can anybody post photos of items they actually have and not reposts of eBay listings? I have looked at his items on eBay but decided against them because of the amount of pinholes, layers, and general uncleanliness readily apparent in the photos. Here are a few direct from listings:
