Sources of Plastic for Testing Paint
MrObsessive replied to Miatatom's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
David you could do that, but I haven't had to deal with that ever since I started using it years ago. Pretty much straight out of the can after mixing it up and then putting it on with my Crescendo airbrush using the heavier tip. Thanks for the compliment on the Viper! ? -
Somewhere along the line I saw pics of what the '89 model was to look like. It would have been a VERY sharp and distinct car for the time and was to get GM's Quad 4 dual cam engine which would have been a big shot in the arm for the Fiero. Other factors were at play too as far as the car's demise, but there was some jealousy from Chevy in where the Fiero was going. And wouldn't you know it...........now the Corvette has gone mid engine albeit over 30 years later!

I built the Fiero kit when they first came out for '84. Very nice detail for the time, but I did a rather poor job of building it as I had nowhere the skills of building as I do now. I wanted to buy a 1:1 brand new in '86, but just did NOT like the huge "B" pillar right in my peripheral vision because I needed the seat as far back as it would go. Yes, they're meant for shorter folks and anyone over 6ft, can be in for difficulties as far as ergonomics with that car. It took me a while to figure out why the shifter was so high in the Fiero. The major reason is because right below the shifter in what would normally be the driveshaft tunnel in a front engine/RWD car is the gas tank in the Fiero. Kinda makes sense as the front and rear ends are too short to hold a decent gas tank and probably the safest place to have the tank as you don't have to worry about having even a side impact rupturing the tank. I thought it rather awkward too however when I was test driving that '86 SE model. The price I thought was rather steep for the time (over 11K), so I went and saved a TON of money and bought that '69 AMX instead. Much faster car of course and best of all...............NO payments!

2020 Round2 Car Kit News & Announcements
MrObsessive replied to Casey's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
I'd like to see this one back on the shelves in the not too distant future. I have the original issue, but the body has a slight warp to it as well as the removable top. These can go for big $$$$ on the 'Bay so a reissue sure would be nice. -
This is the first I've seen of this one! Shape looks "OK" overall, but there's something wonky about the front fenders. ? Just the same, I've got the Trumpeter kit with pretty much all the aftermarket bells and whistles. God only knows when I'd ever get to building that one.

I'll keep that in mind, but resin casting is not my forté. I tried resting casting something when I was working on the Green Hornet and it turned out terrible. I was using one of those hobby starter resin casting kits. I guess I didn't have the mixture right or something as I couldn't get it to turn out right at all.

Mine are still packed away in boxes due to moving and with the smaller place a number of them may stay that way. Here's just a sample of what I have with past pics.............. I don't mind diecasts if they look correct and they're at a reasonable price. The 1/12 Danbury Mints you see (I have the 1964½ Mustang convertible and '57 Corvette also) can be REALLY EXPEN$IVE but deals can be had if one is willing to look and wait. And lets face it............there's just some things in diecast that will NEVER be done in plastic so I see them as a great alternative.

Anyone Getting Ready For Winter?
MrObsessive replied to OldTrucker's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I'll be OK with winter as long as we don't get another one like this! That was from 2016 and frankly it could never snow again and that would be fine with me! -
No doubt! The model was originally missing the hood and I was able to get a resin one from Don and Carol. Not long ago I was watching an auction on the 'Bay of an original kit hood and the auction ended up at something like 50 bucks! Crazy! The seats can go for a good chunk of change also which is why I'll probably end up scratchbuilding those when the time comes. I don't care for the molded in seat belts anyway.

Sources of Plastic for Testing Paint
MrObsessive replied to Miatatom's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
This here...........GOOD stuff for any plastic. Put on dusting of primer coat and then put on the BIN Zinnser. Prime again with your choice of color and NO issue with bleed through or crazed plastic. You'd need an airbrush though.........no thinning is needed if mixed thoroughly in the can. I did this Viper using the sealer as that was one of the kits that had an issue with "soft" plastic. -
Sources of Plastic for Testing Paint
MrObsessive replied to Miatatom's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Incompatibility issues with today's plastics is yet another reason I'm a big believer in putting some kind of barrier coat over the plastic BEFORE painting. Particularly since the mid '00's, there's been a definite change in the plastic in regards to how they react to even model paint let along automotive ones. It's a bit more work, but a long standing pet peeve of mine is doing entire paint jobs over again. -
I got a junker MPC '68 Coronet Convertible that needs just a few parts to be complete. Namely the front seats. Those were one of the items that I meant to get from Don and Carol before they closed up shop, but forgot all about it. Each time I see them turn up on eBay, I get outbid so I'm at a point if I can't get the originals (or resin), I'll scratchbuild them using the '69 Daytona interior as a starting point. Mostly, I'll use AMT's '68 Road Runner for the mechanical stuff, as to me that's MUCH better detailed than the MPC kit. On the subject of demand, while eBay can't always be used as a barometer of how something's going to sell, the fact that I see folks ALWAYS going after these no matter what shape they're in, tells me there's still interest in these quite a bit.

Anyone Getting Ready For Winter?
MrObsessive replied to OldTrucker's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Having just moved very recently, I'll have more than enough to keep me busy throughout the winter! The house I just got I'll say needs some TLC, not so much on the outside, but certainly inside. Hopefully before too long I can get back to that '55 Ford that I was working on before it got packed away. Either which way, the new place has a model room that I set up and can build in and due to a nasty flood experience I had at the last place, VERY LITTLE will go into the basement as this house literally sits along the river. I can see the Susquehanna right out my back kitchen window. -
Sorry I wasn't able to make the show. I literally just moved the week before and to say it's been difficult would be an understatement. I don't know who lived here before, but anything that could go wrong with the house did, chief of which was the plumbing. All the models are packed away anyway, so it would have been a real task to dig out which ones I wanted to take as I have no idea now which box they're in. Looks like it was a great show and I had even took time off work way in advance in anticipation of going, but the moving ordeal and other difficulties were just too much.

Any NEW kits ?
MrObsessive replied to Greg Myers's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I sure hope one of them is a '69 Pontiac Trans Am Tim! I've been wanting someone to do a GOOD kit of that for some time now. I can make one out of the Revell '69 Camaro and MPC one, but you just know as soon as I attempt it, a kit will be announced! -
Ray, that is very, very NICE! I guess I'm not exactly a "youngster", but I've never heard of this show till you mentioned it! Very clean work and yes, I actually like this "slim body" Cobra a bit better than the later 427 ones. Whitewalls are a very nice touch also................so '60's!

Eaglemoss 1/8 Mercedes 300 Gullwing
MrObsessive replied to 69H.O.Firebird's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Just looked this up on the 'net and all I can say is WOW!! ? Terrific looking engine and this one is DEFINITELY high on my wish list! I'm in the middle of moving to a new house, so after the dust settles, I'm going to see about getting a subscription to this one. Gotta get going more on that 1/8 '67 Shelby though..........haven't done a thing to it in quite some time as I've been just waaay too busy with getting the new place and then of course I'm taking literally a hobby shop with me! ? -
GOOD job on this so far as I'll be following along! I grew up around Studies particularly the finned Hawks so this has my attention! Studebaker gets no credit for this, but those Loewy designed coupes were arguable the first of what would be called a "personal car". The early two seat T-Birds took the credit for that as they were not "sports cars" in the strictest sense, but Studebaker had them beat by a couple years. It sure would be nice to see some newly tooled later Hawks such as the finned '57-'61 cars as well as the '62-'64's.

What Cars Do You Like Every Year Of?
MrObsessive replied to JollySipper's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
ALL of GM's 1973-77 Colonnade cars. ALL models including the Grand Prix and Monte Carlo. IMO not an ugly one in the bunch.......big bumpers notwithstanding from '74 on. VERY underrated as far as models and to some degree in the 1:1 world but that is changing quickly. -
New1:1 Toy 1955 Oldsmobile Super 88...
MrObsessive replied to kitbash1's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Wow......she's GORGEOUS!! Reminds me a lot of my Great Grandmother's '54 Buick (Special?) which had the same roofline. Hers was two-toned red and black however. -
Welcome Aboard Tim! ?
