Revell Germany 1/24 Ferrari 250GTO for 2013
IMSANUT replied to larrygre's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Amen on the BMW 2002 tii. I have never understood how this important car has never been done in 1/24th or 1/25th. Sometimes I just shake my head in confusion................. -
Outstanding!!! I love these old race cars. Makes me need to look for the kit!!

Weird topic I guess, but I was excited it existed. This is a review of the Scale Auto Audi R8 R racing slot car body that I'll be using to convert the ROG Audi R8 into it's road racing counterpart. First photo is of the body kit's contents: The kit contains all the pieces needed for a VERY accurate body. Options are different styles of side view mirrors and steering wheels. There is also a proper racing induction set up and rear filler piece, wheel inserts, photo etch parts for the grills, very thin VERY clear windows, a good start for the roll cage, and proper racing dash. There is also a vac formed interior bucket that is too shallow for a static build. Next are three views of the body pieces installed but not glued of course: The quality of the pieces is very good. The slot body will fit nicely on the ROG chassis and interior with simple trimming to the slot body's internal mounting posts. The Induction piece will replace the kit's example, and the filler panel that goes round the engine will work very well also. The R)G chassis will have to be widened slightly between the wheel wells, and the kit's rear diffuser section, part of the chassis, will need to be removed to allow the slot bodies diffuser section to work. Over all, for anyone contemplating a build of this way cool racing version of the Audi R8, it simplifies the job greatly. I paid $39.95 from a local slot car shop. Patto's decals in Australia offers several sheets for Euro versions, but sadly no Grand Am decals yet. Mine will end up a phantom Champion Audi version using various decals from the ROG Porsche GT1 and Le Mans Miniatures Audi decal sheets. This is the fourth body I have purchased from Scale Auto's selection, and I have been extremely pleased with each. They are highly recommended to anyone interested in current road racing cars.

I am saddened to hear this. I too saw the recent Ebay listings, and was bidding on both of the 1/24th lots. I never managed to get any of his bodies for static builds. Now it seems, I never will.

Are We Model Hoarders?
IMSANUT replied to mrmike's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Um, yes. As my work career has changed and the kids grew, I found I had little time for the pleasure of building. This, however did not curb my appetite to buy more kits. Now that I find I have more tme on my hands, I have begun the process of deciding what I actually want to keep, because at 55 I'll never finish what I have let alone what I actually want to build. I have no real idea the current count, but 300-400 is not too far off the mark...... -
Does anyone know if Resilient Resins is still in business?

Very good point on the TA cars. Perhaps the reason being, is that all of them save perhaps the Cougar, require flared wheel arches. Some os these are very subtle. Others like the 70 1/2 Camaro and the 70 Firebird are not so subtle. I'd love it if they would do a TA version of the excellent Revell 88 Firebird. That would require no body mods. Same with a TA version of the 67/68 Camaro and Mustang, though the latter would have to be a coupe. Now that we're talking about racing vehicles, how about a proper full detail 1/24th Lola T70 and Chaparral 2E? The old IMC kits are great, but are in the wrong scale, no longer available and very fiddly to build. And there are a host of Ferrari's that need proper versions to replace curbside or questionable versions such as the Protar GTO. And Lotus......11, 23, 30, 40, racing version of the Esprit S300. That one I never understood why Revellogram never did. It would be very easy to convert the kit that was available to the IMSA Bridgestone Potenza Super car, roll cage, seat, decals....... But I am slightly off topic with that one.

All of the kits, the three Roush GTO cars, and the three T/A cars, as well as the two Camaro T/A cars are mostly the same inside the box. All feature a great small block Ford engine, a good representation of the Bob Riley designed chassis, and very complete markings. The GTO trio differ only in that the Folgers car has an earlier style rear spoiler, and all three feature an opening rear hatch, though they are also sometimes warped. The three Mustang T/A kits are all the same with newer bodies and chassis extensions to widen the chassis to match the wider body width. Also featured are newer headers and exhausts exiting both sides of the car. The two Camaro T/A kits of course feature Camaro bodies, but also feature later style BBS rims. It has a Ford Motor though. All that said, all of the kits have a bad history of warped chassis plates. These flatten out fine if you take care in assembling the frame sides and other parts of the roll cage carefully. One note of interest, the T'A cars should have the center of the chassis plate from infront of the engine to the rear end opened up between the fram members. The SCCA required this to be open as it would be on a street car. IMSA did not require this. A couple of interesting asides regarding these kits. As mentioned, the chassis was designed by Bob Kiley of Riely and Scott fame. It appeared under many a race car. From the cars represented in these kits, to the trans kit mentioned, a Mekur, Olds Cutlas, Mercury Cougar, Buick Sommerset, and the Kemp Cobra Mustang II. I believe it also served as the chassis for the wideb body Quick Greenwood Corvettes. Skins offered the IMSA Olds Aurora as a trans kit for any of the T/A kits. It is a wonderful transkit. I hope that they re introduce it now that they have teamed up with M&S hobbies. There was also a later era Mustang body and a Jaguar body with updated roll cages available. Any of these kits build into a wonderful replica, but it is not a simple build.

Where to get a kit box shrink wrapped?
IMSANUT replied to Ben's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
There is another issue to consider here. Shrink wrap continues to shrink over time. It's power can be surprising too. We've all seen photos of vintage kits where the top is bowed in.....that's do to the plastic shrink skin continuing to shrink. So, any of you who still listen to LP records, and MAY still have shrink wrap on it slit to allow the record out.....remove the wrap or your precious lp WILL WARP. -
What's the story behind your user name/avatar?
IMSANUT replied to JollySipper's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
I am a huge fan of the IMSA road racing series, so the name is obvious. The avatar requires a bit more explanation. I AM A Union Electrician by trade, so the photo is amusing to me in that you cannot plug a plug into a plug.... Plus, I am a die hard lefty.....the republican party is filled with bafoons in my opinion, so the elephant trying to plug a plug into a plug works for me.....! -
This topic is something I kinda live in real 1-1. I have always looked at cars from a tool perspective. Thus, I already have a goofly portion of the five I'd need to make this list. They are, in no particular order: Dodge Ram 2500 pick up. I've got to have some thing for around the home / yard projects that require the moving of large and or dirty items. Dodge Grand Caravan. Perfect for family vacations. Porsche 944. Got to have a sports car! This one is one of the best handling cars ever made, looks great, is built like a tank, and gives good mileage when traveling the interstate. Now for the ones I don't have to complete the list of five. Volkswagen R32. The perfect golf. All wheel drive and an amazing V6. Perfect for the Dan Ryan in Chicago in any weather!! Last but certainly not least..... the wife should have a daily driver that is fun. For her, my choice is a Mini Cooper S. Yeah, I could live with these for the rest of my life.

Very nice mini/ The color combo is great!. You can see my Mini SCCA build under road racers in the Under Glass section.

Thank you . The cage needs further work, as it id a bit too tall. I also have to modify the drivers side protection bars to move them into the door opening for more room. I hope to do some work on it this week.

Superb build! Very clean. IIFC, the Beetle Disney used for the racing bits of the original Love Bug had just this engine swap. I've been toying with that thought for a while now.....
