1999 Chevy Silverado
oldcarfan replied to crazyjim's topic in Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
Really nice!! -
Some people see shipping as extra profit. I bid on a Porsche 911 last year and didn't notice the shipping. The kit was at $11.00. He had shipping set at $20 just for regular post. Luckily someone out bid me.

anyone ever build a CHINOOK
oldcarfan replied to bubbaman's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Motorhome? My dad built a Chinook and a Sunrader using the old Revell Toyota Truck snap fit for the cab. That was years ago and I have no idea what happened to them. No kit was ever made. If you want to scratch one, use any of the Toyota, Datsun or Nissan trucks for the cab and chassis and the rest shouldn't be too hard to make from sheet stock. That's how my dad it. -
I'm going to finish one this time. Probably!
oldcarfan replied to oldcarfan's topic in WIP: Model Cars
I finished the car this afternoon and took a couple of pictures. http://i1342.photobucket.com/albums/o767/garyb11/volvoFinished_zps2ngvbynd.png] A little while later I started working on a few final details and some driving lights and a roof rack with cargo. This is what I was aiming for. Anyone want to guess what happened next? RIP Volvo! I found most of the body parts except the grille, headlights and a few other parts. Back in the box. Maybe some day I'll find the rest of the parts..... Technically, I finished one for the new year. -
This is very nice! Have you done a how-to? What kind of chassis, any special details, that sort of thing? Would make an interesting thread..

Sorry, this should have been in On The Workbench. I can't figure out how to move it. -
I love European cars so I will be getting the E30 and this Volvo.

Offbeat Places You Have Purchased Model Kits?
oldcarfan replied to Casey's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I found some at a small convenience store, also a book store that just closed a couple months ago had a small selection of mostly model car kits and a decent amount of building supplies. -
Sometimes it feels like I have almost as many unfinished kits as I do new in the box kits. I am through with my Master's classes, my work schedule has eased up and I need to do something. So for the new year I'm going to try to actually follow through with one. Here is my first victim for the New Year... I've had it since 1997, still in the box. I was planning to build it box stock, but I'm thinking of doing something like this for a change of pace. Nothing that I can't reverse if I ever want it stock and probably with better paint than the ratty 242 pictured here, but something along these lines.

This is one of the kits that I keep picking up to buy then put back. I received one of these from my grandma when I was little, so I want one to build just for nostalgia's sake. At the same time, I have so many kits that I haven't built..... First world problems and all that.

How about a NASCAR building tips topic!
oldcarfan replied to yellowsportwagon's topic in WIP: NASCAR
Stance is a big part of it. A lot of them were lowered in the front to add a little streamlining. From the 60s on most cars had at least the front wheel wells modified. Also look at the way things are blended. Bumpers often were tucked in closer to the body with aluminum fairings to smooth them to the body, sometimes they were sectioned so that they didn't stick out side to side as much as the street car. Google is your friend. Find everything you can on the car. If there isn't much on a particular car, maybe look at other similar cars to see how they were put together. -
Yep, it's not the same without the hat! Have fun with it!

I love this project!

oldcarfan replied to mike s's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
You've kind of dropped a bomb on us all! LOL! Everyone is going to want details. I'll start with this; Is that how it looked coming right out of the printer? Really nice. -
Any opinions on the Monogram Countach?
oldcarfan replied to oldcarfan's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
From the newest box art, it looks almost like they are using the Radial T/As that Monogram used to put with all there hot rod kits! I hope not. LOL -
I just saw a reissue of the old Monogram Countach at HobbyTown. I didn't find a review or a finished build up of it. I assume it is a typical 80s Monogram style kit. I'm thinking of doing one as a fiberglass kit car, sort of a kit car kit! I'm not looking for a super detailed kit, just a fun builder. From the box art, the only obvious issue is the regular issue Monogram tires that are both too tall and too narrow for a Countach. I'm thinking a set of Pegasus or Aoshima tires and wheels might be a good option. If anyone has built one of these, I sure would be interested in your opinions.

Terrible Kits You Love!
oldcarfan replied to Chuck Most's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
No, just the regular one. -
I just went through your albums. You really have built some beautiful models this year!
-
Depends on how detailed you want to get. If it's a curbside, it's much easier to do. You can redrill holes and put the axles up higher. A good website for 1:1 inspiration is StanceWorks.com.

Terrible Kits You Love!
oldcarfan replied to Chuck Most's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I just got one of the old Testors 1980 Firebirds. Not a lot of detail, but it brings back memories. -
I wrote to Monogram a while ago and got a nice history on this line of kits from the guy that designed them. I urged them to re-release them. Maybe they will, the RX-7 is coming out soon and if it sells well, here's hoping the release the whole line again!

Looks really good! Anyone know the significance of the back door being a different color? Just wondering..
