Whatever Happened To....
1972coronet replied to Snake45's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I *believe* that the MPC 1971 Road Runner (last reissued in 1987 , and lasting-through c.1991) was "compromised" in c.1995 via a tooling modification to recreate the Petty 1971 Stock Car... ...but , it never materialised . I , too , seem to remember the MPC 1970 GTO being around as "recently" as 1986 , 1987 . The 1972 was reissued in 1988 ---- perhaps its fate was similar to that of the 1971 Road Runner ? I'd like to believe that if the 1971 R.R. tooling existed , that Round2 would reissue it (and , pipe dream , with the 1972 parts included) . -
Earthquakes are the bane of the Pacific Plates' regions ; I've physically-survived : 1971 Sylmar ; 1987 Whittier ; 1994 Northridge . 2020 can sod-off ! Now , back to our regularly-scheduelled programme .

I wonder how much that one-quarter-scale Slant Six would retail for these days , assuming that all of its major components are "there" ? I could see a limited run of that engine ( maybe 500 or so copies ) , as it doesn't have the broad appeal to most (except for us Gen-X and older folks ) . Maybe a "stripped-down" version of it would sell better ? In theory its retail price could be lower since its contents would ostensibly be lesser than its full-regalia counterpart .

How fun is that ! Wonderful idea and execution , Michelle ! Star Trek ( 1966-1968 ) has long been one of my favourite T.V. programmes . I'm worth a million in prizes With my torture film Drive a G.T.O Wear a uniform All on a government loan

Have fun with that bad boy ! I started building one --- started being the operative word here --- back in late September 1987 . I'd painted it Testors Italian Red (no clear coat) then started on its engine (421 or 428 cube , not certain ) . While I was letting that Testors enamel dry ( took forever back then ; even longer these days ) after its gasses flashed , the 1987 Whittier Earthquake hit ( Thursday , 01-OCT-1987 at 0742 HRS ) . The body , and the black '70 SS-454 Chevelle which was also drying , was flattened by falling debris ( 95% of my collection was destroyed ) . To make matters worse , it was the Prestige Series version of the kit , which at that time was a $8.00 kit ( versus $5.00 for a regular kit ) . Now I get to live vicariously through your build of a fine kit . Enjoy ! Mæ'r Ddraig Goch yn Drech na'r Ddraig Wen !

A four door with a 351-W ? Seems to me like someone was influenced by the Gapp & Rousch Tijuana Taxi Pro Stock ! That happens to be one of my all-time favourite Pro Stock cars ---- a scale replica of that car would be sweet ! -

I set my 'max bid' at $100.00 and figured , If I get it , I get . I'm not going to lay-out any more than a 'note . After reading the thread (posted here by Casey) , and after further investigation , I'm surprised that I got it so relatively-cheap . It's not 100% complete ; no decals , which don't matter to me anyhow as they'd be as old as me , and just about as worthless . One of the slicks has its halves glued-together (properly at least) , which , again , is no big deal . Tattered-but-together box ( again , no biggie ... I'm planning to build it , not put it on a shelf for archeologists to find it in the year 3,000 . For having grown up in a city with a few Ford dealerships (and a couple of Lincoln-Mercury dealerships) around , I honestly don't recall having seeing any modified Mavericks or Comets around --- not even Show Pipes ( functioning side-exit exhaust has long been illegal in California due to Noise Pollution Laws... not that that stopped anybody ! ) . I remember quite a few LUV pickups , Vega's , Monza's , Pinto's , and Couriers around , in addition to the usual Chevelle's , Camaro's , Firebirds , Chargers , Darts , Dusters , Mustangs , etc. , etc. , ...and a number of AMC's . -

Cool info @marc ---- stands to reason that the first-run would be a rare piece , especially considering that it's a mid-late-year intro . I'd read-through that thread @Casey ; very informative ! I may as well let the cat out of the bag here : I'm the proud owner of said 1971 Comet ( ? ) ! Been wanting one for better than 30 years , and since I had the funds --- I gave $83.00 for it ---- I'd figured , Why not ? I'm planning a stock build (okay , maybe aftermarket wheels and maybe tyres ) some day . The awesome BOSS 429 will either end up in another project or be up for trade here . It's nice to have a Jo-Han kits that's not covered with flash ! Thanks to everyone whom participated . -

You won't be around for the long-awaited 1968 Coronet release ! I know that you've been championing its cause for some time... Okay , now to be serious ( ? ) . I've taken a few sabbaticals over the years ( 1990-1992 ; 1996-2002 ; 2005-2010 ) ; sometimes due to (clinical) depression ; others just because I lost interest , and ; lastly due to my mum passing away . If I lived closer to Bakersfield (which is really only 6 inches away , according to my map ) , I'd cruise-up there and peruse your inventory , sling the _____ , and wish you well ---- I can only do the latter . Take care , man . Maybe we'll see you around here again some day . -

This is the single version of Old John Robertson from the Younger Than Yesterday sessions (1966) : ... and the album mix from Notorious Byrd Brothers (1967 ) , which truly "just" a remix consisting of panning , phasing , and Moog synthesiser tweaking : -

Not to mention that he was the Ghost of Christmas Past ( cab driver ) in Scrooged . Are you a fan of The Velvet Underground ? -
I recently followed a Jo-Han Mercury Comet on eBay ; and , I noticed that it was a 2-in-1 , which I've never seen before ! I'm aware of the Maverick 2-in-1 kit , but wasn't aware of its Mercury counterpart . Is this a rare kit ? Was it a mid-year tooling change ( think : MPC 1971 Duster and 1971 Demon 340 --- the latter being a c.Spring 1971 intro ) ? From the photos , I was able to ascertain : - Stock inline six engine / manual trans - Stock wheel covers - Moulded-in bench seat (front and rear ) - Plastic Good Year wrinkle-wall slicks - Cragar S/S wheels - BOSS 429 in Pro Stock livery - Chassis has moulded-on single exhaust Did anyone here win the bid ? I'd love to build a stock 1971 Mercury Comet !

I can only imagine how insane they must've sounded back in '73 ( I was only 3 --- didn't hear them until 1985 when I was in high school ) . I love that first Dolls album ; however , I enjoy Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers more . Vietnamese Baby is a blast ! -

I'm not stating that the reviews are lame-in-content ; I'm simply comparing them to how they were during the golden era (e.g. , photos accompanying the review... not just the text-only format that S.A.E. went to by c.2002) . Then , intermix a grip of ads within the reviews , and it's A.D.D. madness ! I couldn't concentrate on the reviews because the freakin' ads shared the same format and text . It's not meant to be an ad hom. attack . Kudos to you and everyone else whom have contributed the reviews . -
Redlines went the way of high-button shoes by 1969 ( the last year that Chrysler used them ; AMC as well , IIRC ) . They are "incorrect" on any 1970 & later stock vehicle , being akin to Wide Whites on a vehicle built after 1961 . Raised White Letters tyres were the newest thing (white walls continued as well ) by '69 - '70 .

The glory days of S.A.E. were in the 80's - late 90's . I'll never forget my first issue ; the one featuring @tim boyd's 'F-100 Comparo' . That issue cemented my enjoyment of the magazine and its fantastic content , having subscribed to it in late 1985 (and having purchased a few back-issues) . I haven't bought an issue of S.A.E. since 2007 (and even then , I bought it only because of Boyd's build of the MPC 1972 Road Runner) , unless one counts the bought-with-a-gift-card issue which featured the Revell 1970 Hemi 'Cuda ( by @cruz , if I remember ) . So-so articles... laden with freakin' ads... minimal content... lame-o "reviews" of new kits... No , thanks . I'm tactile --- most of us were raised in the age of holding reading materials in our hands . It's too bad that both physical magazines and online "can't" coexist . Let's just wait until that last Gen-Xer dies before everything goes the the 'net , thank you . I feel like it's almost a conspiracy ; a conspiracy to hasten the end of written word (a reversion to the Preliterate Ages) . The way that corpoRATations operate these days , not just subsidiaries of corporations (e.g. , Ostrich Egg Fancier & Spotter's Guide , a subsidiary of Buzz Cola , a family of NFL potato chips ) , this doesn't surprise me . -

Johnny Thunders solo album (1978) version of Subway Train . Originally on the New York Dolls first album (1973) ; Thunders' version is "How it's supposed to sound" according to ol' Thunders himself . -

Beautiful --- your touches really brought it home ! I especially like the paint treatment on the wheel covers ; made a huge difference on a wonderfully-preserved time capsule . -
The effect certainly works . It's not very often that someone goes through the added effort to replicate the undercoating ( or , "blackout" in some instances ) in those areas , especially on the radiator core support .

Funny , as my thought upon seeing this (fantastic) build was , That car would looks awesome in green with a beige interior !

Nice BS23H0 , Tim ! EB5 with black interior ; excellent choice . I recognise black primer on the underside --- must've been built in Los Angeles ?
