Divided by a common tongue
1972coronet replied to DonW's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Someone who's familiar with the German language will certainly correct me here : in German (or Germanic languages) , the "c" is pronounced like a "c" and / or "s" . A "hard-c" in German is actually a "k" ( think : "Kompressor" vs. "Compressor") . The "hard-c" is Latin-based , if I remember correctly ; that's how the Celts pronounce the non-existent-in-Celtic-languages "k" . Then there's the Français character "Ç" , which has an "s/c" sound to it ; like a "soft-c" with an "s" combined-in . So , basically , I've always heard "mer-say-dees" , including from those whose native language is German . Don't get me going on the pronunciation of 'Celtic' , and how it's incorrectly pronounced by practically everybody ... -

Divided by a common tongue
1972coronet replied to DonW's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I'm of Welsh , Scots , and Irish descent , born and raised in the U.S. Regarding the Welsh ( Cymræg ) language : it's heavily-based in Old Latin , with a dash of Norse mixed-in . Same goes for Scots Gælic and Irish Gælic , with regional dialects and variations (same as any language) . Here's how the Cymræg and Gælic alphabet appear : -

Apparently , Chrysler got it backwards : 1968 = Side Marker Lamps 1969 = Side Marker Reflectors Someone at Chrysler misread the edict which read ( to paraphrase ) "1969 models must have side markers which also have reflectors " believing that 1969 models' side markers only had to reflect --- they missed the "...and illuminate" part . So , while the side markers from 1969 models look like their 1970-1971 relatives , they do not interchange one bit .
-
Mr. Mike made the 1968 marker lamps / bezels out of pins , and the finished product looks amazing ! The 1969 reflectors ( they did not illuminate ) would be tougher to replicate ; they are , indeed , recessed .

It's such a gorgeous representation of a 'what-could-have-been' engine . Some decades back , Tim Boyd built a phantom 1971 Super Bird (the 1971-come-1987-reissue MPC annual of the Road Runner) with that DOHC engine , and it was spectacular .
-
I agree with Wayne's ( DEL ) assessment completely ---- definitely a masterpiece ! That ridiculous A/C compressor (all Fo-Mo-Co cars had 'em back then !) is a work of art in its self . Kudos , Jason ! [ Side Note : Which engine is the kit's engine supposed to represent ? 351-M ? 400 ? 460 ? ]

MOPAR Engine Paint Colors
1972coronet replied to afx's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
The air cleaner housings of 1969-1972 Ramcharger (Dodge) / Air Grabber (Plymouth) , and 1972-early 1975 High Performance engines was called 'Air Cleaner Orange' . Probably undetectable in-scale , but it is a different shade of orange never-the-less . 1969 340 engines are a "moving target" in regard to their colour : some early production 340s were Engine Red ; most were Turquoise ; and some late production 340s were Engine Orange . 1971 340 engines were Engine Orange until spring 1971 (c.May 1971) when they were painted "1972 Blue" . Their air cleaners remained black . 1971 & earlier blue was more of a grey-blue than the 1972 - 1983 blue . 383s in 325hp and 330hp guise were blue ; many 1970 Barracuda and Gran Coupe with the 330hp 383 are incorrectly painted orange . -
RE : 1966 El Camino : How about an L-79 instead of the kit's 396 ? There was no such an animal as a Super Sport El Camino until '68 (hence , the flat bonnet on the Revell kit) , so an L-79 would be perfect . The engine from the AMT '66 Nova / Jenkins' Grumpy's Toy would be quite right in that El's boiler room ( oil pan is different ; the sump had to be swapped to fit that 360hp small block into the X-Body Nova) .
-
I agree with the consensus regarding the toy-like proportions of the Monogram 1956 Chevy , and how you've managed to detract from those abhorrent proportions by modifying the heck out of that kit ! Let me be another one who says , Best looking Monogram '56 Chevy I've ever seen !

He was also a huge fan of Punk , at one point stating that The Stooges Fun House (1970) was his favourite album .

" Foil Transfer " : What am I doing Wrong ?

Thanks much for the help , directions , and pointers , Ray and Joe ! Joe , you're right about that syringe-type epoxy . More than likely , I the ratio was never correct (on my part) . I'm a cheap-o Celt , so I was trying to use as little as possible out of that epoxy syringe ( hahaha ) . I'll have to give the CA with an accelerator ( "Kicker" , right ? ) a go . I'm in no rush ; just want to make sure that I have a grip of foil-impression copies of the 'Duster' emblems from the MPC 1973-1975 Duster glue bombs I've acquired . Thanks again , gentlemen -
Where did you get yours ? The LHS keeps telling me that it's not going to be available until July ! I preordered 4 of them with a prepaid gift card that was part of a preheated oven that I bought on a preposition . Well , it looks like Lindbug went with that stupid 1/20 scale again !

AMT's 1975 Duster
1972coronet replied to iamsuperdan's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Be aware that this kit --- even its restored-reissue from c.2013 --- can't be built 100% stock ; here's why : 1.) Engine is an (under-scale) 340 2.) Manual trans with automatic console and "approximate" stock shifter ( console / manual combo was dropped after 1969 for Dodge & Plymouth A-bodies ) 3.) No brake master cylinder at all ( raid the parts box ) . 4.) The aforementioned lack of stock dual exhaust Another item which needs to be addressed if the kit's chassis is used : the wheelbase is off from side-to-side ( ! ) . This is likely the result of "core-shift" from ancient tooling ; my original , 1971-issue , 1972 Duster annual's wheelbase is correct (and includes the torsion bars --- those were removed during the 1973 annual tooling update , likely as a concession to the then-new 426 Pro Stock Hemi addition) . -
" Foil Transfer " : What am I doing Wrong ?
1972coronet replied to 1972coronet's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
"Hot" and "Cold" refer to the amount of catalyst added to the base ; either more-than-recommended (hot) or less-than-recommended (cold) . Those are usually performed after the recommended ratio doesn't work ; that segues to the next answer : no , the epoxy doesn't want to set . I put just enough epoxy into the backside of the impression to fill it without overfilling (e.g. , I dip a toothpick into the mix and let the epoxy flow-into the depression . Doesn't take much to fill those 25th scale Duster impressions ) . What I always end up with is something destined for the trash . No , I haven't any accompanying photos . -
For more than 30 years , I've been reading about and seeing results of aluminium foil ( Reynolds Wrap , et al. ) emblem transfers , and I'm yet to have any success in making my own ! What am I doing wrong ? I make the impression , fill its backside with epoxy ( mixed "hot" and "cold" --- doesn't seem to matter ) , and wait ... ... and end up with trash ! What's the secret ? Is there a specific epoxy ? Super Glue ?
-
You could source the engine from the AMT 1971 Duster ( 340 and 360 look similar , especially in-scale ) , a resin LoadFlite ( the truck line name for the TorqueFlite ) or the one from the AMT 1971 Charger R/T . The engine / trans in the Little Red Express kit is completely incorrect , as it represents a "generic" Chrysler big block backed by a manual trans .

Favorite Obscure or Discovered Music Album
1972coronet replied to afx's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
Such a splendid album , through-and-through . While it was released in 1967 , it regained popularity in 1972 when 'Night In White Satin' (and its outro , 'Late Lament') topped the charts . My fave tracks off of this album are 'Lunch Break / Peak Hour' ( which culminate side one of the album ) . Personally , I love the next album , 'In Search of the Lost Chord' (1968) ---- do yourself a solid and check that one out as well . You'll recognise at least one song on there that received its share of radio play . Truly , one can't go wrong with any of the 1966-1970 Moody Blues albums (their first album was a compilation : 'Go Now' was its de facto title ; it featured other members such as Denny Laine . Most of its songs are from 1964-1966 ) . -
I collect old maps , mostly Thomas Guides . The oldest one that I have is a Los Angeles & Orange Counties 1958 .

Johan prices $$$$
1972coronet replied to NYLIBUD's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Exactly . The street parts were ostensibly an afterthought . While I've never held a Johan Superbird in my hands , a prima fascie examination compels me to agree with the consensus that the 'Han 'Bird proportions are mucho bettero . I first read a review about the Johan 'bird in a 1985 issue of S.A.E. ; this was obviously a review of the USA Oldies release . The reviewer mentioned the kit's colour ; to paraphrase : " molded in turquoise (this week)..." FWIW : There's a "B.I.N." price in 'bay right now for a Johan Superbird / Monogram Superbird combo . I've been following its movement ...
