... but still has the goofy parts as well ; the exact parts as its 1971 predecessor . Too bad that the '72 didn't include a Hemi --- that would have made the Vanke version look closer-to-correct ( excepting , of course , the stock interior and chassis ) .

1/25 AMT '65 Chevy El Camino "Gear Hustler"

A question for the ages , perhaps : why did AMT offer the I-6 only for 1964 ? -
1/25 AMT '65 Chevy El Camino "Gear Hustler"

Didn't the '64 also include an I-6 ? I've seen the wagon with both engines ; not sure if the '64 El Camino was offered the same largesse as its wagon counterpart . Side note : the El Camino wasn't bestowed an official Super Sport designation until the 1968 model year . The 1966 brochures exhibit the buckets & console-equipped 325hp or 360hp 396 / 4 speed on a construction site . -

While this kit has many fine points , it certainly isn't without its ... faults . Some of the faults were / are absolute throwbacks to the MPC-era ( yes , I'm aware this the AMT kit shares nothing with any of the MPC annuals ) , whereas others were ,let's call them "oversights" : - Moulded-on exterior door handles - Moulded-on , clunky-looking wiper arms - Roof is too rounded - 1970 decklid - No PCV valve nor Breather - Disc brake master cylinder with 4-wheel drums - Optional Six Barrel induction is a nice touch ; however , its application is incorrect : in 'real life' the a/c compressor and brackets would not clear the front carburetor ! - Wrong tyre size ( F70-15 ! Small detail , but inaccurate never-the-less ... and an easy fix ) - Absolutely horrible windshield , backlite , and quarter glass ! Too thick and undersized . - One must file the edge of the doortops / quarter glass -- underside the body -- in order to get the interior / chassis assembly to fit properly within the body. In spite of all its faults , it can and does build up nicely ; I've built countless samples of the kit , including the so-called Street Machine version ( which , by the way , offers a non-a/c belt and pulley setup ! ) I'll likely grab another copy of three of this kit , if for nothing else for the sum of its "update & upgrade" parts for the old MPC Duster , Dart Sport , and A-Body Barracuda kits .

I wonder if the tooling was compromised during the 1971 Demon 340 MPC Annual "promise" era of circa 2011 ? There was some conjecture about how Round2 was attempting to do what ERTL did with the 1970 Super Bee in 1990 (1968-1969 Road Runner and GTX chassis , etc. , replacing the antiquated 1968 , ad seq. , MPC chassis platform ) , but with the 1998-issue AMT Duster 340 chassis , engine , platform , etc. , etc. ? I thought that some irreversible "butchery" put the kaibosh on any future releases of either the Duster or the Demon . Who knows ? Maybe Round2 massaged the Duster's body in an attempt to "Demon-ise" it ?

I thought that the shock tower bracing was a handling concession ? If so , then it's no wonder as to why the braces were left-off or removed for straight line racing ... -

An improperly-poured Guinness is sacrilegious ! I haven't enjoyed an adult beverage in a long time ; however , when I did enjoy them , I could always recognise a trash pour --- and summarily reject it . -

My all-time favourite car has been the 1973 Duster . I've owned only one ( 02.Feb.1992 - 12.Sept.1992 ) , and I still miss it to this day . It was TB3 Basin Street Blue , black interior , power disc brakes , power steering , factory-upgrade 727 trans , A/C , etc. , etc. I bought it for 70$ ! Everything worked in that car ; ice cold A/C ; blast furnace heater ; factory AM/FM radio ( I replaced a junk aftermarket AM/FM/Cassette that was in the car when I bought it ) . But , I digress ... Here's some 'stock image' photos of vehicles that I would love to own some day :

As one whom grew-up not too far from Downtown L.A. , I applaud your decision to replicate one of their iconic units ! Some sectors used Unity spot lights , whereas other sectors employed "Alley Lights" (which were mounted to the lightbar) , and yet others had only the "can" lights. Is the interior platform moulded in black ? If so , it'll be the perfect texture and finish to replicate the moulded rubber mats ( e.g. , you don't have to paint them ) . In speaking to a close-to-retirement body man at the Twin Towers Yard / Garage ( Downtown Los Angeles , some twenty years ago ) , he told me , "Those [ Dodge and Plymouth ] units were unbeatable ; just absolute tanks . Their only downside was when I had to replace a quarter panel --- so many extra welds and reinforcements right from the factory ! " But , I digress ... Looking forward to following your build , Mike ! ( P.S. : Don't forget to add a few dings , dents , scrapes , and chipped paint along the way ! ) -

Perhaps it's a 1977-1981 Trans Am piece ? -
I knew that you'd get the reference . When I saw the title of this thread , I immediately defaulted to Walter Lure's band , The Waldos ( Rent Party is quite nice ; recently reissued ) . At the risk of getting this thread locked , I'll stop here . Cool story , by the way .

That's one of my stumbling blocks as well : "just how opaque or translucent is that plastic ?" . I keep thinking that I'll just make it a two tone model --- paint the roof if the black-painted headliner compromises its appearance vs. the main body . Then again , I do have an aerosol can of GY3 Curious Yellow / Citron Yella ready to go (even if it's incorrect for any Chrysler before / after 1971 ...) . I also have a can of TB3 Basin Street Blue / Super Blue ...

That would negate any tooling that's been cut in the last ten-ish years only , right ? The old Monogram moulds and the prior-to-circa-2006 Revell mould "should" be "exempt" from any deals with the devil , no ? -

Let's get them there moulds OUT of China , stat ! Pretty please ! -
Not sure if this kit would qualify as rare , other than its 1972-only issuance : Perhaps its French-Canadian descent ( i.e. , its instruction sheet is en Français et English ) may be a contributor to its (potentially) "rare" status ? Yes , I'm going to build it . I'm at a stalemate for the time being ; I want to add the scoop ( part of the Arlen Vanke version ) , but am leery about *devirginising* that clean bonnet ! Additionally , I'm planning to use the engine / transmission from the 1980 Duster ( small block / TorqueFlite combo ) ; the side pipes from the c.1984 issue of the "Dodge Duster" [sic] , and ; wheels and tyres from the 1969 Trans Am White Lightning ( Spyders wheels ) . I'm also going to polish its plastic , as it's moulded in (close-enough to ) FY1 Lemon Twist .

Any allusion to Ford part numbers on it anywhere ? If it's for a 1955 , it 'should' have a "B5--" on it somewhere ( "B" = 1950's ; "5" = 1955 ) .

As a visual artist , I can tell you what's wrong with this : not enough contrast ( e.g. , an almost total absence of black , white , and grey ) ! I love how practically every era is typified and made to be so generic , and the sixties are no exception . This kit's ( atrocious ) box art is ostensibly a period piece ( c.1969 ) , in an attempt to capitalise on the psychedelic art of the time ( Peter Max , et al. ) . Heck , even by '69 , psychedelic showbills ( posters for bands and venues ) were on their way out ! "Raw Power has a son named Rock & Roll ... "

Cool , man ! My guess as to its V.I.N. wasn't far off ; just curious about its assembly plant now ( "1" = Lynch Rd. ; "2" = Hamtramck ; "5" = Los Angeles ; "7" = St. Louis ) . Those 1968 & earlier fender tags are too esoteric for me .
