Hobby Lobby re-opening
Tom Geiger replied to Mike999's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I wasn’t gonna stop at my local HL on my way home but I stopped to buy beer and HL parking lot is a short cut home. So I stopped. I found the 92 Toyota pickup and a Riviera on the clearance shelf at $7.49 each. I grabbed them even though I didn’t need them! So unexciting that I left them in the car -
Neat model! I used to own a 60 Electra two door hardtop.

That sucks! We’ve dodged that bullet here in PA , while neighborhoods around a were out for days. Many of my NJ peeps, including my daughter, had been out for days. She packed up her dog and perishable refrigerator / freezer stuff and stayed with my other daughter. My friend John near the Jersey Shore bought a whole house natural gas generator right after the chaos of Hurricane Sandy many years ago and hasn’t had the opportunity to benefit from it yet. Talking with my NJ friends all complaining about how long they were out this time.. so I asked if John finally got to use his generator. Nope! He was the only one who didn’t lose power!

Chuckle of the day- Actually yesterday. A guy on Facebook was very interested in the weathering processes on my 1950 Chevy pickups. He was quite complimentary and said he wanted to learn just how it was done. So I sent him a long private message with my layering / wet sanding technique and my pastel chalk rusting process. He responded that it was too much work! Wasn’t there a spray he could just use on the bare plastic body they would come out just like it? I guess it’s not for everyone!

13 years on MCM, & 10,000 post
Tom Geiger replied to Greg Myers's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Some of my relatives lived at the same houses with same numbers for 40-50 years. My longest was my old house in NJ, which was 25 years. Currently we don’t have a house phone but I’ve kept the same NJ cell number for 15-20 years now. As an aside, you’ll see old family phone numbers on my light commercial models. Just because. -
Atlantis Models has bought another lot of tooling/molds.....
Tom Geiger replied to Dave Van's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Yes! The Galaxie Chevys were a collaboration between Gary Schmidt and was it Tom West if I remember correctly to build the perfect kit. Even the chassis was advertised as a stand alone model all by itself! What happened? As Mike said, our cheap compatriots weren’t ready for that price point.. even for a kit of this quality. It was noted back then that you didn’t even see a lot of built models at shows from the faithful! It’s been said that these post war cars weren’t all that popular. I bought both the coupe and sedan delivery when they were new to support the effort. I have since acquired a couple more at bargain prices over the years. These were the prewar cars that were warmed over to support GM until they got the all new cars done for 1949. Gary has promised follow up of 1941 cars but never got that far with the project. -
What do you drive?
Tom Geiger replied to gasman's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I rented a Focus for a business drive from PA/NJ to Syracuse NY. (Company preferred I rented a car rather than pay me mileage) It bogged in the many hills at Throughway speeds. Not a pleasant trip. Later trips I wound up driving Hyundai Elantras. Pleasant to drive and peppy. Enough that I bought myself one! -

I had hottest registration notices on both our cars and renewed registrations on line here in Pennsylvania. They did say there was no leeway on that since it could be done without any contact or even interaction with their staff. Inspection was another matter so my two March expiration stickers were good through end of July.. I haven’t check to see if that was extended since my garage was open and they were happy to help.

Buyer expectations by era! Back when the original Duster kit was tooled up for 1970, it started out as a promo ordered by Chrysler. That meant a minimal parts count since they needed to be factory assembled as toys that would hold up to play wear. Once the tooling was paid for with the promo order, MPC was free to modify the tool to open the hood and include an engine and associated detail. I believe the simple chassis also had more parts than the promo. That was state of the art for kits back then. The primary market was kids, and we simply didn’t know more detail was possible! As mentioned, that Duster promo and kit was updated every year until 1975 or 1976 when the tool was modified into the Dodge. And that tool is still existing and serviceable today. Why did AMT/ Ertl cut a whole new tool? The same reason Revell has recently given us 1957, 1929 and 1932 Fords as well as a Barracuda, Nova and others that original old tooling still exists for all of those.. to give builders a state of the art kit to today’s tooling and molding possibilities of timeless subjects they hope to sell for a very long time! Personally, I’m pleased with the newer more detail kits as I want my models to be as good as they can be. I probably own a dozen of that Duster, but have yet to actually build the kit, for the full detail chassis to use under older bodies. The chassis under my 1963 Valiant stock car, and the entire line of old Valiants I’m planning in the future.

Take white glue.. don’t know if you guys get Elmers Glue. Thin it down with water, paint both sides of ribbon with it, it should dry clear. And you can then cut it without it fraying. I invested in some $15 worth of 1/16 inch wide ribbon on eBay. What I have doesn’t fray if cut quick with a sharp scissors ✂️

I’ll pipe in that a sealing coat of Testors Dullcote is recommended over any primer used as a finish. Reason being that primer is porous, so it will retain dust and dirt. It also scratches easy.

EBay has sellers jumping through hoops like trained poodles! They have to ship immediately and the fact they’ve printed the label or hit the “shipped” button satisfies that. I’ve paid for something 10pm on a Sunday and immediately got the “package shipped” email

I had one and now it’s gone... forgot all about it until I saw your post! -
I can do anything those kits say they do with the above pictured pastel chalk set from Hobby Lobby and a can of Testors Dullcote!

I primarily use Duplicolor primers and haven’t had any issues except for Tamiya kits, so I use their primer on those. The recent Issues are probably plastic related. The American manufacturers who have product contracted to China are using multiple suppliers and I doubt they have much final control over plastic content. Some Revell products are coming out of Poland too. I won’t compromise on spray paint for cost. My time, drying time and the quality I desire are more important than the few dollars I can save. The Facebook model boards are minefields of guys posting failed paint jobs and asking why. Digging in they’re using some cheap off brand dollar store primer (if primer at all!) and $3 finish paints. I get a chuckle when you try to council them and they argue with you! My favorite was a guy who said I must be rich, he couldn’t afford Duplicolor! I checked his profile and he owned a new 4x4 crew cab that alternated towing a big boat or pair of Harleys... priorities!

Do you have a scrap body? It’s best to experiment with something that doesn’t matter. I did that originally. I had a Volare junker that was given to me on my club’s junk day. It came out so well I built a project around it. Once it started to come out well, the guy who chucked it got upset that he had given it away...
