cobraman Posted July 29, 2020 Posted July 29, 2020 Man am I glad to have this thing finished . It really taxed my meager talents . First thing I found was the tires were in pieces . This kit is 1/20 scale and a search for tires did not have any results . The wheels were another problem as they were butt ugly and did not match what was on the real car . Next the supplied kit engine . Worst blob of plastic I had seen in a long time . I started looking at 1/18 scale parts thinking they might work . I replaced the kit wheels and tires with a set of 1/18 scale I found on the bay . I think they work . The engine problem was solved when I found I had a 1/18 scale 427 engine out of a die cast Cobra . That also seemed to work . The hood , doors and trunk open on this kit . As it was at one time available with an electric motor I glued the truck shut because it was just a battery box . Tires were too big for the kit wheel wells so I used my Dremel to enlarge them . It didn’t look right so I used some sheet plastic and putty to flair the wells . Made a simple front spoiler because by this time I gave up all hope of making a replica . Paint is Duplicolor Dark Blue Metallic with Duplicolor clear . I light of the problems I had with this kit I am pleased at how it turned out . Thanks for looking !
Oldcarfan27 Posted July 29, 2020 Posted July 29, 2020 Impressive! Those wheels look great on there. Even at 1/18 scale, they balance out the cars lines.
vamach1 Posted July 29, 2020 Posted July 29, 2020 Bravo Cobraman. As we know the original concept was pretty radical back in 1968 ( too much so for an actual production car) but I think you have done a great job using today’s trends (large diameter wheels) with and “old school” engine that will still look cool years from now. As you know I was going to build mine close to the original appearance but since I already built the 1/25 AMT kit which is okay (but $$$ on the bay) but you have clearly shown me that this kit does have potential with some creativity and modeling skills. Next week I hope to reboot some modeling projects that have been set aside for a few months including the one I have of the same kit I painted a very long time ago.
stinkybritches Posted July 30, 2020 Posted July 30, 2020 I think you did a great job on this. I like everything about it.
stitchdup Posted July 30, 2020 Posted July 30, 2020 cool, i think it was worth the hassles you had with it
Spottedlaurel Posted July 30, 2020 Posted July 30, 2020 I enjoyed watching it come together on your WIP thread and it's great to see the finished article here. It looks really good, I think your perseverance has paid off and your talents are rather better than meagre to get it here and looking as good as this.
doorsovdoon Posted July 30, 2020 Posted July 30, 2020 Looks amazing! The 1:18 scale parts work really well. The engine looks great, I remember the Lego block it replaced, Lol! I enjoyed watching this progress and the work you put into it, nice one. What a wild looking Mustang!
Gramps46 Posted July 30, 2020 Posted July 30, 2020 Spot on Ray. The paint looks great and the wheels and tires worked out well.
Plowboy Posted July 31, 2020 Posted July 31, 2020 This is a really cool Mustang! Nice color and the wheels suit it perfect! It may have given you problems. But, you got them all figured out! IMO, this is some of your best work Ray! Well done!
Claude Thibodeau Posted July 31, 2020 Posted July 31, 2020 Hi Ray! Wow! I had never seen that kit before, either in print or de visu... You certainly made the most of it. Bravo! CT
TooOld Posted August 2, 2020 Posted August 2, 2020 Considering all of the issues you had I'd say you did okay , that's a really sharp looking Mustang ! Congrats !
Koellefornia Kid Posted August 2, 2020 Posted August 2, 2020 Cool! Someone should build a 1:1 version!
