‘71 Duster 340 Mod Top

I suppose I’ll begin with the brief history of the Mod Top just in case anyone isn’t aware that it really was a really real option offered by Plymouth in 1969 (on Barracudas and Satellites) and 1970 (Barracudas and ‘Cudas). Dodge offered something similar on their A and B bodies in ‘69; only it was called the Floral Top. According to legend the inspiration came from the Milan/Paris fashion trend of the time with the goal of targeting a burgeoning young female car buying demographic. It was a flop. IMHO, the only cars I’ve seen wearing these wild vinyl tops well were the E body Barracudas.

About 2 years ago while browsing some sites for unique aftermarket accoutrements I stumbled across Slixx decal sheets of Mopar Mod Top print. I snatched up 2 of them with no idea when or upon what I might use them. Then, the more I thought about it the more it felt like the anything goes mentality behind then Duster and the Mod Top were a perfect match. So.....

The paint is Plymouth L5 Bahama Yellow and 500 clear from ScaleFinishes. Trim is BMF. I day-two-ed the spoiler to semigloss white instead of black and added plug wires.

I'm digging this , man ! That EL5 Bahama Yellow works very well with the V1Q Mod Top and matching interior !

I could swear that there were a couple of 1970 Dusters built with the blue / green Mod Top with either EB5 or EB7 paint --- thus far , just rumours .

Hi Chris, really nice clean build. The mod tops are interesting. What I REALLY like though, is the use of the mod top decals on the interior, that looks awesome. Might need some of those decals. Thanks for sharing.

That looks great! I like that you used the Duster for the build instead of the usual Barracuda. I bought the same Slixx decal recently (only bought one though) How necessary was it to have two sheets? Do you think one would do for the top and seats on a 69 Roadrunner or a 69 Dart?

You may be able to do it in one sheet. I did not manage my material in the most efficient way. My advice would be to cut out the roof first. I did mine in 3 sections (first photo). Then use the remainder for the seat panels. I actually performed these steps bass ackwards, thus getting in to both sheets. I hope this helps, Tom.

Very cool. I remember seeing a few midsize Mopars back in the day with those “mod” tops. I really like looks of your Duster setup that way. It looks both good and period right. Even if it isn’t.

Besides being a beautiful looking build the roof treatment really makes this standout. I also like how you used the same treatment on the seat inserts. The engine compartment is well detailed and the overall clean appearance  of the paint and body trim also.
