The 21' Cannonball Ruse build thread

Well I am getting down to the final little touches on this one. It still needs headlights, wipers, turn signals, antennas, and a few other minor things, but I am getting close. I also have a few paint issue to fix, but I still have some time. 

The 3D printed LS engine fit fairly well. I had to trim the mounts and massage the bottom, but its in there. Made an electric fan out of the NASCAR fan and added hoses and wires. The A/C is even plumbed, but hard to see as it way down in the engine bay. 

The exhaust from the engine exits out the rear of the engine not down. I found some 2mm leather cord at HL and it worked great to connect up the headers to the NASCAR exhaust. It is flexible, but round like pipe and can be painted. It's black, but I used CA glue and so it frosted, a little black paint and its looking good. 

I have some spinners that came with the wheels, still on the fence as to if I will use them or not. 

As you can see from the under car shot, I got the chassis extended to fit the body really well. 

I took the NASCAR tank and extended the sides 1/4 in to give a longer range, should hold 80+ gallons of fuel. That will limit the fuel stops.

I ordered my replacement models by phone from Nicholas Hobbies in Pa. and I shared my story with the lady and the first thing she asked was if they had a Facebook page... 

Anyways 61 bucks more, the race cars are ordered...  I don't really recommend them though they're expensive... some of their kits that you could buy from Hobby lobby are 45-50 bucks each. 60 bucks for two snaptite kits hurts my feelings, not to mention that I spent 43 bucks more than that! ? for a grand total of around $105 just to get them on my desk. then I'll have to spend more on the conversions... Not even gonna break a sweat though. At least It's a good story for conversation.

I wanted to paint the wheels a neutral color that wouldn't stand out so I chose a dark gray primer and I clear coated them. I really like how they turned out, I'm going to have to remember that color for future projects.

I got the wheels and tires installed. You can see how low this thing sits. I have an idea that might help it not appear so low.

I think it looks good flat black, too bad I have other plans for it.

I feel you there, I spent $60 on the black Mustang before realizing it had a different body than what I wanted, $40 on the Mustang GTP for the 4 cyl engine, then another $25 to get the right kit with the body I wanted and I got super lucky only paying $25 for it. And I might need to get wheels and tires if I can't find treaded tires to fit the oddball kit wheels.

Looks like you and I will be at the opposite ends of the cost spectrum. My Stupidbird came from a lot of two glue bombs I bought on eBay for I think around $30 (for both), the tires come from a '75 Vette I bought at Ollie's just for parts for $10, Gramps46 donated the wheels, and the engine will come from the parts box.

Well that's good to know I'm not the only one spending money for this CBR. I don't know why I needed a new kit Why couldn't I just pull from my stock pile and be happy? nope not me! One of our club members joined the group for this Challenge... ChineseRandy he wants to join with the IMSA Mustang so that should be interesting lol

And as for your car Snake, I know you always seem to find the deals!

Hi guys,

after my fail or even non existent participation because of moving to another town in 2019 I would like to take part this year with these.

Chevy Impala Police Car body on top of the chassis from the Western Auto Monte Carlo. Will try to put the Aoshima SSR Professor wheels on it.

I already found out that I have to lenghten the chassis for correct wheelbase.

That's the kit I bought to borrow the engine from, I'm probably gonna throw the v8 from the kit I'm building in it if I ever build it.

I started to do a 71-73 Mustang from the MPC/AMT that's been out recently I have laying around but after looking it over I'd want to replace so much of the chassis it really didn't fit the spirit of the challenge in my mind.

For me, I spent very little on the kits, a $6 Goodwill 60 Impala kit, and a $7 Ford NASCAR Kit with parts from another $7 NASCAR kit both antique shop finds.  Where I spent the money was on wheels and the engine. The tires were $24 and the engine was another $20-25. I spent less on all 3 kits than I did on the tires.

Wow, awesome progress guys! Also, Snake - "Stupidbird" has become one of my new favorite car names ?

Looks like I have to make up some miles, so I better start getting some horsepower pulled together. 1964 was the first year for Chrysler's new 426 Hemi, and it proved its power and reliability right out of the gate by taking the top three spots at that year's Daytona 500. Comparing an AMT '64 Petty Belvedere engine to the one in the Lindberg Dodge, the biggest visual differences are the intake and oil pan. I kept the cross-ram intake (lousy fit and all), but modified the oil pan to a deep sump style.

Actually, if the paint job goes as planned, it will have another name, but I won't reveal it until completion.

#11 checking in.   Covered up the beautiful mica blue.  Debating on a coat of clear pearl, or Dullcote.  The wheels will be aluminum.

#5 - Audi Quattro

Made some adjustments to the front end for the sake of faithfulness rather than the brief per se. The kit indicators are too fat and the bumper recess is set too far rearwards, so I cut down the light units and filled the recess/grooves with plasticard, which was then shaved & sanded back. The remaining gaps were filled with Milliput:

Also had fun building a central console to go under the dash (omitted in the kit). The holes have been drilled ready for some photo-etch toggle switches and cable for a CB radio handset; breaker breaker watch out for them smokeys! ?

A update I got some time to work on this build I cut the hood out of the Lexus . I am coming to the first of many roadblocks on this build I chose the L version of this in hopes that I could mid engine it but I am running in to a air flow issue for this racing engine behind the seats. I have come up with a couple of options use the mono seat out of the race car and extend that chassis . Not really what I want to accomplish with this build. I can front mount the engine and use a torque tube to the trans axle and would have a full interior this way but would have to re work all the turbo parts . This way would look really stealth but would be hard to show off what I did . Or the third option cut everything in to pieces and hope it all turns out the way It looks in my head . This is the way I am leaning

Got the roll bar built and hidden pretty good. Still need to add rear downbars.

Ok, I have the rest of my parts in. I did some trading for a complete kit and extra decals, etc. I even ended up with an old build-up that is great for mock ups.  

So I will be changing out the Mustang body for this. I was looking through the stash for an unrelated build and came across this basic builder Gremlin....the perfect disguise!

Welcome to you both Randy & Mike ? - the more the merrier! Anthony & Randy, you guys need to get to work on those other club members! I'm not very experienced & only built a box stock car in last year's Run - it's all about the taking part ?

Yeah, we've been a club for going on nine years and I've been a member on the fourm for about 5 years been building for 30+ years though. 

I'm always trying to get them to join. But they're kinda an odd bunch.

One guy comes to the club meets with a photo album every month full of new developed photos of his builds from the month. I've never seen any of his builds in real life.?

One guy is so secretive that you couldn't pay him to see his builds in progress and he really doesn't take criticism to well either. 

Most of the guys are heavy collectors. They do build and for the most part, build great models. I don't think many would document their build progress like we do here either... Like I said earlier, in my opinion they all believe the fourm is for advanced model builders, even though some of them have been building longer than me. When you hang around with a group of guys who are mainly interested in showing and talking about their own stuff, it's hard to get them convinced that other guys build models too... ? but I don't mind I'm more of a listener anyway.

Well I tried to use that lame Matador chassis, no dice. I've switched over to a modern Nascar chassis from the AMT Tony Stewart Monte Carlo. Time to mock up the chassis and figure out the wheelbase.

Looks like that engine package would fill the rear seat area without much effort.  The front half of the interior with a firewall/window, back windows can be rolled down according to temperature.   I would draw out both cars on sketch paper, basic blocks, floor plan and elevations (I draw house blueprints), then hold up to a window like it's a light table, and see how everything meshes.

I have the major components that required scratch-building done, started painting the chassis.  Going with murdered out black look.  Screwed up the paint a little, might just give it a patina look, with rust decals from the '29 Model A Roadster kit, a different sort of camouflage than what the factory does for test mules.

Your heart's in the right place, but don't let it give you a heart attack that tosses out the fun along with an unfinished build. I did this Cruiser for the CB a couple years ago with the body on an Audi R8 Chassis. I'm sure a serious car guy could pick it apart, but I stayed centered by sacrificing technicalities for fun. Of course it's never won anything either, but winning isn't everything (says losers ?).
