Kits they never issued- but should have

Everybody has one- a list of models never released, not released in a scale you build, or only as something so inaccurate as to be useless.

Here's mine, all 1/25th scale:

1932 Ford with a completely stock, accurate, and super detailed chassis

Bugatti T57SC Atlantic coupe

Chrysler Chronos

Fred Frame Duesenberg racing car

Dry lakes/Bonneville streamliners such as Shadoff Special

Modern Bentleys

Pontiac Solstice

1961 Lincoln Continental retool similar to 1962 Thunderbird

Stuart Hilborn streamliner

My list could go on and on and could include many models in need of a good retool.

How about yours?

I would guess that less than 5% of the cars ever made were issued, so this could be a LOOOONG thread. 

In the mid 1980s, I was photographing the cars at the Goodguys show in Pleasanton, and a man about 30 years older than me said he had seen me at the model display. He asked me if they made a model of a 1948 Hudson 4 door with the lay down seats. I told his that I read the model companies needed to sell 100,000 kits (at that time) in order to break even. He said they didn't make that many of the real car, but that HE would buy one. He got a bit mad when I told him that he just needed to line up 99,999 more kit sales.

My personal fave: 1978 Dodge Magnum. It would have been cool if MPC offered this as an annual back then. 
 

Also: we need a Hellcat. Full detail with an engine. Charger or Challenger, doesn’t matter to me, although I think a Challenger would sell better than a Charger would. We need that engine in scale, at the very least.

Paul, that's an interesting list!

Here's mine:

Bentley/Rolls Royce from the 70s-80s.

Jaguar XJ6.

An accurate fox body Capri RS.

80s Cadillac Eldorado.

70s Cadillac Seville. 

60s-70s Triumph TR4, Tr6 or Spitfire. 

A nice Auburn Speedster. 

70s Stutz Blackhawk. 

77-78 Thunderbird. 

Cordoba with "Real Corinthian Leather"

Dodge Magnum XE

He probably would have gotten even madder if you told him it was the Nash that had the fold-down seats, not the Hudson .

But back on the subject: 

AMT '32 Ford 3-window coupe (must be a story as to why it only came out in 1/32, with the same wonky lower body/cowl that all the 1/25 kits had)

AMT '58 Plymouth (was supposed to have been produced in the early '60s as a Trophy Series contemporary to the '58 Chevy and '57 Ford)

AMT '69 Continental Mark III (per Dennis Doty, it was canceled in process; not sure how far it got)

AMT '51 Ford Victoria (would have been a logical followup to the '49 and '50 kits with shared tooling; I hate to think the clunky ITC '51 got in the way of that idea)

AMT '40 Mercury coupe/convertible (this could have worked like the '36 Ford, engineering the body with a separate roof treatment as an option, and sharing wheel/engine tooling with the '40 Ford - again ITC beat them to it with a lesser product)

AMT '64/'65 Chevy Chevelle hardtop and convertible full detail kit  (Why was the popular Malibu only released as a Craftsman?)

AMT '64 Nova (this one slipped through the cracks; no kit or promo that year)

Jo-Han '59-'61 Studebaker Silver Hawk (they had the Stude promo contract, but went with the more mainstream Lark - which leads to...)

Jo-Han '59-'61 Studebaker Lark (they had the promo tool, so why no kit until '62? Even with the odd size and wrong door length, they might have sold enough to make a few bucks)

A decent kit of an Auburn Speedster would be at the of my list.   Premier released a kit of a Kaiser-Darrin and an Allard that I would very much like to in versions that actually bore some resemblance to the originals.

Now, "kits they never issued, but should have" could end up looking a lot like another "What would you like to see?" thread,  but of kits that were actually planned, but never released, the top of my list would have been Jo-han's Packard V-12, and AMT's aborted Miller race car. Now if ICM could just be persuaded to release a 1/24 version of their Packard limousine....

Would like to see a good 73-79 Ford Truck kit.  Preferably a factory Hi Boy version.    Also a modern day big rig of some sort..  A garbage packer would be nice also.

You got my vote there, I own a 1:1 05 F150 Supercrew rollin 35's and 8" of lift and I've always wanted a kit of it to build....

Most all of the other things I would want have been done at one time or another but some are very hard to come by now a days and I'd like some of those to come back.

• Modern pickup trucks. Chev, Ford, Ram, whatever. Something from the last 10 years.
• Aston Martin V8 - 1969 through 1989
• Chev/GMC OBS trucks - K series, not the C series!
• 1977-1979 Ford Thunderbird
• VW T3 Transporter Doka - preferably in Syncro form
• Chassis cab pickups - Ford F550, Ram 5500. Something that would be a great blank slate for a deck truck, service body, picker/crane unit, tow rig, etc.
• Porsche Cayenne
• Land Rover Discovery
• 1968 Plymouth Fury III Convertible - but only because I want to build a version like we used to own!

In general, I'd like to see more passenger cars made that aren't an SS or the giant cubic inch engines or bucket seats. Y'know, regular family cars. Not always the top of the line ones.

True, and it looks excellent. But for me personally, the cost is too prohibitive and dangerous. I mean, wifey would kill me if I spent that much on a kit!

40-56 Cadillacs. I know there was a Revell kit of a 56? I believe, but no mid 50's Cadillacs with modern tooling and accuracy. I do have a built old 57 Eldorado Brougham. The 40's Cadillacs would make great models, stock or as customs.  A 47 Convertible would be the Bees Knees.  

50-57 Buick

50-57 Olds (I know there's a 49 Olds kit that is much like a 50.)

50-57 Pontiacs.  (I guess I love Harley Earl era GM cars)

Other 32 Ford body styles based on the Revell Kit:

- 32 Phaeton ( not the AMT one)

- 32 B400

-32 Roadster pickup with correct cab and commercial grille

-32 Woody

-32 Victoria (not the AMT one)

-32 Fordor (Drag City makes a nice one)

Any year early Ford Woody, especially a 40 Ford Woody

37-38 Chevy Sedan

I think that'll do it for now, I'll probably think of more later....
