thomascoffey1959@gmail.com Posted February 16, 2021 Posted February 16, 2021 Kitbashing ,parts swapping, is it an insidious addiction, or ???? It starts innocently enough ,different wheels ,tires, maybe some engine parts, next thing you know you're combining body parts, and chassis to replicate a certain car, or body style not kitted by the styrene giants, who FORCE us to build what THEY want us to build.( this is all tongue in cheek). Then this leads SCRATCH building parts and components, oh woe ,where does it all end !?? If you're not careful, you might end up building with BRASS!!! These days it seems you can find anything on the aftermarket, and with this 3d printing,,,, yet there is ALLWAYS something you cant find ,so its back to scratch .
Oldcarfan27 Posted February 16, 2021 Posted February 16, 2021 Yes, it is an addiction - of which, there is no cure. Gets to the point where you just CAN'T build out of the box, you'll only enjoy building what no one else has! It's so much fun once that bug has bitten you, though.
espo Posted February 16, 2021 Posted February 16, 2021 I think you're right. Now I got to get back to this '67 Chevelle two sedan Resin body. Parts from three or four other kits, stir slowly who know what can happen.
stitchdup Posted February 16, 2021 Posted February 16, 2021 A wheels swap here and there soon leads to every kit in the stash missing parts, which then leads to making other parts fit, and before you know it you have builds where only one piece is stock.
lordairgtar Posted February 16, 2021 Posted February 16, 2021 Then you buy more tools, a 3D printer, a lathe, maybe some stuff to do your own resin. Eventually you will be standing at intersections with a sign that says Model Car Builder, Please Help.
Dave Ambrose Posted February 16, 2021 Posted February 16, 2021 It's definitely an addiction. Creativity plus modelling is a hot ticket. Hot rodding is basically kitbashing with real cars. When I build model hotrods, I take great pleasure in swapping things around in a semi-believable manner in a quest for something a little different, and presumably cool. Probably the reason hot rods are the largest category of kits in my stash.
Oldcarfan27 Posted February 16, 2021 Posted February 16, 2021 Hello, my name is Patrick, and I have a kitbashing addiction....
thomascoffey1959@gmail.com Posted February 17, 2021 Author Posted February 17, 2021 all together now,, hello Patrick
Tom Geiger Posted February 17, 2021 Posted February 17, 2021 Yes! When one gets to the point where you instantly know exactly what to do to scratch build it! My mentor Joe Cavorley used to say that everything is just a series of shapes!

Fat Brian Posted February 17, 2021 Posted February 17, 2021 I have this particular one bad, fully a third or more of the kits I have are donors for other builds.
SCRWDRVR Posted February 17, 2021 Posted February 17, 2021 This is an affliction that I don't have a bad case of surprisingly, don't get me wrong I have been know to pull wheels from another kit or hoods to get the effect I want or match a 1:1 I'm trying to replicate but probably 95% of my builds are done with what comes with it outside of BMF, paints and wires and such....

slusher Posted February 17, 2021 Posted February 17, 2021 A very bad addiction, if you buy a kit just for parts you have it...
Modelbuilder Mark Posted February 17, 2021 Posted February 17, 2021 While there may be no cure, I have noticed that forcing one's self through exposure and response therapy helps keep the shakes away. For me, this is accomplished by completing at least 1 box stock build, between every couple of big projects, thus equating to around 1 a year at this point. The last attempt tho, failed, and I swapped out the wheels..... ?
Painted Black Posted February 17, 2021 Posted February 17, 2021 Well, in my case it has led to ALOT of unfinished stuff!! That by the way I just got rid of...
DrKerry Posted February 17, 2021 Posted February 17, 2021 It's an addiction for sure, but it's one that's great to have!!!!!
Sledsel Posted February 17, 2021 Posted February 17, 2021 Kitbashing... that's a tough one for me. Sometimes it is as simple as swapping engines or wheels, other times to add some accuracy or detail. What I do enjoy is taking leftover stuff and building "something"
Tom Geiger Posted February 17, 2021 Posted February 17, 2021 24 minutes ago, Sledsel said: What I do enjoy is taking leftover stuff and building "something" I’m pulling my second model out of a Jeep parts bag I bought at a show a long time ago. There may be at least another one in there yet!
thomascoffey1959@gmail.com Posted February 17, 2021 Author Posted February 17, 2021 I do buy kits for parts ,and I do have a lot of parts kits in my stash ,but they're labeled as such. The thing is, when you're trying to turn a poor kit that has a well rendered body into that silk purse,,,,,. I'm trying to justify my addiction here, the truth is ,it doesn't matter how well a kit is done from the factory, I find some reason to swap out parts. I've used seven AMT 1960 starliner kits for my BIG fords shelf, but only one is a stock 60. Come to think of it, it IS box stock,,,,,a ray hope,, hope for the helpless,or help for the hopeless.
89AKurt Posted February 17, 2021 Posted February 17, 2021 If you expected any help with this affliction, you are SOL. It can get really bad. For me, it's so bad that I can't do a Box Stock without doing something to fix the kit.

I am trying to get back to more box stock with some details because my build time is limited and it seems nothing is getting "built"
Greg Myers Posted February 17, 2021 Posted February 17, 2021 I find myself taking it a step further, thinking ahead to the parts left over. " Let's see, if I use this engine on this kit , I can take the left over engine and put it in here . . ." Maybe that's why I get so few finished. I also find myself going to the parts box to eliminate the possibility of ending up with kits with missing parts.
