I got to spend most of yesterday with a very close, dear, old friend.  He lives in Duluth, MN and he and his wife were travelling to New Hampshire for a family wedding.  Doug and I went to high school together, graduating in 1965.  Back in the 70's we were heavily into the hippie music scene.  He plays keyboards and I used to play bass.  We all (my wife too) had a great dinner and drinks at a Mexican style restaurant.  We were up until 3 AM reminiscing, chatting, and trying to catch each other up on the 22 years since we'd last seen each other.  Unfortunately it was all over way too soon and they're back on the road to New Hampshire.

Got a note from my old employer (Transdev, formerly Veolia Transportation) that I retired from about a year and half ago. Looked like a card of some kind, so thought well birthday coming up maybe they're sending me a birthday card. Opened it up and it was an invite to a dinner for the Million Mile Club Awards. Thought I'd made it, but hadn't hear anything. They were always a year or so behind on them because they have to check all your records for tickets, accidents, etc. Sort of a big deal to me actually.

Today is my mom's 62nd birthday... dad's was 5 months ago... with all their health issues of the last couple years, pleased to spend another with both.

Congratulations, Wayne!  A million blemish-free miles is an amazing accomplishment!!   Good show!

Even a year or so late, it's a classy act that they are acknowledging your achievement.

Good thing he wasn't hungry. They can run faster than you can and climb a tree faster also. It may be a myth, but I was once told the only hope was to run down hill since their shorter front legs keep them from going down hill very fast. Looks like beautiful country side for hiking.

I was hiking through the woods one day with a friend, and he had asked me what I would do if we came across a bear. I said that I would run, and he answered that I couldn't outrun a bear. I replied that was true, however that I could outrun my friend.

Back when my kids were young we'd vacation every summer in the Pennsylvania Pocono Mountains.  We'd stay in a community of houses around a lake, renting a very nice lake front house.  One of the features was a large rock about five feet off shore, but okay to wade to, the water only coming up to the bottom of your shorts. So when the wife was putting the kids to bed, I'd pour a nice glass of B&B and go sit on this rock in the dark and watch the bats skim the lake in the moon light.

I'm sitting there one night and I got the feeling I wasn't alone. I look back and there is a brown bear mother with two cubs grazing along the shore line. I sat there very quiet hoping that they hadn't seen me.  I watched as they slowly made their way past the property.  Then I made a bee line to the door!

I discovered today that the Big Boy restaurant chain still exists, and the only two locations in Ohio are within a few miles of me....haven't eaten at one in probably 25 years, they were a favorite chain from childhood....

...Which finally answers the age-old question of "does a bear sit in the woods?".

I pose this question many times. My answer is quite simple. A bear goes anywhere it wants to, are you gonna stop it?

My daughter was in Toronto for some appointments. During a break she wandered around the area and came upon Wheels & Wings Hobby. She went in and bought me a $250 gift certificate. Neat eh?
