I hadn't really noticed that before, but picking up the road car kit that's sitting in front of me right now I see what you mean. The sill/rocker being painted black perhaps doesn't help?

Kidding. I built this in the mid 70’s as a tween. This is the first time I used a rattle can to paint a model. I still have it and it’s nice to have a built reference for my ‘61 CBR Ranchero.

 I could have also done this for the replica build off CBP.

That’s true! I was looking around at a Swedish site, sort of a forum, where a lot of car interested people post pictures of their cars and found that The Alpina body kit have a neat sill/rocker that goes further down than the stock rocker, and also extends the bumper nicely. Still looks factory so I might go that route. And I see that most Alpinas does not have these.

there is an alpina kit available, I think its a revell or tamiya kit

True, both Fujimi and Revell have a Alpina but they both just have a front bumper and no side skirts or rear bumper. The fujimi front bumper is also available through scaleproduction.

Haven't done much building in the past couple of years, started a couple but some extreme life changes got in the way. Now, if I can get some heat in my basement, I hope to join in this community build.  Guess I will be knocking Landman out of his "oldest" spot.  I will be building a 49 Ford with some modern touches. Right now not sure of how many, if any, body mods I will be attempting.  I'm sure there will be some, just not sure how extensive.

There's some really unique builds here on the workbench this year. I can't find one build that I want to see finished more than any other. I'm still brainstorming my options with my entry, not fully committed to anything just yet... I have time.

I am hoping to join, but I am still working out a project. I have a couple thoughts but would really like to use something from the existing stash rather than adding to the stash. Does anyone know if the AMT 1955 Vette, I think kit 6210 issued about 1998, has a hard top included? Even though shown in the Gumball Rally, I can't see running across country at those speeds with the top down.

It might have been better buying a new kit. this glue bomb sure is brittle. Had to make new tie rods using the old ends and I changed/lerngthened several pins.

I seem to remember a glue called Ambroid when I was a kid that left big yellow blobs like this. That sure brings back memories.

If it's the Red 55 Vette pictured on the box that's in question... according to scalemates it's just a rebox and should have the hard top included in the kit as it was previously issued in Red with a top up version in 1995. If not, I have a dozen of those kits and could spare a top otherwise lol

Also a company in China has built an electric car (SS Dolphin) using styling cues from the 1958 Corvette but on a modern driveline and all the comforts of a new car. Sold only to foreign countries not avaliable in the U.S. Hmmm? 🤔 It would be cool to see a 55 Vette in simular fashion. Or maybe a long roof if you're feeling a wagon vibe?

CanonBall 2022 - Year of the Builder - 1953

After careful consideration of possible candidates from 1953 I have chosen the Ford 2 door hardtop as my choice for this year’s run. The Ford Motor Company was celebrating its golden anniversary with a young Henry Ford II at the helm after a struggle with the patriarch and founder, his father. Planning for the celebration began in 1950 with a variety of promotional projects to highlight the marque’s return after war time production. The previous year debuted a totally redesigned passenger car line which in 1953 would receive minor changes in grills, side trim and for hardtops and sedans a one piece backlight replacing the three piece rear window. All Ford brand cars and trucks would feature a 50th Anniversary 1903-1953 horn button. A number of  concept vehicles such as the X-100 and the Lincoln XL-100 were built for the car show circuit and a Ford ragtop would pace that year’s Indy 500. A new generation of F-Series trucks would feature roomier cabs with increased visibility and improved suspensions and handling.  The Ford Rotunda reopened to visitors that summer as part of the celebrations. 1953 would also mark the end of the venerable flat-head engine, being replaced the following year with a modern overhead valve train model.

Ford horn button celebrating the 50th Anniversary

I will be using a combination of the original Lindbergh kit from 1997 and the recent AMT Coke reissue of the same kit. In examining the AMT body I found it to be rather soft in detail and displaying flash with a poorer quality of plastic compared to the original Lindbergh pressing.  Certain parts from the AMT kit will be used, such as the body trim which will be dechromed to blend in with the body sides.

While the CannonBall is a dash across America, my plan is to build the hardtop according to my taste for a comfortable road car that, as an ole fart I can enjoy the road trip from NYC to LA. Not planning to set any record, yet wanting to be a part of the excitement.

if you want to save the 240z flares, macmodelismo do some in various sizes for not a lot of cash, I have a couple of sets and they are soft enough to conform to the rounded sides

Thanks for the advice. I actually have the Z kit and it will be wide bodied, so the flares are left overs. I'll have to find out uf they fit and enhance the look...
