The 2022 Cannonball Run Year of Birth Build Thread

Mating the Revell guts to the MPC body is proving tougher than I first thought. The wheelbase of the Revell kit is about 1/8" too long in the rear. In an attempt to move the rear axle forward I tubbed the rear but the wheels I had intended to use are so big I can't get the front as low as I want it. I'm going to put this chassis in another drag Mustang kit and pull out another fresh chassis and try again. I also picked out some smaller wheels.

Maybe you could opt for a more readily available Power plant? GT Ford, Ferrari, LS? VW, Allison? Electric conversion? Just some suggestions to help get you out of the hole... The modern Mercedes engine is a great idea though.

I already have a long dead WIP with an Allison. 😅

Or since it will be a light weight car.. a 1000hp Honda engine would fit the bill..

That Ferrari build video digest is intense!

I just checked eBay:
Honda F20 Inline 4 Engine 1/24 1/25 is sort of rough, but it's certainly workable, $26.
1/24 Toyota-Lexus 1JZ Non-VVTI Turbo 3D engine kit-US SELLER $35, might be too long.
1/24 Nissan SR20 S14-S15 Black Top Engine Kit 3D Print-US SELLER! $35, looks doable.

The only issue, keeping the chassis and crude suspension.  Or creating a new suspension, which would doom the project.

I got the frame and the fuel tank boxed in. I'm estimating the fuel tank capacity to be about 50 gallons now.

The muse can be fickle sometimes. I had a build planned out that I hadn't gotten to yet that was perfect for this theme. The basic plan was a modern take on an early Mustang using the MPC 79 body and the guts of the Revell 90 LX, something like this but without the pace car graphics that are specific to 1979.

For... reasons... that just didn't work. The wheelbase of the chassis is a bit longer than the MPC body and the tires were too big to get as low as I wanted without major mods to the front inner fenders. So I started with a fresh chassis and looked for ideas that might not require as much modification to the innards of the car.

Then the muse pointed a new direction, build the 1981 car in 1981 style. I saw the incredible Cobra decal on the 81s and just went with it.

So now I've got a direction and I'm making progress.

After waiting on wheels and tires to arrive from the Ukraine, they were not what I wanted. They only took a mmonth to get here. Oh, well.

So, I ha some tires from Fireball that I wll use the stock wheels.  I had to widen the wheels to make the tires work, but they lookk good now.

I had to do a lift on the kit to ake the tires work, as they are 33in tires.

I used the winch from the Revell CJ-7 kit and modified the bumper to hold it.

Good thing this is a year build, I may need it this time.

I saw that build a lot when I was looking for pictures. I could only hope mine would turn out that nice.

Update for my Javelin.

Still looking for the right chassis. I've got one I robbed from the Foose F100 pickup but it's just not quite right. So the search continues.

I found some new tires, nice Michelin Pilot Sport Cups, with nice sidewall detail so I'll be printing those up soon. Still undecided on wheels, I like the Halibrands and I like the GT500s

and there are still lots out there to pick from so the search on those continues as well.

Going through some of my other 3D files I found an interior to use. The dash, steering wheel and center console are out of the Ram TRX and actually look really good...at least I think so. There will be some modifications needed to fit. I also found a Hellcat engine to print as well so I need to hollow out the center console to fit the transmission tunnel as well but that will have to wait as I want, or am hoping, to have a chassis file I can print soon that will allow me to see how things line up before printing it all.

So here are some mock ups of where I'm at now. Still lots of planning to do since the files I'm using aren't meant to go together so they require some adjustments before printing, and luckily that can be done in the slicing/editing software for my printer.

Hopefully some more in a few days, if I can find that chassis/suspension files I want.

Its been a slow go on my Club DeMer as I've been trying to sort out the front suspension.

I added some shock towers to the chassis and fabricated some coil-overs and lower A-arms, and modified some parts box spindles to make it all work.

I'm a little unhappy with the stance but the rear can't go any lower because of tire clearance. This thing initially had 13" tires. I may wind up raising the front a tad to level it off but that's in the air.

I also got the altered C7 taillights to fit, and I like the look. The stock bumpers are very thin and I might mold them in as there won't be any chrome trim anyway.

Next I'll be working to get the CTS headlight bezels to fit. I'm close but trying to decide on cutting the hood slightly for them to fit, or cutting the bezels and keeping the hood as is.

This has become a full custom now, as the changes have become major. I think I may need therapy! 🤔

I know exactly what you mean... The mind of a model maker is a blessing and a curse at the same time.

I've been trying to get the Van finished before the beginning of March and It has been driving me crazy.

Sorry, not related to the CBR, well, kinda... it was a project I was trying to finish for the 2019 CBR (Vannonball Run). Never made it to the starting line. Latley it has become my top priority and has snowballed out of control. I want to finish this so I can get moving on Clyde's Wrecker. I hope that project doesn't end up like the Van 3 years later.🙄😑😒

Just joined the site and wanting to declare my entry is this years Cannonball.  This magazine article captured my attention when I was a kid/teenager and I was instantly hooked on the beautiful lines of the body.  Plus all the late 70s/early 80s technology all wired in.   Kinda cheesy by today's standard but I am going to have a blast attempting to re-create this legend.  Going to improve upon the powerplant by modding with some "Shelbyesque" power adders.   But stay as true as I can to the original look of the cannonball racer.

I will be using the AMT GT-350 kit which I have read does have issues.

To see more pictures of the inspiration please see my build thread:  67 Shelby GT500 "Super Secret Snake" Cannonball racer
