Kits in Walmart For Christmas
vamach1 replied to OldNYJim's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The largest Walmart near me has a Hobby Lobby very close by (in the old ToysRus store) and of course HL has the same kits and more at 40% off AND all the supplies and paints, etc and not just some six color paint sets. As for the typical customer I see in these two stores that happen to be selling the same thing this month, I’ll let you all imagine why I prefer HL over Walmart anytime. Once these kits are sold (and probably only at select stores) they will disappear from the shelves until a new batch comes in next December. Perhaps there are a few that are roughly the same price that HL may not have in stock but yesterday at 1pm in the afternoon you would have thought there was a snowstorm coming as every line in Walmart had at least five people in line and no models to be seen anywhere, mostly food and paper products. I did buy one 1/64 M2 car (Mustang Gasser) that the HL did not have. I really do miss ToysRus for the diecast selection. -
Constant & Annoying Emails From Finescale Magazine
vamach1 replied to Ramfins59's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
I’m guessing 95% or more of the SA to FSM “converts” will not renew. The 1st issue I received had almost zilch about car models. As for the barrage of emails, they are pretty annoying. -

It’s funny that Monogram did a reissued 1/32 Cobra slot car that’s very nice but making a more modern 1/24 or 1/25 kit or slot car just seems to be ignored for whatever reason and thus it’s either making one from a 55 year old slot car or a very expensive resin kit with or without an engine. With the Paramount kit being made in Japan it was probably copied off of something else at the time. In any case it will need a lot of “parts” to make a nice looking shelf kit. I’ve run into the same dilemma with the Lindberg kit - next to the HRM resin kit I guess you can at least probably justify the cost of the latter. For reference here’s the LIndberg kit with a lot of extra parts I was test fitting to see how I could improve upon tit without breaking the bank more. Gary McNutt did a fantastic job on the Lindberg kit given what he had to work with back in the day so it’s doable. -
427 cobra's

Thanks Ray. Not if I start on the Hasegawa kit. ? It will either be the Mustang II, Mustang Cobra or MPC Boss 351. I am off this week so perhaps a few will get done. Here’s the metal parts from the Cobra I purchased. -

Excellent as always. ? I’d like to just finish one kit by the end of the year. ? -
We should know in a few days or weeks but I am guessing the wheels (hubcap & trim ring) will not be anything we have not seen before. These are the MIssing Link resin ones (w/o the FoMoCo engraving) on a MPC “Boss” I’ve been working on.

It is pretty much the same kit as the Mach1 show car. The Iron Horse was a later release based on the same mold. I am guessing that the Autolite version was a marketing gimmick because the show car sort of resembled a 67 Fastback and the Salt Flat record holder driven by Mario Andretti. However the Salt Flat car was a highly modified 67 Mustang with an Indy Cammer engine and a wild set of headers and a clear hood to show off the wild engine. Aside from the color of the kit and race car and a body style that is based on a fastback Mustang that’s about all the two have in common. Nonetheless it is area kit and another example of AMT getting their monies worth out of a mold.

True. This release is based on the MPC kit with I assume a modified grille and perhaps front bumper.

Two pictures from the Round2 website. Kind of sad a 428 with a air cleaner for a 70 mustang with a shaker is supposed to pass for a 351 Cleveland or 429CJ engine. Cannot say I am surprised. ?

X2. Great color choice too.

LEGO Colosseum - 9036 pieces
vamach1 replied to afx's topic in All The Rest: Motorcycles, Aviation, Military, Sci-Fi, Figures
Ginormous size and price but very cool. It’s amazing the Colosseum was built that long ago to hold that many people. Not a bad job to have to design sets now for a living. -
Wow - Hobby Lobby was a zoo today and nothing special in the model department and certainly no spray paints for those prices.. However, I did pick up this Autolite Specail kit from an ex Ford employee whose father also worked for Ford and the Hasegawa kit came in the mail.

I think the question is which kit has the least glaring inaccuracies. The link I posted cover a lot of the major differences of the AMT vs. MPC kits. In this picture the Sprint and the copper colored 73 are the MPC kits and other are AMT based. To the eye the MPC kits are larger than the AMT ones. As I have said many times one of the most annoying thing to me about the MPC kit is the vents in the back of the hood that are difficult to fill in without a lot of work. Many previous posts have mentioned the issues with many things including the promo based engine compartment, no mufflers, no decals for a Mach1 version, no 351C or 429CJ engine on so on. At this point there a remote going to be any major changes the the molds so all one can do is spend hours correcting the problems and buying some resin parts and correct decals. Will I throw the dozen or so kits I have now in the trash when the Revell kit comes out - of course not but it’s not like comparing a OLD Palmer kit to an OLD AMT OR MPC kit.

Looks very cool. The wheels are a very nice addition. I am still working on a Boss 351 and between the decals and replicating the dual color scheme has probably doubled the build time. ?

https://robdebie.home.xs4all.nl/models/mustang.htm This website has a great comparison of the MPC and AMT kits. Needless to say neither kit body is accurate even assuming the AMT is based on the promo. So it’s a question of how much effort one wants to make on correcting the glaring inaccuracies. Build one of each would not be that time consuming but then there is the interior, incorrect engines and exhaust systems and lack of any under the hood accessories and so on. I hope the first version of the new and improved 71 Mustang is many times better than these almost fifty year old molds.

I have only seen the box art an a screen shot of the back of the box but to me it looks mostly based on the MPC version.
