Unimog
mikemodeler replied to Kit Basher's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
Yes they were Hugh, I could bounce the rear end like a basketball! Our plow Unimog had a flatbed so we loaded some scrap engines for ballast. The Uni that had the end loader had a factory steel block for ballast, as did our forklift, that weighed about 1,500 lbs., and we did not have a problem with it. I would cut some thick pieces of styrene and give them the rust treatment and stack them in the bed to simulate steel plates. A friend of mine did that with the plow truck pickups we used instead of weighing them down with sand or stone. That spreader that comes with that kit would be more than enough weight for ballast. -
History of MPC's Fifth Generation El Camino Kits

Thanks Luc, I do have the El Camino from the Bass Busters kit. I might be willing to trade the El Camino I picked up yesterday, not sure yet. -
History of MPC's Fifth Generation El Camino Kits
mikemodeler replied to Fabrux's topic in Truck Kit News & Reviews
I picked up a complete Monogram El Camino model yesterday at a swap meet. I haven't compared it to my other Elky kits but it is the odd version with the custom hood and turbo charged motor along with a camper top. It is molded in red and cannot be built stock, but I am sure if I was to try I could find a stock hood and interior. My first new vehicle almost was an 81 El Camino, until the dealer realized I had beaten him down on the price so far he wasn't going to make any money! -
If someone is striving for accuracy, then the first issue of the Bronco kit along with a set of rear flares will get them there. I picked up this kit yesterday at a swap meet and later today I will be online ordering my "accessories" from Fireball to customize mine the way I would build it!

That came out real nice and the weathering makes it look that much more realistic. I would suggest some ballast in the rear as in real life these things needed weight in the rear as they were front heavy. -
AMT Parts Packs - Your Ideas & Suggestions?
mikemodeler replied to Casey's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I like your list Casey. Not sure the snowplow is possible, but the other parts mentioned should be doable. Given the recent success of the Revell GMC Pickup Snow Plow kit, I am surprised Round 2 hasn't brought out a kit with that snowplow. I know it is a wish list, but realistically, Round 2 could create some of the items fairly simply and easily but history hasn't been kind to selling some parts packs. -
MID CAROLINA MODEL CAR SWAP MEET SALISBURY NC 2/17/2018
mikemodeler replied to VW93's topic in Contests and Shows
It was a good show, packed in tight as usual! I scored a model from Frank, he was a busy guy for sure! I stopped by a couple of Hobby Lobby's and a Michaels' on the way home, did see a couple of guys that were at this swap meet, still looking for bargains! LOL~ -
Approach cautiously but definitely inquire with him as to what his wishes are and if he has assigned power of attorney to anyone for handling his affairs. It could be possible that whomever is selling the collection to satisfy his debts and expenses. You didn't mention the level to which he is incapacitated, that could weigh heavily into what is transpiring. Tread carefully until you know the facts and then decide if the authorities need to be involved.

I would buy several, always liked the Commando with the early grille. That snow plow can be had from Olson Bros for about $14.

There was one at the swap meet today in Salisbury NC- big money! There was a vendor who was selling the Mount'n Goat for $29, took a pass.

I wonder if the stock springs from one of the CJ-5 kits would work for the front? They look similar to the ones you have posted here Casey.

MID CAROLINA MODEL CAR SWAP MEET SALISBURY NC 2/17/2018
mikemodeler replied to VW93's topic in Contests and Shows
Planning on being there, have a couple of bucks to spend, looking for some new kits. -
I agree 100% ! It would be nice to see these tooled up with more accurate chassis and drivetrains. It would also be nice to see the variety we have had in the Moebius Fords from the same year range- long bed/short bed, deluxe and stripper trim.
-
Has anyone heard any updates on when the long awaited Ford F-100 4x4 kit will be out? The box art model was shown but I have not seen any updates on the release date of the kit.
-
The best way to turn these kits into a 4wd is to use the chassis from the MPC Deserter kit. The inner fenders in the 72 Chevy kit are incorrect and should be cut out. The ones in the Deserter chassis are closer to being correct. A better 2wd chassis can be found in the 64/65/66 Chevy pickups from Revell.

I am not the expert Bill is, but using a company like LMC who offers OEM style replacement parts for these vintage trucks, would lead me to believe they are accurate. The Ford pickups used the same step side bed from the mid 50's up through 1979, with some slight differences IIRC. That said, I have seen some custom trucks using newer style beds on older trucks, most notably the step side from a 90's vintage GM truck on a 67-72 GM truck.

Would you or wouldn't you?

Do what YOU want, it's your promo. I would paint it a different color and detail it , but that's me. -
Anyone make a resin 1 ton dump bed

Yes, email him. He was working on a prototype last fall, I am sure he is still planning on it but probably got busy. -
I'm guessing that some of the clearance kits will be on eBay this coming week at twice their discounted price. I saw this after the last Ollie's sale where those $7.99 kits were being advertised for $15-20. Not sure how many sold, but for those that couldn't make it to Ollies, getting a kit for $15 might have been a deal. I did see a bunch of kits last year at a swap meet that you could tell were straight from Ollie's and the sellers were proud of their asking prices. Towards the end of the day it appeared they had sold one or two, and I remember young kids were the ones buying them. I have no problem with someone trying to make a buck, that is what our country is all about. I just like being an informed consumer!

All of the above plus NASCAR and the second largest banking area. We were also famous for letting people choose whatever bathroom they fancied, for a year or so at least!

how does clearance work? for stupid people like me
mikemodeler replied to rel14's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
Using eBay to value kits is like using Barrett Jackson to value collector cars, it doesn't always work that way! Just because someone lists a kit on eBay for big money doesn't mean its going to sell for big money. A kit sells for what someone is willing to pay, much the same way in the 1:1 car world. If you don't HAVE to have a certain kit that is going for big money on eBay, chances are you will be able to find it somewhere for the right price later. Everybody has a different perception of what is a bargain. I could have bought a clearance model at Hobby Lobby yesterday for $7.50, definitely a bargain, but only if I was going to build it or needed it, which I didn't. Someone else might have thought otherwise. -
