1975 Datsun 620
mikemodeler replied to martinfan5's topic in Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
Looks nice, I have one to build, also have the similar truck from Revell that has the dirt bikes, might build them side by side and compare. Does this kit allow you to build it more "street" like? I know the box art shows a couple of versions but wanted your impression. -
Car Repair Ripoffs 1: Dealerships
mikemodeler replied to Ace-Garageguy's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I have been in the auto parts and repair biz since 1980 (yeah, I started young! LOL) and typically do most of my own repairs unless time or special tools prevent me from tackling it. I have a trusted mechanic who knows not to BS me and he is not the type to do that anyway as he is always busy and makes his fair share the honest way. He loves it when people bring their cars to them and tells him how much they spent with so and so and it still isn't fixed and he points out the obvious to him. I work for a company that is an OEM supplier (partially owned by Toyota) and our "aftermarket" parts are actually Toyota OEM in an aftermarket box. My job is great as I literally do not have defect issues like most aftermarket companies and when I do get an "alleged defective", 99% of the time I can determine it was something other than a manufacturing defect that caused the problem. That doesn't always sit well with some of my customers, but I remind them we aren't in the business of reimbursing others for their incompetence or lack of following proper repair procedures. There will always be pressure by upper management at whatever repair facility you take your vehicle to generate more sales dollars. You can educate yourself on your vehicle and don't be afraid to question them or get a second opinion. Your three biggest investments tend to be 1) Yourself; 2) Your house; 3) Your vehicle. If you would seek a second opinion on your health or your house, why wouldn't you do the same on your car? And no, I don't mean asking your brother-in-law who once worked at Jiffy Lube about your car, I mean asking another qualified shop! -
Thanks, very much appreciated.Spoke to him today and he is feeling much better, more energy and appetite, things are looking up!

Admittedly, I haven't watched a lot of football this past season, in part because of work but mostly just too busy to watch. Went to some friends house yesterday and had a great meal and fun watching the game and thought the last 10 minutes was some of the most exciting football I have seen in a long time. Glad to see the Eagles win, they worked their butts off this season and rightfully earned it.

What will I need to complete this model?
mikemodeler replied to JollySipper's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
It is always a BLAH_BLAH_BLAH_BLAH shoot with Jimmy's stuff as it can vary from time to time. I would buy it and check with what you have and go from there, most likely something will work. -
Made a huge mistake!!!
mikemodeler replied to Jeff31293's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Use the 40% off coupon at Hobby Lobby or the 50% off coupon at Michaels and get yourself a new airbrush that will last you for years and parts are readily available. -
Stunning paint, well detailed, absolutely love this color and car! Very nice job!

That looks great Dan, not lifted as high as most of your builds but can definitely tell you built it! -

What happened to automotive "journalism", rant ahead
mikemodeler replied to Aaronw's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
I base car buying decisions on what I feel during a test drive and what a couple of my auto shop owning friends have to say. Despite being in the auto parts business for 30+ years, I like to ask around as I am certain I don't know it all. Just because some parts for some vehicles sell well does not always translate into it being a problem car, could be a ton of them on the road. I visit repair shops and talk to shop owners and techs as part of my job and I usually hear the good, the bad and the ugly about vehicles! -
Spoke to my oldest brother who is battling cancer again, this time it's in several different spots and hasn't been doing well. He just went through some rough days doing radiation treatment and is feeling fatigued but is in less pain, a sign the tumors are shrinking! Prayers have helped but we are also hopeful that the doctors are on the right path with this treatment. He has had a rough 5 years and losing our parents in the middle of this fight has only made it harder on him. I remain optimistic that he will beat this.

Great job on that Scott, sorry I missed at the show last week.

Brush painted.
mikemodeler replied to Lovefordgalaxie's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Incredible talent and patience to achieve such results. I am sure he had a few "oops" along the way (as most of us do!) but sure would like to see a short video of him in action painting a model. A question for those familiar with this process- If you have a problem and need to strip the paint, is it similar to spray where the whole body has to be stripped or can it be done on just the affected area? -

mikemodeler replied to Drgon63's topic in Contests and Shows
Another great show, sold off a lot of kits and had some great conversations with attendees and the host club. Highly recommend people go to this show and the SCMA show in Simpsonville in May, great club and event. -
Excellent show, best place to find a TON of model stuff! Resin, new kits, old kits, just about anything you can want. No show, just all swap meet!

Another great trade with Vince aka Vintagedragcrazy. The guy at the post office wanted to know if I was shipping stuff for Groundhog Day!

Testors brush paint
mikemodeler replied to junkyardjeff's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Because my time at the bench varies and can be a month or more apart, I have found shaking up the paints for a minute or two really helps and I have a old piece of sprue on hand to use as a stirring stick. It helps get the pigments stirred up and gives better consistency when painting. As also noted, make sure you prime the plastic before painting, it can make a huge difference in appearance and coverage.
