Suburban kitbash
mikemodeler replied to Randy Meyer's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
That should be nice when finished. Are you going to build it stock or is it going to be a custom? -
Ditto!

I don't recall that the snowplow was ever in a Revell kit. The only kits I have seen with a snowplow were the old MPC Jeep kits from 1969/70. I'm thinking that maybe someone got their wires crossed with the Jeep kit calling it Ice Patrol. Who knows, maybe we will get a kit with a snowplow and a snowmobile!
-
I think maybe Revell or Tower Hobbies got things mixed up, don't remember them putting the snowmobile in the Jeep kit, although it could be a ploy to drive sales of a kit (Jeep Honcho) that might not be a big seller otherwise. I have been known to fall for Revell's marketing scams, how else do you explain buying 10 of those GMC pickups with the snowplow????????
-
The trouble with that snowmobile is that it represents something from the mid 70's and is nothing like a modern machine. Would be nice to see again but if I were to get one it would be weathered and left in a diorama somewhere.

Another one bites the dust uh
mikemodeler replied to horsepower's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Some good points there Rusty but don't forget one thing- Amazon needs people to pick and pack their orders. While a local business is good to have, a large corporation with many employees making a decent wage is even better. The trouble plaguing many LHS (at least in my experience) is that when it comes time to sell the business, the only option is to go out of business. There aren't that many people waiting to step up and enter the hobby shop biz because of low margins, long hours and competitive pressure. I see the same thing in the auto parts biz, margins have been compressed because of corporate big box stores, internet retailers and the need to be open later and on weekends because that is what the competition is doing. And much like the hobby biz, we go to that local place when we need advice on our cars but head to the corporate retailer for the perceived bargain! Many retailers have been able to flourish while others have been left behind. How can Target stay relevant and thrive while Sears struggles? Did one change with the times while the other wasted money trying to attract customers that had already left and vowed to never come back? -

MCM T-Shirts Are Back!
mikemodeler replied to Gregg's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Nice shirt, but that model bench is even nicer! Way too organized and neat for me, I would probably get some of my WIPS finished if I spent the time to organize my workbench! -
Yeah Bill, I started getting a more realistic view of model buying when I was out of work in December 2015, but I found myself buying kits at Ollie's and the clearance section at Hobby Lobby thinking it wasn't as bad because I was buying them "cheaper". The reality is that with all of the WIPs and selected models that I am holding on to, I still have too many!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am going to go through some of my OOP kits and ask myself the hard question of "Are you really going to build that?" and probably get rid of the ones that I won't be building.

This is so true, all one has to do is watch one of the business channels on TV or read a newspaper to see/hear about the latest old line retailer closing or cutting back on the number of stores. My kids probably can't tell you the last time they went to the mall but probably know their Amazon Prime membership number better than their social security number! We aren't hearing about the post office having financial problems since they started delivering for Amazon and while I haven't become an Amazon member or user, I do a fair amount of online shopping mostly due to being able to find what I want. I will buy models locally if I can, but do find myself at Modelroundup or Tower Hobbies more often than at a local store. -
Thanks for sharing Tim, I have always wanted to go to this show and it is on my bucket list. Seeing all of those 60's and 70's pickup trucks makes me wonder if or when someone will bring us some more building options? The news from Moebius is encouraging, but it would be really nice if we had an all new 67-72 tool of the GM and Dodge pickups, much like we have with the Fords of the same era. It would be a great day in the model world if we had 2 & 4 WD, short bed/long bed kits to build of GM and Dodge vehicles!

Sorry to hear the news about a hobby shop closing but I am afraid the trend will continue. The costs to keep a store open have got to be getting out of hand for small operators, especially when a big chain like Michaels or Hobby Lobby can get better terms and discounts and therefore be more competitively priced. I agree that the personal service is what makes a LHS the place to go but here in the Charlotte area I have seen them dry up to the point where we only have one left and they seem to be barely hanging on. -
These pictures were from 2 months ago, any chance you have completed it Steve? Would love to see this one in finished form! Also hoping someone sees fit to create a lift kit and/or 3/4 or 1 ton conversion to make a heavy duty version of this great kit!

Just an update, I have found a buyer ( not the local guy) who offered me a very reasonable price for the whole lot. While I could have waited 6 weeks until the next model show around here and MAYBE made as much, I am accomplishing a much needed task more easily and cleanly. Going forward, I will be really thinking through any model kit purchase as I realized buying up that many kits only to never even opening most of them was foolish and costly. I will only buy what I will truly build and not have kits for the sake of having kits.

Revell 1983 Hurst Oldsmobile -- Finished 8/15/17

Looking very nice, that paint and decals are perfect, wish I could perfect the application of those tricky decals. -
no longer Revell street burner 70 chevelle 3n1
mikemodeler replied to Iroc crazy's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
If you are doing a full on detailed build, then search out the kit you want. If you are doing a curbside or are not concerned about the drivetrain, then the Revell snap fast 70 Chevelle kit builds up real nice and easy. -
I get what you are saying but like the 1:1 world, many view model building as an expression of art. Now, it will be argued what constitutes art and whose definition you use, but what is ugly to one is beauty to another. Some vehicles lend themselves to being customized better than others, but as I learned early on in life...To each his own. A good example for me would be lowriders. I don't think much of them as useful means of transportation but I do admire the work (usually the paint) that goes into them. While I might drool over a properly restored 1969 Camaro, the next guy will say it should be cut up and given the pro touring look with cartoon wheels and modern amenities. Whatever your taste, know that you are probably not alone and hopefully there is enough other like minded people out there to share your view.

Really nice job on that Chuck, love the details. Man, just when I think you are back on the rust and weathering kick, you slip in one of these shiny trucks! -

I like how you are "updating" this kit with some modern parts. Really like the interior upgrade to include the dash. -
I have thrown away more NASCAR kits than I was able to sell! Back in 2001 I remember Dale Sr. kits selling out after his death and people putting them on eBay trying to make a quick buck in the aftermath of his death. I have been a fan of NASCAR for 40 years but have yet to assemble one kit, don't know what it is about building a NASCAR that doesn't appeal to me.
-
I think that is the same guy, because his ad clearly states "NO NASCAR" ! I understand that my list is not full of old sealed kits from the 70's, because if it was they would be on eBay ! I do have some old kits but they are holy grails and I am not planning on selling them yet. I may have found a buyer who is offering a very reasonable price, I will have to pay shipping but it will give the same result- cash and a clean transaction.
-
That could be one reason Dave, but I would think it has more to do with having their shelves set up and making changes several times a year. Not sure how many stores they are up to but I would think coordinating the re-set and making sure enough models are ordered and in stock at their warehouses for replenishment means a fairly large order for Revell to fill. I would be surprised to NOT see the Suburban kit at Hobby Lobby, I figure they will be a couple of months behind.

A fifth wheel flat bed for 1 ton trucks is one idea, a simple utility bed similar to the one The Modelhaus offered would be nice too. Resin tool boxes for the flat bed or pickup beds would be welcomed. Maybe a roll back kit? Take your time, gotta get a job and save some money first!

I did receive two offers so far, both below what I feel I can accept at this point. One was from a forum member here and the other from a local buyer. The local buyer's offer was much higher and would not involve having to ship them. I might revisit the local buyers offer in a couple of days, money talks! I do appreciate the feedback from everyone.
